I got mine at the dump. Went to take my trash off one day and this little puppy came out shaking and hungry. Someone had just abandoned him 💔Brought him home and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. He’s so smart and sweet. I love my Duke 💜

I found my BMC at a petco when we went to find a beagle that we thought would be there. He was such a cute puppy and it was love at first sight. He is two years old and the BIGGEST baby ever. If you're having trouble training your puppy, please don't give up! My dog caused so much trouble but he got a lot better. he can still be a stinker though, but he is my faithful and trusting dog and I would do it a million times over if I had to.

I, too, got my Black Mouth Cur from the shelter. I first mistook him for a Rhodesian Ridgeback Mix until I came across the BMC. I'm laughing bc my comment is basically... the same as william smith's. Manny is my best friend. I take him everywhere: hiking, camping, long horseback rides, into the city for lunch or dinner, concerts, parties. I have several psychiatric illnesses, including a panic disorder, and I swear he knows when an attack is coming. He sits on me and licks my skin and lets me hug him tight. He's fiercely loyal, stunningly athletic, gorgeous, the perfect size at ~58 lbs. Strangers often remark on his "eyeliner." His eyes are the same red-brown as his coat, which is short and more coarse than soft, though very glossy with good diet and care. He's trainable if you know what you're doing (always, always positive reinforcement, good treats, and breaks to play). I take him with me to the barn and he minds himself around livestock. He's incredibly sensitive; I don't even have to raise my voice to scold him, just pitch it to Mean Momma and he's instantly begging for forgiveness. He sleeps curled up with me in bed, no matter where we are, and I can trust him off-leash. He has killed squirrels, snakes, and gophers without any instruction on my part (I'm not a hunter), but if he goes after something I can call him back and he'll mind. He's so good at reading my body language I sometimes feel as though he's reading my mind; if I don't like someone, he doesn't like them, and is very aloof to them specifically. He's an amazing family dog. A toddler waddled up to him in public while my back was turned, grabbed his ears, and booped her face on his, and he just gave her the tiniest, most gentle lick. I took him on a protest march and he was perfect. He LOVES other dogs, but gets nervous around intact males that are larger than he is. His look is noble, even if he's a goofy baby. He rarely barks and even less often growls, but when he does it makes you stop. The first time we heard him bark (weeks after we got him), my mother and I turned to each other and said, "wow." He's very, very, very protective, though. Non-family members can't walk into the house if he's home alone outside his crate. He has never bitten anyone, but my neighbor claims he snapped at her when I was gone (she likely cornered him). When he's in the car, if a stranger approaches and tries to pet him through the open window or touch the vehicle he'll go into his Alert and Ready position. I trust him to take care of me, and he trusts me to take care of him. If someone were to ever try to harm me when he's with me, I'm certain he'd stand up for me and ward them off with his deep, powerful bark and menacing growl. I can't say enough good things about this dog. He's the first animal I've ever had that's bonded with me like this - and I've had many. I don't think I'll ever go long without a Black Mouth Cur in my life.

Can I just ask in reference to your panic disorder; have you had B12 and Folate checked? I had a panic disorder since I was a young child and at age 29 found out I have a B12 deficiency. Mine is caused by an autoimmune disease but B12 deficiencies are almost always masked by high Folate because it is added to so many foods. The higher your Folate and even if your B12 is in range but on the lower end... that's a severe deficiency. Just thought I'd mention it seeing as it was missed for myself for over 20 years and by so so many doctors

Great story. I just rescued a 3 y.o. BMC 2 days ago from an animal shelter. He was misplaced in the Tennessee floods a couple years ago and was homeless for a bit. 3rd day now with him and he is so gentle, kind, obedient, and just overall the coolest dog I've ever had. Floyd and I were sprayed by a skunk on our first night in my back yard. We both stink a little bit the past 2 days, but I was impressed how be leaped at the skunk like a lion. He walks like a lion and jumps like a deer. The most amazing breed I never knew about until 2 days ago. They are now one of my favorite breeds. Will post videos on my channel as we adventure together. The skunk incident already made it on there..🤣

If you're thinking about one as a pet get it. I had one and he was amazing. He was not a working dog but a family pet. He was very friendly, loyal, and smart. They have alot of energy but are easily trained. My 8 year old daughter taught him to sit in a week, stay and come in 2, and he had almost mastered rolling over when he unfortunately got hit by a car and passted away. My 8 yo taught him all that. He was and amazing dog who at the end of our 1 year of us having him learned how to sit, lay down, sit up, stay, come, shake, was potty trained, rang a bell when he had to go potty, jump (when told) and alot of that was taught partially if not all by my 8 year old. Unlike other curs such as the Mountain Cur they are not food aggressive. Ours cuddled up with my daughter and our cat every night he was the sweetest dog ever and made me appreciate dogs on a whole new level.

I got my black-mouth cur about 7 months ago. She's an amazing dog. So loving and loyal it's unbelievable. Best dog you could ask for. They are a bit stubborn, but their stubborness comes from their intelligence. They think they know better than you do. You just gotta be patient while training them.

I got mine from a local shelter in the north, but the dog was originally from Tennessee. He was basically untrained and had clearly been abused. He was afraid of everything, especially the television. He once saw a hot air balloon launch from behind some trees and yanked the leash out of my hand and ran about half a mile home. Impressive since we'd only had him around 4 months and hadn't walked in this area very often. He's made remarkable progress, learning to be an indoor animal from our cats. You can usually find him sleeping on the back of the couch in the window. This dog is amazingly energetic, and once he learned to trust me, has become a very persistent playmate, sometimes to a fault. This breed can go nonstop, and we thankfully have a lot of natural preserved areas to let him enjoy. He would certainly kill every small animal he sees if I didn't stop him. Having been stray for some time, I have no doubt that he fed himself well. Northerners, if you get one of these dogs brought up from shelters in the south, you need to expect lots of issues with parasites including heartworm. My boy required treatment for intestinal parasites for about 6 months, and he has heartworm. We chose to give him preventative and ride out the worms' lifecycle because the treatment would have required fairly strong sedatives and confinement for the duration of treatment (about 9 months but could take longer), and we couldn't do that to him. He gets checked regularly, and so far there is no evidence of new worms, so we're just letting him live a pampered life. These are great, loyal, super protective dogs. They are absolutely not for novice dog owners. This video is right...you have to know what you're doing with this breed! But they're amazing animals.

I got my BMC from the local shelter and he is my best buddy and I take him everywhere. I know they are working dogs but he enjoys being the family pet. On our nightly walk he can smell a cat that is in the area from very long distances and wont retire for the evening without making sure the backyard is "safe". My BMC is affectionate, loyal, smart and very protective. I'm not sure how he ever wound up in an animal shelter but he is a great dog and I consider myself lucky to have rescued him.

I'm no expert on BMC dogs, I just know how awesome mine is. He was about a year and a half old when I got him and I'm not sure how he would up at a dog shelter. $200-300 sounds about right for a BMC from a reputable breeder. I hope you get one, they are great dogs.

Nice video....pretty spot on with my BMC with a few exceptions (of course every dog is unique). I never have to muzzle her while walking. She's incredibly friendly to strangers and other dogs when on walks or away from the house. On the other hand once they step foot on the property or come into the house she goes into full alert mode. This is pretty much the only time shes vocal or barks. Shes super smart and stubborn but learned very quickly. And the part about harsh punishment/correction is very accurate....shes such a sensitive soul.

Kellonrs william smith hi there! my family just adopted a dog from a nearby petshop, they said that he was a breed of pug and french bulldog idk how he could come up with that, but after several "research" we found out that our dog is a BMC. it's been a long time since we have a dog in our house, the last time we had a dog was 10 years ago and it was a Labrador. our BMC, we name him Rocky, has been showing a very loving nature but we've seen in the internet that BMC is also a hunting dog and tends to be sensitive, so is there anything we need to be aware of in training him? like, does BMC develop aggressive traits, or how are they towards children bc we have kids around the house? thanks!

I live near the Ocala National Forrest. A few years ago a strange dog showed up at my house... Obviously underfed, and friendly, we allowed him to adopt us. After an adjustment period, he is now a vital part of our family... He is the spitting image of the dog pictured at 2:26 of this video, and he definitely show all the personality traits described of the black mouth cur variety... (and my wife now loves him more than me)

I had a black mouth cur hound mix that reacentlu passed away from kidney failure. He was an amazing dog he was so calm and gentle he was 95 pounds and thought he was a lap dog. He was never aggressive towards anyone or any other animals. Be was very good with children my 2 year old cousin even attempted to ride him. The vet said his kidney failure was a long term condition that is very hard to detect and that it was most likely a tumor. We only had him for six months. He came from a rescue that rescued him on the day he was supposed to be put down. The rescue themat we got him from got in a wreck down the road from our house and he escaped the van. He shows up to out house and we didn't know where he came from we decided to keep of if nobody claimed him bc he was amazing. We found out a few days later that his owners were found and then found out that they were a rescue and he was up for adoption we immediately decided to adopt him. He was the best dog I've ever had and I'm heart broken he was extremely close to me even though we didn't have him long we had a bond like no other. Our family is now looking to adopt anouther dog and hopefully a black mouth cur because we love their tempermate and attitude they are an amazing breed

You have to be careful. They have a strong prey instinct. However, we have successfully integrated ours with the cat. They seem to get along reasonably well.....though not so much with neighbors cats. They are fair game to be chased (along with ANY other critter that will give them a good run).

Hank Cuntpunt lol sounds like my females. They’re crazy aggressive bitches with each other but want me to love them and rub their bellies then they go kill anything that moves and sometimes each other. I raised them as puppies together and they still are hyper aggressive over anything they consider a treat or toy. It can be a stick they find in the pasture and they’ll fight at the drop of a hat over it. Great dogs though but their prey drive is on overdrive so they can’t interact with any other animals without trying to kill it.

These dogs are smart as shit. I'm not sure where the "basic trick in inability" comes from. Like all hunting dogs, they take direction very well. You'd never breed a herding or hunting dog that didn't listen. They have a natural hunting ability that is almost without par, but that hardly makes them ungovernable. My BMC is the best dog I've ever owned, and damn near as smart as my German & Belgian Shepherds

My BMC we are 100%certain was a hog dog. He is STUBBORN. We found him , tried scanning, searched for owners Nada. we fell in love. That was 18 months ago. Since then he ruined a mattress by urinating in the middle, gone after stray cats and family cats in backyard, and ate three kennels and most of the inside of our garage. Thankfully, he fell into roses with our son. So now we have a steel kennel, and he enjoys long walks with his boy through the woods. 😀

I have seen these dogs here in south Texas mainly hog hunting. Very smart and considered a sight dog... meaning he won't bark until he sees the hog. Good for quickly subduing the Hog unlike some other breeds that will bark the whole time and alert the hog and make the hunt go on for ever. They get along with other breeds very well e.g. American Pitt Bull used for catch dogs sometimes on the same hog hunt side by side with Black Mouth. Highly recommended for hunting or the farm or ranch and livestock. Awesome dogs and one of the best in the nation. This video does not do it justice. Ask an owner and you will be looking to find one for yourself.

I was told my dog was a "west virginia cur". She was a free baby pup and I believe she is half siberian husky and half cur. She has functioned as an outdoor dog on our 2 acre MI wooded property, usually refusing to come in at night despite a second dog usually coming in at night. I have pleaded with her to come in below 10F. She definitely knows how to bed down in a good spot, though she sometimes likes her dog house since I put it where she can look into the house from the porch. She has no fear of guns and loud noises, despite little experience. She has never growled at or threatened any person, even strangers by themselves, like the UPS drivers. She barks rarely, gets rid of vermin even skunks & raccoon, and has never ever harmed a chicken or a pet rabbit despite another dog's bad habit. She pulled a raccoon 7 feet OUT OF A TREE and killed it because it was threatening at me. Where do they teach dogs to climb trees to do that! That thing weighed about 25 lbs. She takes care of mice and squirrels. She feels like she has a job to patrol her property, which we define with an electric collar. She has a habit unfortunately of rolling in excrement but I believe this is how she identifies pet or home animals versus prey. It is why she leaves chickens alone and chases crows. She leaves the "regular deer" alone but chases the newcomers. She left a ground hog alone until my husband squirted it with a hose, then in two days it was gone. She loves affection and sitting inside in the evening by my feet but gets anxious in the house in a few hours. She is housetrained, but I think she does not have a lot of time on her bladder. She also tends to smell if I have not washed her. You have to wash your hands after you pet her. Her fur is husky thick and needs to be raked out twice a year but otherwise stays glossy on her own. I think those who know what they have in this dog should maintain the cur breed. I did not know her value when I neutered her. I did not know they made dogs that were useful helpers and sensible without training. She is pretty amazing!

i was watching this because we have a domestic one and i wanted to know where some of her characteristics came from. turns out that at 4:45 that actually is our dog! her name is texie and shes been with us for nearing ten years. in that photo shes lying down on our old houses kitchen floor. she is getting a bit old now and is bigger and less active than she was at the time of that photo, but shes still the great family dog she always was. in our experience she is very friendly but can be loud when someone enters the home. once they are in and shes comfortable with them shes very loving though. she can also get very jealous and loves attention. she can be hard to handle on walks but she is very sociable and is not aggressive to other dogs unless provoked. if you want a calm dog with a lot of bark but no bite this breed is a good choice.

We got "Piglet" from the shelter a little over a year ago, I was deadset against her but my wife begged and pleaded with me for an hour til i gave in. Here is my takeaway after a year : 1. The energy level is INSANE (I have a Malinois that is "tame" by comparison ) When piglet runs its 110% insanity and happiness...you can feel the vibration from her paws thundering up thru the yard. 2. Skittish as hell when we brought her home , It took about three weeks before she wanted anything to do with us (other than feed her) 3. She is AGILE .. But not graceful... She can clear a 6' tall concrete wall. But is also dumb enough to run full speed at a wall and not stop in time... She actually knocked herself out the first time she did this , , and then jumped up , shook her head and proceeded to bark at the wall she just hit and cuss it out. . 4. Of all our dogs she has become the most sensitive, The biggest cuddler and DEFINITELY the biggest attention Whore of all our dogs (there are four ) 5. And of course .... There is the talking.... And more talking... And more talking..... Its like a goldarn malamute or Husky.. The gal likes to talk .

Some dogs are born that way. You can pull her out of it but it takes time. Be gentile at all times, no sudden moves and if you get frustrated walk away as she will sense it. Short silent encouragement sessions two or three times a day not lasting more than 5 minutes. If she is comfortable on a leash totally silent walks work great. By silent I mean no talking and as she becomes more comfortable around you soft talking (like talking to a baby when rocking them to sleep) Don't give up on her as she can still be the best dog you ever had. It'll take time probably more than a month if you do a great job. If you don't see progress in two months for a trainers help.

I was told my girl was a BMC when I got her about 2 years ago. They told me she was about 5 months old BUT she’s still the same size lol I guess she must be mixed with something but I have no idea what.

hi there! my family just adopted a dog from a nearby petshop, they said that he was a breed of pug and french bulldog idk how he could come up with that, but after several "research" we found out that our dog is a BMC. it's been a long time since we have a dog in our house, the last time we had a dog was 10 years ago and it was a Labrador. we've only had him for several days now, and our BMC, we name him Rocky, has been showing a very loving nature but we've seen in the internet that BMC is also a hunting dog and tends to be sensitive, so is there anything we need to be aware of in training him? like, does BMC develop aggressive traits, or how are they towards children bc we have kids around the house? thanks!

Louisa Mononutu i have a bmc mixed with Rhodesian Ridgeback named Roxy. At first when she net my kuds my daughter was overly affectionate and i noticed Roxy would look at her sideways and it made me nervous but after a while Roxy accepted her as part of her pack. They live each other now and Roxy is very protective if my daughter now.

I hear since the old man Lander passed place has been turned into a puppy mill. In my opinion best bloodlines are Carnathan and Weatherford's Ben.

BMC Lovers - S.O.S. Our 3yr old / F -needs someones help. She will have to be surrendered to Animal Shelter if i can not find her a home. A teenager, that has been harassing our yard and tormenting her , every chance they got -- finally got his - She bolted , bite him on the ankle (2 punctures ) She could have done a lot worse. The parents, are going after everything they possibly can get from a claim , so if we keep her, we are considered un-insurable. I do not want her going into a home where they have no idea what / how to take care of a BMC. I have more info if someone , will take time to reach out and help to find her a new , Loving home that knows this breed. Loyal/ Strong/ Fast / Very Protective/ Smart / Lives to work & Please

Sadly, time ran out And we had to surrender her, to local shelter. Where she still sits & waits. Miss her everyday. Have hopes, that someone - that knows this breed, will find her and give her a forever home. Very smart, Fast learner, That one incident was the only problem we ever had. She could be trusted inside home up to 6 hours (never gone, longer then that) nothing was ever disturbed. One time, spaced out - left meat out on counter, was amazed it was still there when i arrived back home ) Knows difference between " go for Walk" or "Lets go for Ride" Would gently nuzzle me in morn telling me she needed to go outside to hurry up. Loves bones, nastier the better - they would stink so wld tell her to drop it, leave in mudroom , she would But would sit by door and whimper till i told her "Enough". She would. Could easily jump our back yard fence, never did. For treats, knew difference in what she was getting Just holler out which, she seemed to go to proper spot (raw carrot, she go by chair ( so i cld hold it )) - Yogurt, to her dish. She knew to sit and wait till released w/ OK to eat. She would start out sleeping next to me on floor but often, found her in morning sleeping in Hall to where she could see both Front n back doors. We had stopped, having problems w/ Squirrels raiding our veg garden with her Now they are back. If we watch TV, just holler out TV and she would mozzy in - to watch with us . Only neg thing i have to admit Does not do good with fireworks --- but here, it is like a continuous war zone for weeks. OK Am starting to tear up need to stop

If you get a puppy and are consistent in correcting unwanted behavior you should have no problem. If you adopt and older dog it could be a challenge or in could be fine depending on the dog. Just be sure to introduce the dog to every animal and situation you can think of. Correct unwanted behavior and award wanted behavior. Slip collars and chokers work great for corrections the thing is that the timing has to be correct. It is real easy to learn but if you don't know how ask someone who does to show you and you'll get it in a matter of minutes.

I got my black mouth cur from my brother who breeds them with Rhodesian Ridgebacks for hog hunting. She is the most muscular beautiful dog I've ever seen. Never had an accident in the house since i got her at 6months old. She is for the most part friendly to everyone but she does like to keep girls from getting too close to me. In a friendly way though lol. She'll lick them and wag her tail but she'll do it while sitting inbetween us. My little C-blocking Black Mouth Ridgeback. Wouldn't trade her for the world though thats my bitch

It might bite a lot, try and focus its biting to things that aren't your body i.e a sock or a toy

TheGoatGaming I got my puppy at 8 weeks. Pretty easy to train. More body language and less yelling.(all dogs really). High energy but once you wair them down they're easier to train. They love to chew things and chase things. Introduce them to kids and other animals early.

I believe I just rescued one from our local pet pound. The people there didn't know where he came from. My cousin posted a picture of a dog on his facebook and when I asked him what kind of dog it was, my cousin answered "a black mouth cur" He looked just like my dog and I do believe he is this pure bred dog. I named him Lucky II after my neighbors dog that I kept for my neighbor while he worked. Lucky I passed away in our house and after several months I got my Lucky II and name him in honor of my neighbors dog. My Lucky II does seem to want to chase cats and I am handicapped and have a hard time trying to hold him when walking with my rolator walker. I would love to have someone help me train him as he is a very sweet and wonderful dog. I know he was a gift from the universe when he came into my life and that he is very special!
