1/8 looks the best for me. Could be used in many situations. ½ and ¼ are more "dreamy" and suitable for romantic portraits or so.

I am glad i went with the 1/8 strength filter, the 1/4 and 1/2 are very strong and you can't get a sense of that until you actually try it for yourself. Luckily i was able to rent all of them before buying, which is what i would recommend everyone to do, if possible of course. Nice video, thanks for sharing!

i love black mist filters. they're perfect for taking that clinical sharpness off of digital images. i'm glad to see 7artisans presenting an offering, but I would've liked to see a lower price point. I've tried both the Tiffen and the K&F variants, both come in at around $40-50 for the 52mm size, and they've been comparable in performance.

@@CHTFilms i've used several of k&f's products over the years and the quality has been excellent. i bought their black mist filter specifically to compare it with the tiffen filter and the performance is indistinguishable from the tiffen.

@@CHTFilms i can't speak much to strength equivalence. i can say that the 1/4 k&f definitely doesn't have as strong of an effect as the 1/2 tiffen. i don't have two filters from different brands with the same strength, so i can't say that how different the effect would be given the same rating. however, i'd imagine that since there's a noticeable difference between them when one brand is rated at 1/4 and the other is rated at 1/4, i would imagine that same difference would exist between 1/8 and 1/4. as far as the "right" strength from any particular brand, i think that's going to be dependent on personal taste, the scene, and the aperture more than the camera.

K&F will show up stronger than the tiffen equivalent strength. Also, k&f has a bluish halation when someone wears white fabric. Haida seems to be the better cheaper alternative. But Tiffen remains the gold standard

I purchased the 1/2, should be interesting though. Nice review and I too thought the 1/4 looked more in strength than the 1/2, which is good because it could counter the strength of the 1/2, or not.

Nice comparison - thanks for sharing. I see they do a 49mm for the X100 with added bonus of completing the weather sealing at the same time. Daytime it looks like the filters remove some of the digital look of the shots. Reckon the neons of the Southend arcades would look good too.

I also think different manufactures will give different results, with some different 1/4ths having a bit of a nicer feather style roll off for light sources. I do love the 1/8th, it's just enough of that effect to add a subtle light bloom effect and is more practical than experimental (which the experimental style can be an interesting look if you have a good lighting setup, but is more of a case by case basis on when you'd use the stronger strengths). I feel like Kolari Vision handles the stronger strength versions better, but they commonly are too strong for being apart of a main setup full time, while the 1/8ths are good for an entire shoot.
