Whelp, I guess no more showers for me... The only 'mold remover' they are selling us over here is bleach-based crap. I do have Hydrogen Peroxide though, but it's 12% (used for RetroBright purposes to whiten yellowed plastics via UV light). I guess I need to dillute that with a lot more water then? But what about the moisture issue when using water? Wouldn't that raise the humidity levels even further and create the same environment for the mold to grow again? What about 99.9% Isopropyl Alcohol? Does that also kill mold and its spores when sprayed onto the affected areas? I also have bottles of that.

Note I used to have a restoration business and was trained and bonded for mold removal. Also I am a chemist who graduated in 1982 from Virginia Tech. Mixing vinegar & Baking soda neutralizes the acid of the vinegar (Acetic Acid becomes Sodium Acetate, Sodium Bicarbonate becomes CO2 gas -- yes the complete reaction is a bit more complex). It is the acidity that kills the mold, so mixing them would be silly. Mold is killed by acids and strong bases, Also oxidizers kill mold. BLEACH, like hydrogen peroxide is an oxidizer (basic perchlorate ions for the win) and will kill mold organisms and destroy spores -- as do most oxidizers. However bleach does not soak into porous materials such as drywall well, it mainly kills the surface mold, leaving the imbedded mold, which is why it is no longer recommended for restoration work. Bleach is excellent for tiled areas though. Also, the acids (of which vinegar/acetic acid is the safest) are generally much more effective. Mixing distilled vinegar (acetic acid 5% acidity) and hydrogen peroxide is much more effective, but is damaging to skin and eyes. If you use the mix, make it up fresh and use immediately. Borax, is a basic oxidizer, but generally works best in hot water, whereas vinegar works fine in cold water.

@@user-dr6rt1ji3l Sorry, just saw this video again on my suggested video feed and so rewatched it. I would use lots of vinegar as I removed the old grout and tiles (assuming they need replaced)... place any removed grout in it. Keep lots of ventilation and HEPA mask (I used a full face mask with HEPA and organic vapor cartridges in poorly ventilated areas - but as a chemist I am used to these).

Take it from me. As a runner, my shoes often get soaked in rain water and tend to get a little moldy. Last time this happened I got the bright idea 💡to soak the shoes overnight in a bucket of water mixed with distilled white vinegar and baking soda. When I mixed everything, the solution would always fizz up. And after repeating the soaking process 3 different times overnight, the shoes still smelled moldy. And I didn't feel like the vinegar and baking soda soaks did anything at all. Which was pretty frustrating! Then it became very obvious to soak the shoes in vinegar separately from baking soda. So one day I soaked them in vinegar (to kill the mold). Then the next day I'd soak them in baking soda to remove all odors. Guess what? That worked perfectly and the shoes smelled normal again! So always clean with vinegar and baking soda in separate cleaning cycles. Don't mix them together bc it won't work with mold.

@@fatima-zahrakajji4821 I just submerged the shoes in a big bucket. The first time I filled up the bucket with white vinegar & water (50/50 mix). After ~12 hours of soaking, I dumped out the vinegar & water. Hosed down my shoes to rinse them (to get the vinegar out of them). Rinsed out the bucket too. Then I filled up the bucket again with water (enough to cover the shoes). And I added in about 2-3 cups of baking soda. Then I let that soak for 12-24 hours. Then I rinsed everything with a hose again. And tada! the shoes smelled fresh and clean. The shoes will prob float up when you soak them... so I just used a water jug to push the shoes back under water to soak.

Near the end, you will be spitting up unimaginable amounts of clear mucus, like a baby...like cups of it. As it progresses, you will be tired constantly, motivation to live or participate in anything will go, and you end up in bed. what expert? Do they even exist? I had 7 contractors to my home and told them I wanted to finish my basement even though it is already finished. The problem is it smells like mildew as does my house. The majority of them was to basically cover it up. Only one out of seven said we need to take the whole basement down to stud and find the source of the odor. BUT even he thought it would be a few windows and door seals. I tore the basement to studs myself and realized it has nothing to do with door and window seals and is actually traveling down from the 2nd story behind the siding. Me myself figured out the issue. Not some so called basement expert. And yes, 3 out of the 7 had over 20 years experience dealing with wet basements and mold issues.

@@YouhavetoBelieve3347 the drywall or wood or whatever the mold is growing on needs to be physically cut out and discarded and replace that area with clean,, new, dry, uncontaminated drywall or wood etc. Literally Removed and completely gone. Same with couches etc , there's no way to get rid of mold on couches and soft chairs, stuffed animals etc because it's also on the inside and in the fabric. Toss those. But wear high quality gear because when removing it, cutting it out, disturbing it causes mold spores ( mold eggs) to fly all over in the air, that you inhale and can land somewhere else and start to grow when conditions are right, humid, leaks etc. You don't want to spread it around or inhale it. Mold is a living organism and like anything else, has a defense system. The spores do not hurt you. The mycotoxins that it produces through its metabolism, and the microbial volatile organic compounds(MVOC’s) from its metabolism can be harmful to people. When you “kill” mold with a biocide, it’s communicating information through its mycelial network, and kicking its metabolism into overdrive. It’s going to excrete mycotoxins and other secondary metabolites that will attach onto the spores. It will sporilate to distribute those as a defense mechanism, and try and germinate elsewhere. When you kill mold. You make the spores count between 1.5-10x higher in that moment. Proper remediation is calling someone that’s licensed and understands it so you don’t contaminate the rest of the house. You’re advising people to do something that will ultimate contaminate their home due to lack of knowledge, containment, and proper cleaning supplies for microbial and fungal growth. The color of the growth determines nothing more than the food source(substrate) that it’s on. Black does not necessarily suggest Chatomieum, or Stachybotry Chartarum. Even more common ones you’ll see in ubiquitous amounts in a home like aspergillus can lead to aspergillosis in cases of extreme exposure. They can even inhabit the aviolas of the lungs. There’s even cases of asp/pen growth being surgically scraped from the brain. Like any other substance knowledge matters, and dosage matters. Do your research. Understand the biology of mold, and the difference between mold and mildew. Understand that there’s professionals in this profession to prevent people from doing things like tearing out contaminated materials and cross contaminating their living space.

Do you believe that using some of these methods to spray onto mold-contaminated items, such as the outside of a bottle of vitamins, would be helpful to avoid cross contamination when moving into a new house after black mold exposure? Thank you so very much for your response!! 😊

I bought a house that had moldy drywall all throughout because of a water heater burst, the house was a flip house and was beautiful but no one wanted it because the mold looked scary, i got it for half what i sold it for. First i removed all drywall, then i painstakingly wiped down every stud in the house with bleach water, then used a microbial bomb kit to fog the house, cost 400.00 also ran the a/c fans during the fogging to get the vents. I re drywalled the house and painted and finished it. I had an air test done when i finished the house and it was perfect. It was alot of labor but i saved at least 10, 000 by doing it my self.

A common misconception is to mix vinegar and baking soda together. They cancel each other out! The only real thing they are good for together is when you have a clogged drain. Filling the drain with baking soda and then adding the vinegar on top will create a bubbling effect that can help loosen up whatever's blocking the drain below. It doesn't always work 100% though... you will most likely have to do it a couple times AND use some elbow grease with a long, poky object as well. ...But yeah, vinegar and baking soda CANCEL each other out!
@frankwong294

I also add some dawn dish detergent to the baking soda before the vinegar. It acts as a grease cutter if there is anything down there that is fatty. Also let it sit for 10 min and then rinse with hot water (be careful with boiling water, it could loosen the glue in the pipes and cause a different issue)

My property manager sd they just removed mould from my wall after cleaning my air conditioner. We were home and weren't told they'd be using a talc-y, powdery mould killer, or they removed it, vacuumed. I think there might have been a language miscommunication. They said they didn't smell it but there was a hazy, fog all over my apt and it was choking me out. idk what they used or did. I'm not sure if they thought I was implying the air conditioner they cleaned. But I had already pointed out the black mould in the wall where the air conditioner goes. My caretaker looked at me as if I was being ungrateful of the work being done. When they left there was a chalky dust covering everything and I had just spent all evening dusting, washing, I had to wash the bed sheets twice today because of it. I still smell this dusty, chalk in the air. I've had all the windows open and all exhaust fans going. I don't think they knew what they were doing.

From what I have read, there is no mold named black mold. Every spore has a specific name and ranking. If you call it a mold that looks black, that would be correct. Now you're the professional. Is this correct? I am a handyman by trade. And I get so tired of people flipping out when a couch is too close to an outside home wall. They move the sofa, and a surface layer of mold that looks black is on the wall and even the couch. News hype has freaked out so many people. Call in mold remediation, and they rip out the sheetrock. I have seen it and looked at the sheetrock in close inspection and inside the wall. No mold was on the wall or on the back of the sheetrock. break the sheetrock, and the mold is only on the paint. To me, that is disgusting ethics. Using people's fear of mold to rip them off blindly. What do you think about what I have seen? Like I said, I am a professional Handyman who does things by code and don't screw customers over to get paid well.

Saying "mold needs 3 things: water, humidity, and food" sounds ridiculous. Water and humidity is the same damn thing. Bleach DOES kill mold, but only on non-porous surfaces (like tile). Many products specifically for killing mold come as concentrates that you add water and bleach to. Vinegar kills mold on porous surfaces (like wood). Do not mix vinegar with baking soda. The chemical reaction neutralizes them both and you end up with water. Water is what got us into this moldy mess to begin with. Instead, use them seperately.

Yeah, like nice when ya can reach it but it also can be pure hell when ya can't get near it. Dig, i had a super freaking colony of that deadly black mold crap in the worst place you can possibly imagine? Deep inside a double layered with wood and rockwall wall via my 175 year old house. Had no way to reach it without tearing this old thick walls apart. So i drilled a few small holes and inserted a small fiber optic camera to get a better look at the life threatening menace, and it was quite ghastly indeed. Next i iserted a tiny 1/4 vinyl hose and sprayed the best mold killer I could find. Thus, using a tiny spray nozzle it vaporized this solution killing a a large portion of that mold on contact but, not all. Was working basically in the dark here folks and that also failed big time too. I had no way to reach it nor scrub it down. So my next big step what's to use some high energy ion particles to attack it with. Build a 30kv device and inserted the emitters into those same holes and hit it with what I thought would be an overdose of ion radiation. Cool right? We'll no, that also turned out to be a waste of time and money. Then i remembered what we did to take care of little a mold problem in the fridge last winter. We tried that baking soda trick and it failed. So i cutup an onion or two put one in the freezer and one in the fridge. Sure it may sound crazy but I gave that a try in that mold filled room and this time something changed for the better. No one said jack about this no i learned it's not the mold itself that gets ya, it's those spores that do ya great harm. Thus, one thing about onions is that vapor which makes them eyes water also kills off those mold released spores on contact too! Everyone have a great day!!!!

Paul West Is this for real??? I have mold spores in my house and my eyes are burning like fire yet when I’m not home they are fine! I had a water leak behind my washer and I did not know it until finally the water became so much that it flooded into the hall and when I looked behind the washer there was black mold everywhere. We vacuumed up the water with the water vac sprayed bleach on the mold and cleaned it but now I know it’s in the air because I was not like this before that happened. So do you really think if I go by onions at the store it’ll kill the mold spores in my house?? I have a house that’s 2000 ft.² how many onions what I need? And where do you put the onions up high or on the floor?

Mold also releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The spores are generally an issue if you have a compromised immune system... Mold from decaying leaves include black mold, where I live they are the main unavoidable source of the spores. But it is the continuous exposure to high levels of VOCs which cause most of the health issues as people develop allergic reactions to them... from mild but continuous to severe and deadly.

Bleach does kill mold. What's bad about using bleach is breathing it, even after dried, when used indoors if the treated areas are not cleaned of the bleach residue after disinfection. Bleach does not permeate, so it must be used on nonporous surfaces. The dirty little secret is you effusing FUD. Leaving spores behind in porous surfaces, even if they dry, means mold will grow again when moisture becomes available for the spores to grow into the mold.

Lol, another lie-vid. This guy's job is to earn money from removing your mold, so he's not gonna let you EVER do it yourself. obviously there's a difference from outdoor and indoors to be able to properly Bleach DOES kill black mold. I speak from genuine experience, but as another reply indicates, it's generally for tiles and stone walls outside. They're porous so it does not go in so deep. BUT if you get thick bleach, just buy a good quantity of it, just pour it pure on top of the severe bleach areas. I bought a Spanish Villa where there has not been paid any attention for more than 10 years, there was black mold on natural limestone everywhere, as on many, many tiles. Pressure washing did achieve a lot, but there was stubborn black mold that just wouldn't budge. After having run the pressure washer once on the entire (stone/tiled) terrain, i let it dry, and then poured a bunch of cans of bleach on the terrain where there was still a lot of black, thick, mold. don't talk to me about how its 'bad' for the environment because A) the black mold itself is bad for your health and as such the environment period. B) the bleach will get diluted by the water, find it's way though the ground and get diluted more C) the amount of bleach or just as toxic equivalents people use in their daily cleaning agents are even worse. just let it do it's job for a hour or perhaps a bit, and you will see that more than half to about 3/4 of the mold has turned orange/brownish. it's doing it's job. you can pour another bunch of bleach on it, or, and this to me is the better solution, go with some of the steps mentioned above: white (cleaning grade) vinagre. again, buy in bulk, and buy it as pure as possible, don't distill. after that, rinse it off, and then get some chlorine - you can usually get it from stores that sell anything pool related. Mix it with water 50/50, then spray it in (either with a foam blaster you can put on your water hose or pressure washer, or from a spray bottle / pressure sprayer ) richly, and leave it in for an hour or two. then, pressure wash once again, and you should be completely free from the black mold. to then PREVENT it from coming back, i found the best treatment is then to get a big can of anti-algue liquid meant to put in your pool too, to mix likewise in the foam spraying cup / soap mixer for your pressure washer, which nicely puts a foam layer. just spray your tiles or stones, and let it dry. the BEST time to do all of this is when it's heavily clouded (but not raining) so the sun doesn't destroy the chlorine or chemicals, or just about dusk before dark sets in. obviously, for doing this indoors is a totally different story. humidity is indeed the principle problem, so first get rid of that, you can do that by buying or hiring an industrial heater, which you let run in the problematic room, to dry out the room, walls, ceiling. then, you treat the mold with industrial-grade cleaning agents. WEAR A PROFESSIONAL MASK. now, the problem is the humidity source. it can be a bad roof tiling, repair that. it can be a leaking water pipe (or drain), that's a bit more of a problem but you will need to fix it so will need a professional. another possibility is isolation problems, or perhaps a crack in the wall from the outside, so you'd need to make sure your facade or exterior walls are not allowing water to enter. if needed, there is transparent paint you brush over your existing paint with water repellent characteristics, preventing moisture to enter. obviously the mold needs to be gone. but you don't need to replace a wall after it has had mold though, which the op is almost suggesting. if the walls have been dried, then the mold has been killed, and then cleaned (preferably with steam equipment that has a vacuum function), your room should be fine. all that remains is then to treat it once with anti-mold, and then to put down a new layer of paint. preferably one that breathes - the paint in many cases is the cause of mold as the wrong choice of paint can lead to the wall becoming unable to properly 'breathe' which leaves moisture to accumilate in the walls untill it gets through the paint and then you will discover your mold/moisture problem.

I had a refrigerated air conditioner in my tiny office at work which accumulated black mold. I had what seemed like a cold that wouldn't go away, cough all day at work, better at home. After the Dr asked several questions she said it was the A/C. After inspection she was right. Said"you may not realize it , but it is slowly killing you". We checked several other enclosed offices several of them had mold in them. Others weren't affected as the offices were bigger and people were in & out where I was in there 8/10 hours a day. 15 years later my lungs are not good. Yeah pretty disappointed a professional is telling people to mix an acid with a base that cancels each other out as the first solution. Do them separately folks. The foaming is just a chemical reaction that creates salt water as it releases carbon dioxide (like your breath). Yes many professional cleaners still recommend this for allllll kinds of things. This is very basic chemistry. They are only good cleaners because of their specific pH.. Use them separately to get the benefits of a low pH with the vinegar and then the high pH of the soda. Otherwise you’re just neutralizing them both or weakening the effectiveness your vinegar at that point. I know the bubbles are satisfying but yeah

I realize this video was made years ago, but I'm surprised you didn't say that people need to leave the sprayed on products on the surfaces for several minutes to kill the mold. Vinegar without baking soda would kill some mold. Baking soda mixed with vinegar is only useful as a paste: it would have to be scrubbed on, which would spread any surviving spores. Adding baking soda to the vinegar in a spray bottle will clog the bottle. Hydrogen peroxide doesn't needs to be mixed with water, and actually shouldn't be diluted. The stronger it is, the more effective it is but only if used correctly: on a clean surface and left to sit for at least 8 minutes. This is information directly from experiments posted in scholarly articles.

@@johnsn10 I understand your confusion, but bleach does not feed mold. Bleach may appear to feed mold for a couple of reasons. First, if used on a porous surface the chlorine will not penatrate the surface to kill the roots, but the water content will penatrate the surface basicly watering the roots. Second, bleach breaks down relatively quickly, so an older bottle of bleach, lacking the higher chlorine content, will in essence again simply water the roots. But a new bottle of bleach used on a non porous surface will kill mold.
