I love the irony of "How shall they show the world their ties are cut, and their lust is quelled? " Its like how can I say that I don't care about money if I don't have money at the first place. There has no way to prove it.

It’s also sarcastic, she’s basically saying how the monks are doing it all to show how “accomplished” they are. A kasaya is supposed to be a sign of humility because it is originally made from pieces of clothing discarded by non monks. To use the money example, charity is a good act because it provides for the poor. But in the hands of the avaricious it is used as a performance, which they exploit by gaining prestige as a philanthropist even as they gather their wealth at expense of others. Charity becomes a means and not the end.

The engish translation may be bit off as the orginal words in Chinese is not lust for gold specifically, but lust in general for fortune, fame, women and otherwise, and kasaya is a piece of clothing that signifies greatness in a monk that would include the monk quelling the lust and severing the ties to the secular world. The irony is the fact that Jinchi is obssesed with the kasaya means that he has not achieved such greatness in his learning over the years.

Visually stunning and carried a very deep message!!! GREAT ANIMATION! When someone becomes a monk, they’re expected to let go of all worldly desires-things like wealth, ambition, and material possessions. I honestly never imagined that something like a kasaya, a monk’s robe, could become as coveted in the monk’s world as jewelry is to regular people. In the original story, Elder Jinchi, already has an entire storage full of kasayas collection. Yet, it’s never enough for him. The animation captures this perfectly, showing him controlling all these kasayas and making them swirl around like he’s obsessed. Meanwhile, the kasaya that Tang Sanzang (Tang Shan Zhang) has is on a whole other level. Some say it’s not only adorned with pearls but was actually given to him by the goddess Guanyin herself.And this is where things take a dark turn. Elder Jinchi becomes so obsessed with Tang Sanzang's kasaya that he’s even willing to kill for it. It’s honestly sad how all of his years of hard work and dedication to be a high ranking monk, get vanish in an instant only because a piece of cloth The story really shows how even those who are supposed to be free from worldly attachments can still fall victim to them. Bonus Trivia: The frog at the beginning of the animation represents the Chinese Gold Toad. You can easily find this gold toad statue in Chinese stores-a toad with a coin in its mouth-usually placed near the cashier, as it's believed to attract wealth. This is why, in the animation, the frog leads the young Elder Jinchi to the bear spirit and its precious items

Ending of Chapter 1: A child named Jin Chi had wanted to become a monk since childhood. One day, he encountered a black bear who took a liking to him. The bear saw that Jin Chi was chasing after a golden toad, so it gave him the treasure. Seeing that Jin Chi had nowhere to go, the bear directed him to the temple. When the young monk arrived at the temple, he noticed that everyone else had a monk's kasaya except for him. He felt very inferior, thinking that without a kasaya, he wasn't worthy of being a monk. He thought to himself, "Bereft of a kasaya, how shall I show the world my ties are cut and my lust is quelled?" The black bear, unable to bear this, transformed itself into his kasaya and silently supported him from behind. Jin Chi eventually became the abbot, but his obsession with the kasaya grew even stronger. However, he continued to wear the kasaya that the black bear had transformed into, until one day, Tang Sanzang appeared. Jin Chi was attracted to Tang Sanzang's kasaya and decided to claim it for himself. It's unclear whether the black bear was jealous of being replaced or if Jin Chi set the fire to cover his tracks, but the temple was burned down. From that moment on, his worldly ties were truly severed, and the lust quelled.

It's actually Wukong who redirected the fires to the rest of the temple. Jinchi had conspired with his two of his most devoted disciples; Guang Zhi and Guang Mou, both are demons you can encounter in game. Guang Mou had suggested they burn down the small room Tansang and Wukong were residing in. Wukong caught wind of this and decided to set the other place aflame
@vincez691
@vincez691 15 дней назад
To add to this, wukong after hearing their plans, goes to the heavenly palace to borrow the same artifact that you use in game the “fire mantle”. The person that he borrows it from asks “why do you want this in particular, it can only save one person from burning. When you can ask the loong king to just use water and put out the entire temple fire.” Wukong says he’s doing this on purpose as the people that were planning this evil deed are getting what they deserve. In the end the entire temple burns down (except for wukong and his master) and the abbot commits suicide

★ This is the story of what happened at the end of chapter one: • It is said that long, long ago, a young novice monk wandered deep into the forest and unexpectedly encountered a colossal Black Bear Guai. Yet, contrary to expectations, the bear did not devour the monk but instead gifted him a sack filled with gold and silver. The bear then guided the novice to a secluded temple at the foot of the mountain. • From a young child, the novice diligently cultivated his practice and eventually became the revered abbot, leading hundreds of monks. He developed a profound passion for collecting kasayas (Buddhist robes), accumulating and wearing countless robes until he believed no other could possibly pique his interest. • One day, the abbot met Tang Sanzang, the master of Sun Wukong. Enchanted by Tang Sanzang's exquisite kasaya, the abbot borrowed it. Influenced by the cunning schemes of Guangzhi and Guangmou to steal the kasaya and burn Tang Sanzang's quarters, the abbot's long-dormant desires resurfaced. Consumed by greed, he set fire to the temple, causing the deaths of countless monks. The precious kasaya, however, fell into the hands of Black Bear Guai. Overwhelmed by grief and remorse, the abbot struck his head against a wall, ending his life. • Despite years of cultivation under the guidance of the Bodhisattva Guan Yin, Black Bear Guai remained perplexed. Why had the young novice resisted the allure of wealth yet succumbed to the temptation of a mere kasaya? • The Bodhisattva Guan Yin smiled and replied, "Without that kasaya, how could sentient beings discern whether their attachments and desires to the mundane world had truly been severed?

TLDR: Monk wants to look good rather than be good both figuratively and literally as the cloak signifies a higher rank. The bear and monk want to be good, they subsequently rise to the highest ranks available and thereafter teach morality to others not as well versed in scriptures. But in the end they are each still beholden to their nature whether it be Envy or Greed. The Monk is envious because he spent years of his life teaching others yet the Kasaya(cloak) from Guanyin(Buddhist goddess) was given to someone else. Note that he starts out dressed plainly but as he rises in rank so too does his clothes get more fanciful. The Monk doesn't feel appreciated and feels that Kasaya should go to him instead. The Temple he presides in bears her name. Has he not been her most faithful servant? Has he not dedicated years upon years of his life to her? Can he not be forgiven if say the cloak was misplaced in a disaster? Ultimately he is swept up by his desire symbolized by the wind and flames and loses everything. The bear asks why does a monk who should be free of all desires still lust after the cloak? Guanyin answers that he seeks to differentiate himself and seem more morally upright from others through clothes. In Western terms it's like what Cicero says "Few are those who wish to be endowed with virtue rather than to seem so" but also how anyone can fall prey to their desires.

Cutscene animation explaination: in "Journey to the West" novel, Sanzang and Wukong was on the road and rest at a monastery, the Monastery Chief [MC- JinChi, he's also the little monk you see at the start of the animation] by the time is 270yrs old and desire for kasaya [he have a collection of them], but when he see Sanzang's kasaya he cried and asked Sanzang to bring it to his room for a try (Sanzang's kasaya is made by gods and have many treasure, pearls on it, anyone who worthy to wear it shall not go to Hell, even gods will respect the one who wear it, ... for the worthy one it will be free but for the unworthy one the kasaya price is 7000 pound of gold...), he desire it, his desire burning him, if he can keep Sanzang and Wukong 1 day, he will have 1+ day to wear it, but not forever [unless Sanzang died]; Guangmuo see that and tell him that he will kill Sanzang for his master by burning the monastery so that the kasaya is forever belong to the MC. But Wukong know about the fire and borrow the Heavenly King the Fire-Protecting-Cage, so that the whole monastery is burned but the tower where Sanzang slept. The fire is an metaphor for the burning desire. As for the Black Bear Demon: We will see how the MC corrupted through BBD. It dont want to eat human, it just want to study, practice so that one day it will become better, enlightened. But it dont know how [ because it just a stupid animal; this represent 3 poisons in Buddhism - ignorance; greed or sensual attachment; and hatred or aversion], it need someone to teach it, so it must use material wealth like gold, silver coins in 2:05:38 to bribe the little monk, unintentionally sow in the little monk's soul desire/greed... Time goes by, the little monk grow up he began to desire the kasaya - which represent the rank of the monk, he began to find and collect valuable kasaya to satified himself [another type of desire/greed: vain-glory- as you can see in 2:06:33 kasaya - symbol of monks/goodness yet have a draw of a DEMON BEAR.] and when Sanzang from China bring the most valuable kasaya on Earth, he cant suppress his desire, and the end is just the wild fire that burn the monastery. Throuhout the journey, this is the most special adversity as the demon dont want to eat Sanzang flesh but we meet the "bravest" human - as he want to burn Sanzang alive :v. MC was a monk at very young age but he violated the murder commandment, the crime which few commited, just because he is blinded by greed/desire [metaphored in the novel when the MC cant see clear Sanzang's kasaya]. This created a full Circle of Misfortune [The Three Poisons lead to each others: Desire lead to Anger when things dont goes as what we want, Anger slowly become Hatred and Hatred lead to Ignorance when we cant distinguish Good/Bad, Right/Wrong and do the Evil. The MC spent hundreds of yrs to study yet bypass the most important Commandment, the question is: Is he really study from the beginning? Kasaya is made from throw away cloth, metaphor for Equanimity [let go of all obsession...], but the gods made a beautiful kasaya as a test for human heart and soul, the MC duty is to teach and lead others out of obsession, yet he himself fell right in it. Anyone who did wrong things but dont know dont have crime; but if you know it's wrong and yet still do is unforgiven. That's not the only lesson here in this adversity, Sun Wukong have a lesson too, if he's not arrogance, showoff the beautiful kasaya, then none of it would happened. The Eastern proverb: "Poisons come-in the mouth, Misfortune come-out the mouth" I translated the explanation from this link with some extra notes: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5sPdc2GTGr4.html , hope you like it and read the novel, watch the TV series 1986 when you have a chance. You'll love it.

The Chapter 1 ending animation is more than greedy. It is about we human like/need external stuff to symbolize something in order to proof our own identity. And how we are obsessed to this external symbol. The robe/kasaya became an external symbol for the monks, the higher your ranking or status, a more gorgeous robe/kasaya you will wear. But originally, the robe/kasaya is a symbol for monks to shows their humble and enlightenment to Buddhism. So, Jingchi is too arrogant and obsessed to superior status amongst the monks. Like many people wear Rolex not for knowing the time, but to show-off. But a Rolex could be also good for your to memorize your success, or to motivate yourself.

The cutscene is referencing the plot from Journey to the West, Jinchi the elder (one of the bosses from chapter 1 ) wants to steal Tang Sanzang’s kasaya by plotting a fire, instead this leads to his own demise.
@nk2003az

Here's actual breakdown: The hidden boss of this chapter JinChi(requires you to knock 3 bells to activate) was the monk in this cutscene. When he was young and playful, chased a fog into the forest, accidentally met the bear, the bear did not attack him but thought he was here to beg alms, so gave monk the gold he gathered. This wakes the greed in young monk's heart as he slowly grown to be the master, wearing fancy kasaya, and when he became the head of this temple. He has seen over 200 kasaya, thought he finally puts down the greed and changed into his original simple plain kasaya from the beginning, until one day The Sangzang pass by, and showed him a kasaya he never seen before, then he realised that is not his greed vanished, its the exisiting kasaya couldn't interest him anymore, now there is a better one, he finally knew that after all these years of practice, he still has not changed. This drive him crazy and told his disples Guangzhi & Guangmou to burn the room Sangzang slept so he could take the precious kasaya, but wukong turned the fire against him. Thats the tale told by this cutscene.
