I heard the budget was so low that it took them 7 years to film the first part, and also with countless actors having to play multiple roles, as well with terrible safety conditions.
@@thien0300 they apparently went to TVB to learn the technique since they didn't have any experience in fly rigs but the TVB team didn't actually teach them anything of value, resulting in the injuries on set. also the network undermine the director because she doesn't have that much experience in television being a female director in a male dominated industry...
@@elkefransisca3747I’ve never seen it but elder Jinchi actor seemed well old so In a way he gets to be remembered in even more ways and perhaps longer if the show ever fades into obscurity ever get randomly emotional?
THE TV SHOW HAD SO MUCH SOUL!!! This was 1980s China, completely impoverished and they still managed to make it and many parts of poor Asian countries had this as their childhood show
The 80s Chinese TV shows were great. They were all made with dedication and heart, with the director and actors all being paid no more than factory workers. It is an era before commercialisation. They made shows that were true masterpieces. The Dream of Red Mansion was an even bigger master piece that has not been surpassed to this day, with attempts of remakes with budgets hundreds, thousands times, but come not even close. Money doesn't buy soul, and star culture in many ways contaminated the pure dedication and love of acting of the past. The super rich stars today just cannot act the same way as the humble actors of the past. It is more about personal identity and face recognition today, rather than actual acting.
Slight error: the Tiger Vanguard in the TV series should be the father, the original Tiger Vanguard that we fought in Kingdom of Sahali and not the present one drinking the blood from the blood pool.
true, the tiger in the TV series should be the one we met when travel to the past, he then captured Wukong master, but lost to a duel with Zhu Bajie and died, left 2 sons behind. After that Yellow Wind Sage then get tamed by bodhisattva Lingji then betrayed him under Celestial court's influence and back to his former place. The 2 tiger sons seek revenge on him think he should take responsibility for their father death but they lost, 1 joint him and became Tiger Vanguard while 1 ran into the village and became Mad Tiger
It's funny, I remember in one of my Chinese/Literature(语文) textbook accessories during high school, there was indeed a reading comprehension article that talked about how the Journey to the West (the continued season from 1999) TV show's special effect was so bad compared to Star Wars (most likely The Phantom Menace).
If you read the autobiography by the director you'll know this show barely got any budget, the production company only willing to give them one camera for the entire show and what's worse that camera is the one that no other team wants cause of it's poor quality.
Due to the lack of funding and limitations of visual technology. All characters from the original TV series (even monsters) are played by humans. Therefore taking human form, which is why they look so funny. I'm glad we finally have a modern sequel to see the accurate appearance of those characters
The text description of Sun Wukong has no skin, bones grow on the outside, and meat grows on the inside. He is very short and full of fangs, like a monster in hell.
Red boy in game: i will have my revenge (Linkin Park music plays in the background) Red boi in tv series: mom forcing me to have a haircut. I will never got to the barber again
To be fair the game focuses on the serious aspect while the series took on the mischievous wukong that he is. The first movie mix both of wukong's humour and seriousness
This is the 1986 version and is the best and most original one of them all. You guys should watch it if you want to fully understand the story of Journey To The West novel ^^
@@psnfailout000 For example, Sanzang's image in the original book is not so kind, he is a nagging old monk a lot of the time, and it is not until the second half of the adventure that he begins to complete his transformation. But the TV series is filmed in the form of a unit drama, and it is necessary to ensure that each episode has a similar viewing experience, so Sanzang has been a good master from the beginning. The specific example is that Sun Wukong's tiger skin skirt was made by himself in the original book. But in the TV series, it was Sanzang who made it for him
@@psnfailout000 This is a very good definition of what "accurate" is. "Journey to the West" is not a bible or other mythological story, it is a novel in itself, and its predecessor is a series of plays. "Journey to the West" has been consumed by popular culture since it was created, and it is a cultural product of that era, a consumer product. Stories are there, but every era needs a vehicle to tell those stories in a "modern" way. Because there is no such thing as the most accurate version, it doesn't matter if it's accurate or not. In the 21st century so far, the game is the best , last century was the 1986 TV series
The whiteclad noble in Black Myth isn’t the same character. The original one died after he got struck by Wukong’s golden staff. In Black Myth, that snake guy was one of Erlang’s subordinates, and the replacement for the original whiteclad noble.
Yeah in the novel he and the Lingxuzi both took one hit each, and both got brain and blood spewing out (weirdly described in such a nonchalant way too), Guanyin was like "Cruel monkey what on Earth has gotten into you?!"
The first Journey to the West Novel came out in 1500s and had remained a popular and even rivals many video games and TV series today. So this IP had been popular for at least 500 years, which is pretty insane.
This TV series deserves a remake, just like BBC Doctor Who. The original version was very classic, but due to production costs and the technology at the time, many effects now appear somewhat rudimentary and comical. It would be great if they could create a new version, keep all the soundtrack and settings, and recreate the series in the style of The Lord of the Rings.
I would agree, but like lord of the rings, the actors and director of this version set a very high bar. There has been MANY remixes of Journey to the West and Monkey King IP, but non was received well compared to this version. Partially it's costuming and acting, but the other would be the screenwriting and the not respecting the source material when adapting. The actor plays Wukong to the T, and other versions seem to just be attempts to replicate his version (kind of like a robin Williams Genie situation)
We've actually remade it many times. But modern culture in the 21st century has ruined every version - and it feels like the first and fifth seasons of Game of Thrones
1:08 I think that may be a mistake. Whiteclad Noble wasn't a character in original story. The one who was on the other hand is Guangmou which was that snake guy you fight before the Noble. 1:30 Likeweise, actual Tiger Vanguard is guarding the entrance to Fubane Area in Secret Chapter. The blooddrinker is his son
i still think the reason why 1986 show is the most popuar adaptation is that the show was firstly aired on national television. Alot of special affect, audio design, costume design and so on is pretty damn outdated by comparsion to the current adaptations.
Special effects may become outdated, but the performance plot and music will always be passed down Wukong used its theme song for the final boss battle
no, it's iconic cause the acting was top tier. no one captured Wukong whimsy and just being a monkey as well as Liuxiaolingtong - they call came of as annoying especially Dicky Cheung's.
it's still the only series to nearly adapt the entire novel . Other versions omitted a lot of parts or just straight up changed or added shits . And of course the best portrayal of Sun Wukong of all time .
Eehh... Current adaptations don't look much less outdated, if at all, IMO, with their shitty CGI that doesn't remotely hold up. I realy wish someone would adapt it with modern technology/budget in a way that's actually convincing (or just have it be animated).
back then people were more traditional, the girls doesn't want to show their bellies on camera, even tho it's a close up, so some of the guys on set did the scene.
Yes, I read the entire report. In the 1980s, China was still very conservative. A singer was sentenced to eight years in prison for having a relationship with a member of the opposite sex. A woman was sentenced to death for having sex with 10 men. Now it seems that the entire society at that time was really too conservative!
The series introduced me to sun wukong character few years later i watched Dragon ball only to find out Goku's based on the stone monkey after seeing their similarities😂. The series is goated, i recommend anyone should watch it that's if ur interested in Wokung story
Sorri to bust your bubble but Wu Kong is not mythology he is worshipped and have shrines all across Asia !!! People pray to him for he has become enlightened and became a Buddha !!! So please don't insult his origin by calling mythology !! To many Asian people he truly existed !!
@@tonyawillams9442 Christianity, Judaism and Islam is also mythology to people who does not believe in any religion. Mythology is a sacred matter, there is no insult using that term. Theology is just mythology that some people believe real.
@@klovershows3823 Monkey King is based on a true story of a famous monk, Xuan Zang of the Chinese Tang Dynasty (602-664). After a decade of trials and tribulations, he arrived on foot to what is today India, the birthplace of Buddhism. Journey to the West is a fictional story !!! Big difference !!
I would like to bring to the attention of all wakong lovers to look into an old unknown game for the psvita called soul sacrifice. If you loved the lore of wukong you will love that story as well.
It is a powerful game engine like the Unreal Engine 5 gives the chinese game devs far more creative freedom than the traditional film making technique that allows them to recreate and reinvent the visual of this chinese mythological world. it is a breathe of fresh air on an IP that has hundreds of movies and tv shows already
well for the most part the TV series had also budget restrictions (literally only had ONE camera while filming), and it also had to be family friendly. it's still loyal to the source material, but given the novel is very episodic and sort of lighthearted for the most parts, BMW serves as a sequel to that story, and as a darker alternate universe of the JTTW lore (sort of canon divergent)
The novel is a satire of the real empire. This is a novel set in the Ming Dynasty. On the surface, Journey to the West is about going to India to get the real Buddhist scriptures. Another meaning is that this is a team doing something very difficult. The things they encountered were used to express the dark side of society at that time. In the novel, the team is about to reach the last stop, the Buddhist center, which is on a mountain. Unbelievably, the monsters at the foot of this mountain are very powerful and cruelly slaughter humans. The novel describes a sea of blood and a mountain of corpses. Even Sun Wukong felt creepy.
TV series had a few dark moments and knew when to take things seriously (except for the whole Bull Demon King family thing - sure, it was his fault for leaving his wife for a fox concubine but Wukong and team made it worse by getting his son enslaved by Guanyin and by disrespecting his wife and concubine multiple times. It's no wonder why the Bull is so depressed in the game lmao)
@@李四-z4d and the people who committed wrongs and evil things get away with it because they know powerful people in high places. Like how the demons just get away because they are the mounts of the gods.
some characters in tv series are really realistic. you know, not all evil people look like they're crazy ugly and demonic. you get the raw humanities in tv series. They can be kind to you on surface and constantly smilng. sometimes in the series it's really funny and after laughing you suddenly realize it's creepy and get chills down your spine.
Journey to the West is the TV childhood's series of every kids in whole Asia. Director is a female, it was filmed by ONLY ONE cameraman - the director's husband. The intro, outro was written by handwriting cuz they didn't had enough money to bring that on computer:) each of the actor, actress (even the 4 main) had at least 4-5 other roles in that film. So fvcking hard and poor in the vfx and the whole crew but they did a masterpiece. So iconic that from the 1986 till now, there is no remake one better than it, even it has a better vfx
I watched that show since I was a kid, and it became my childhood, I know that in the west very few people know about this movie, after learning that the movie was made a long time ago, In 1986, technology was not as developed as it is now, so it could only be done manually or simply, however if you want to understand the game's plot, you should watch the movie to understand better.
1:17 This is wrong. Whiteclad Noble in game is one of the brothers of Erlang. The figure in TV show is 灵虚子, which is a wolf; in game he is the hanged dead body nearby the third bell. The boss Lingxuzi or 凌虚子 is like a successor of 灵虚子 (you see their name is similar but different in one character).
I still prefer the tv series, it’s just more funny and made lots of peoples day, some characters in the game to me doesn’t really look like how it is supposed to and how they are supposed to act and talk.
Koreans gon be hella mad, cuz we be stealing Korean culture, but little did they know, the guy who wrote journey to the west is 500 years older than Korea💀
@@NicoGV well, after blackmyth wukong came out, they simply said the arthor of jttw is a Korean, and all the buildings in blackmyth are Korean buildings, like we’re all just here enjoying the game, come on Korea.
Ik new fans are looking at this and am wondering wtf is some of these stuff. But you’d almost have to watch it when it just came out. There’s a reason why this IS the favorite version to JTTW to long time fans, because even though budget is low, they did everything to make it as nice as possible. Lore wise it also as close as it can get to being correct too.
If someone make a Journey to the west TV show, using modern visual effects, and doesn't deviate from the original novel, how cool would that be? That would be an other Lord of the rings to say the least.
Too make sure they don’t overshadow the protagonists. Anyways the Buddha Kid is Maitreya and not laughing Buddha, aka the next Buddha after the current Gautama
Well, the laughing Buddah actor in 1986 version passed away 9 years ago. Black myth wukong team decided to make a 9 years old kid looking to salute that actor. His next life age now should be 9 years old because it has been 9 years after his death
The game is causing me cognitive dissonance. How the characters look from the TV series are what I believed they should look like since childhood, I’m having a hard time adjusting to the game developers’ interpretation. To me, most Yaoguais should look more human form than monsters
Whiteclad noble in show: Dies instantly Whiteclad noble in game: "YOU FORCED MY HAND, NOW YOU SHALL FACE WHAT I TRULY AM!" ah sh- (btw i didnt see the show yet so i dont know whether he died instantly)
Maybe ppl in different cultyure don't know how huge Journey to the West is in China. Consider a culture with at least a billion ppl and over 400years most of them heard of or watched a version of JttY somewhere when they grow. Think of it as King Arthur or Hercules in China. It's a strange feeling to see JttY finally get a huge spotlight on the internet. The Internet connects us and sometimes brings us huge surprises and it's beautiful.
Man, watching this really remind me of how goofy Wukong is back then while game Wukong and the Chosen One take themself super seriously, i hope they make him more funky deadpool-style in the next game now that *spoiler He got Wukong's memories back in the true ending.
