As a Biracial, multiethnic woman, Daralyse Lyons is uniquely empowered to use her seemingly disparate background as a catalyst to bring about a more inclusive world.
Daralyse has always refused to choose between her black and white identities. In this talk she tells us why embracing biracial identity is critical to overcoming systemic racism. Known as the Transformational Storyteller, Daralyse has written more than two dozen full-length books, a handful of short stories, and countless articles, performed in various plays and improv comedy shows and occupied a variety of stages to tell powerful stories in order to make a positive difference in the world. A member of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and a summa cum laude graduate of NYU, with a double-major in English and Religious Studies and a minor in History, she is relentless about advancing comprehensive and multidimensional understandings of history. Her perspective is one that looks to acknowledge the past while refusing to become incapacitated by it. As the creator of the "Demystifying Diversity Podcast," and the author of "Demystifying Diversity: Embracing Our Shared Humanity" and the award-winning children’s book "I'm Mixed!" (which she penned under the pseudonym Maggy Williams), Daralyse has written and spoken extensively on a variety of subjects pertaining to diversity, equity and inclusion. She has found her life’s purpose as a DEI expert and inclusivity strategist. It is very rare to see biracial people that embrace both their races publicly & proudly stand their ground & embrace their identity even when met with resistance. Absolutely loved this!💛

It surely did. VOLUMES. Videos like this help so much. Not only bringing awareness to those who do not understand and those who just do not know at all, but also giving a voice, understanding, clarity and comfort, to those who actively go through these experiences daily. Hearing messages like this (which are sooo rare) help biracial people like myself, feel like guilty and ashamed of their race. Even more aware of the things we say or do unconsciously to be smaller in all spaces of life as to not offend or make others uncomfortable. Instead of dealing with this from other races, we are dealing with it from all races. The most disheartening, from our own. I appreciated the message from this video beyond words. 🤎🩶🤍

The brilliance and insight that Daralyse Lyons shares here about her life will help change our world into a better more peaceful and understanding place to live. I’m proud to know Daralyse and proud that Daralyse was the developmental editor for both my books, Up Not Down Syndrome: Uplifting Lessons From Raising A Son With Trisomy 21 and my new book upcoming with my coauthor, April Beard, Up Bow Down Bow: A Child with Down Syndrome and His Journey to Master the Cello.

Great Talk. Very idealistic but that’s what Ted Talks are about. Very happy that she was afforded a wonderful childhood being in two spaces. Most are not giving the opportunity to select and have that sturdy upbringing but one person can do a lot of good

This is beautiful. As a multi-racial woman I did not experience growing learning about Botha sides of my culture . The affects of not experiencing this has been traumatic and is still today has affects on me today .. I really appreciate this video and I love seeing someone fully embrace who they are ! ❤

That's why I am convinced that IR couples should not procreate. Not for racism but because it's selfish to bring in the world human beings that will be mistreated by both communities. The experience of the lady is an exception. Unfortunately bi or multiracial children will always seen as outsiders, outcasts by both Blk and White ppl. And WP will never see them as one of them but they will see them as Blk no matter what. While BP won't accept them for being "not Blk enough". Is it unfair? It is but that's how society works and lives,

Amen. Choose love and choose life. If any young woman is reading this, don’t ever let shame be a reason for killing your child in the womb. That choice will stay with you forever.

Your case is extremely rare. It doesn't represent the vast majority of biracial and multiracial people. Good for you that your experience of life was good but you should be more realistic. You are the exception and not the rule.
