I didn't know if everyone knew or not. Robert Bingham was the lead guitarist for Black oak Arkansas in the 80s. He passed away in September. He was a good man and a good friend. He was my friend for 35 years. He lived right here in Middle Tennessee. He was the best guitarist I'd ever seen live or on recording. He was having a rough time anyway he was very close with his family and his mom and his sister and his nephew all passed away in the few months before his death. He was a good friend and I will miss him. I hope you're still rocking on in the afterlife my friend.
I was born in '63, so I'm a few years younger than you, but I totally agree! The studio version of "Jim Dandy" came out the winter I was in 5th grade. Worth it to be older now, to have been young then!
@@dalenincehelser5747- You never said if you were drafted or not so I'll make you feel a little better about yourself. I was a dumb a** and joined the Marine Crops for 4 years in 1971. Went to Vietnam for a year (1972) but I was in the Air Wing and the ground action for American Troops was slowing down. That was the longest 4 years of my life. Ha..
What kind of personality did Ruby Starr have? Was she just energized on stage? I just found out she is from the same area my husband is from in Ohio but she is older than him so they’re paths never crossed.
Hello I concur with you 👍 I saw blackoak Arkansas and had front row seats right under Ruby stars mic , as a 12 year old boy, and everyone stood up and I was under her, Houston texas!!!
Jim Dandy was awesome..seen him without Ruby..he put on a show..my 1st concert..16 ..right at the stage..Of course he had to take a toke ..like said he was awesome
Little did anyone know their drummer Tommy Aldridge would end up being one of the best drummers in the world. The man is a monster behind a drum kit 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
@@spottedliver , I believe that..to me he’s not like anyone else. Has his own style of attacking the drums and cymbals. And his solos are awesome, not all drummers should do solos…I’ve seen quite a few of Tommy’s solos that were just mind blowing . I’ve seen a lot of drummers in my life and I just think Tommy’s probably the best…
Black Oak Arkansas was REALLY BIG back in the early to mid 70’s...Yes, Jim Dandy influenced David Lee Roth...they could have passed for brothers! It’s amazing how now Black Oak is almost forgotten. I worked at a club that Ruby Starr and her band played at after she left Black Oak to go solo. Ruby was, without a doubt, one of the most DYNAMIC singers I have ever seen... She literally COMMANDED the stage! P.S. Ruby was an admirer of Janis Joplin...I can see why!
Ruby Starr really was way underrated & I could never figure out why. She had an electric & magnetic stage-presence, unmatched by any other woman rocker, in my opinion. I had the good fortune of seeing them play many, many times in central WI back in the late 70s & early 80s; they never disappointed. What wonderful memories. If I ever get to OH I'm gonna lay flowers on her grave. Thanks for all the memories, Ruby.
Vaguely aware of the band..but not Ruby..wow..she's really got it. A Spitfire/Firecracker wrapped in the body of a 5ft. Strawberry Shortcake. Given the right record company/mgmt she Could have had a solo career..as it was it Looks like music peaked for her in early to mid 20's. Plus she went out in a very hard time with way with Lung cancer leading to brain tumour just like what happened to EVH. RIP Ruby you were one in a million.
@ Alissa: OMG, your comment about WLS could start a whole other comment thread! I used 2 listen 2 WLS on an old AM radio back in the mid 70's - and I lived in Sheboygan, WI back then. No kidding!
Jim Dandy, truly one of the most entertaining performers ever. He was and is absolutely genuine. Say what you will about the music. But they were downright fun and entertaining. Truly one of a kind and the last of a dying breed.
They had so much fun on stage, it was contagious towards the audience-- ALL had fun at their concerts! They'd usually come out after the show in a while and talk with fans. DAMN great band, and hugely underappreciated!!!
@Big Bill O'Reilly You basically lost every single morsel of credibility with this statement..Thus catapulting David Lee Roth into our hearts as a true hero. {When they lettin' you out? Still got a few months left? Rest easy..ain't nobody out here waitin' for ya no-how.}
@@phillipholt6005 me too seen them at cal jam and at golden bear in huntion beach cal in 80s he bent down and said that boys 16. Years öld i was in a body cast so they put me next to stage The kid was in a band called streets that s all i knpw cool shit O lived im cal if i ever want to hear abought it ley me know.
Saw her and her band live in what passed for a nightclub in Stevens Point, Wisconsin when I was in college, in a previous century. The absolute real thing.
@Kevin Shadden I came here looking for a video of Jim to see just how much Dimond Dave "borrowed" from him, and Ruby stole the show IMHO. Never seen or heard her before, but she's certainly a starr.
Saw Jim prance across the stage in 1972 when Black Oak played Fayetteville, N.C. in front of 10,000 fans. Saw him at Gussie's in Empire/Coos Bay, Oregon in front of 25 fans. Same great soul, same gravelly voice, kissed my wife's hand for saying he was wonderful.
Allman Brothers are/were wonderful, but they don't put on the "show" like Black Oak. The Marshall Tucker Band was INCREDIBLE, and I would put Toy & his brother, Tommy, up against any musicians in the world. BUT, just like the Allman Brothers, they just stand there and play their incredible hit songs, and don't ever get close to the fun, wild "show" you get with Black Oak Arkansas and Jim "Dandy" Mangrum. I LOVE all 3 bands.
Actually got to meet the whole band in Las Vegas at a very small venue. It was a club on Boulder highway owned by calamity Jane. Try where so down to Earth. Thy all signed my concert Stub . And Jim told me to go get a beer out of the refrigerator. It was full of cans of Bud. Only sad part was it was a short time after Ruby star has passed. She was such a beautiful lady . And a true Red head. One of the best nights of my life. Sorry it was so long ago. But great times all the same.
I remember watching this when it aired on TV back when the record had just been released Glued to the screen and volume turned up loud jamming to Jim Dandy with Ruby rocking the planet! Good times back then!!
They were a great band to see live. They were backup along with Brownsville Station at a Johnny Winter concert I attended in Vancouver BC around 1973. BOA stole the show, first time I had ever heard of them. They were so well received in Vancouver, they returned and I seen them again about a year later.
i hung out one night with jim dandy after a show....it was at a nightclub in the middle of nowhere in TN......he was so fucking cool to all us hillbillies after he came off stage ..he did an amazing show ...i got drunker than a mofo and all these years later l still remember him playing his guts out for us.
Mine too! What a show! I couldn’t have had a better time! Blast had 75 Memphis. During their old Mid South Fair, annual event. Mid South Coliseum was packed with fans. Aerosmith was their warm up band playing Toys in the Attic album that night. Local Memphis band was on stage first. Not sure, maybe Target first.
Matthew Paluch. Now THAT'S what I'm talkin' about! One of my 2 or 3 favorite drummers of all time!Saw him many times with The Pat Travers Band... where he played with one of the most underrated bass players in rock & roll: Mars Cowling
Saw them in Charlotte in the mid 70s. Jim threw a towel in the crowd and I caught it. My girl friend still has it. As good as a concert as you would ever see.
Back in the late seventies, Ruby Star and the Grey Band would come to a small club in my home town in Wisconsin. We never missed an opportunity to spend an evening with her. Rest In Peace, sweet lady.
Dave Arndt -Thanks Dave. I was watching and thinking, Ruby Starr, Ruby Starr, where do I know that name? Of course, seeing her in Wisconsin with the Grey Band! Met her in the ladies room at a venue in Milwaukee and she was so tiny and approachable. Good memories.
Looks like a great show! Looks like they truly are having a good time performing. Ruby steals the show! Watch the video with her singing “Maybe I’m Amazed” - great talent!
i saw this on tv . it was don kirchners "rock concert" it was on once a month or so after johnny carson on nbc. i was blown away then and i still enjoy this kick ass performance!
This song is the ultimate southern rock anthem. I was more of a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan but I still toss the song around in my mind like it was just released yesterday.
Chuck Berry is rock and roll music. Bo Diddley is rock and roll music. Link Wray is rock and roll music. This is second-rate blues rock from the mid-seventies (two decades later!) with a third-rate Janis Joplin impersonator.
Ted Nugent, Black Oak Arkansas 1978 Baton Rouge, Louisiana riverside centroplex, cat scratch fever tour, bad to the freakin bone. One of the best concerts of those days
Jeff Beck, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, Aerosmith and Black Oak Arkansas July 4th 1976 bicentennial celebration at Groves Stadium in Winston Salem NC.
