I never understood the problem folks had with cleaning their firearms. Good way to get to know them. I'll clean sometimes just because I haven't used them for a while!

I agree with Chris, cleaning my long guns and handguns is a pleasure to me, even my flintlocks. Sometimes I clean them when they are not even dirty 😊

I hate cleaning black powder since I mostly fire double barrels and revolvers that have tons of places for the filth to get to and I make sure to get every speck off them. I’ve never had a problem cleaning smokeless and it has been a habit since I first started shooting to clean as soon as I get home from the range

I do the same Chris, I have some firearms I love but they are my "hobby" pieces and don't get used as much so I drag them out and clean them periodically.

Hi Mark. I am a new subscriber, but have been a black powder shooter for around 40 years. Your cleaning routine is fairly close to mine, with a few exceptions. I clean my black powder cartridge guns at the range before I come home. Presently I use MPRO-7 to clean the bore, and I use a ..41 cal nylon bore brush instead of a jag. I find it works better than a jag does( used a jag for years, and still do on occasion). When I get home, I give the rifle another cleaning, but I use Hoppes #9. I don't have any Colt rifles, but shoot Sharps and Winchester lever guns. Also, black powder fowling isn't so much corrosive, as it is hygroscopic ( attracts moisture from the air, and will result in rusting. The more humid the climate, the worse the rusting.) Keep up the videos. I enjoy them, and would like to a lightning disassembled.

Great video. Thanks. Great point about using cleaning rod guides. My high wall from 1898 in 32-40 has no rifling for about a half inch from the muzzle. It still shoots very well with the Loverin style 323470 so I don't worry about it, and I always use a guide to not make it worse.

I am! I just got in from an opening morning hunt. Put in several miles up and down the mountain, but didn't get any shooting in. It didn't seem like exercise 'til I got home and sat down. 😉 Now I'm starting to feel it. Even a tough day hunting beats the best day in the shop!

Except for shooting the smokeless round last, I was pleased to see you have nearly the same cleaning routine that I’ve been using. Even to the extent of reusing the other side of the patch. Cheap German. 😂 I used hot soapy water on my muzzleloader but have settled on 10% Ballistol and water for my and single shots. Works great. Thanks for sharing your process with us Mark. 😊

It's not going to work in the field conditions, but goodness, we should just shove a hot water hose with a tapered sealing wedge into the action, and crank up the water full power. Watch all that black gunk fly right out of the muzzle. haha Dry and lubricate the bore immediately after, of course.

Thanks for the video! Allot of good advice here! I use a piece of rubber hose wich fits the chamber, taped with duckttape to a small plastic funnel. First thing I do when cleaning is, insert it in the chamber and poor hot water through. Then use cleaning patches some windex and finnish with a light coat of gun oil. It works for my Trapdoor, Gras, Rolling Block and Borchardt. Still every bore is different, it takes way more patches in the Trapdoor then in the Borchardt.

No firearm is cleaner than a properly cleaned blackpowder firearm. Some of my shoot'n buddies would leave the last fired (fire-formed) cartridge in the breech while doing the initial crud removal.

Great Video! When I was a young man, learning about historical firearms, and going to gun shows, my dream was to purchase an original Winchester, Colt or Sharps rifle from the Old West period to have and shoot. It was a warm fuzzy feeling, but I am very glad I was poor back in those days. What are the odds those old rifles were cleaned properly back in the day after every firing by Cowboys and Indians?🤣Not likely ever if at all. If it wasn't a museum piece from day one it was used up quickly and corrosion took over almost every bore. So, I have a collection of Italian replicas that I have a lot of fun shooting to my hearts content.

Thanks for showing how to clean the rifles with BP . Also what to use to clean it , I am use to clean the muzzle loader . I use Murphy oil mix with Rubbing Alcohol in my muzzle loader. It dose not take much to clean it , the down side is that if you do not take the muzzle loader apart you will take the finish off the stock.

Nice Mark just a heads up we use delrin rods for our sharps rifles with a jag turned on the end and a 8-32 insert for a nylon brush. Now when were shooting we clean between shots one damp patch with a 50/50 mix of distilled water and that pink rv antifreeze followed by a dry patch.

Great video to show how easy it can be to clean up if your prepared. I used to carry a pull through and a pocket sized bottle of Windex and Hoppys to clean up after shooting while out camping for the weekend then do a better job once home, does Windex hurt the bore if left? Nice Sharps.

Even before the video is getting going I can tell you the only two things on that table you need for black powder cleaning is the windex and the Ballistol. Actually plain water and Ballistol is all you need and generally all I use.

I'm surprised you didn't say anything about cleaning the inside of the magazine tube. On my replica 1873 lever action, the mag tube is by far the rustiest and hardest to clean, even with stainless steel spring and follower.
@thecinnabar8442
@thecinnabar8442 4 месяца назад
Not a bad idea to open up the mag tube and clean it from time to time but it would be a little overkill to dismantle the mag tube and clean it after each shooting. I don't know anybody who does that.

hot water, so it heats up the metal and that helps the dry off.
@dorisjohnson8857
@dorisjohnson8857 Год назад
@@grassroot011 With my BP revolvers and cylinders I use a bare nylon brush few strokes to loosen particulates up, then a patch or two wet with Moose Milk (1 part Ballistol 8 parts distilled water) then use a small high pressure distilled water steamer kettle (Walmart about $30) blasts the bore spotless right out the muzzle and heats the barrel good then dry it with a couple dry patches and then finally a patch damp with straight Ballistol. Same with the barrel/frame outsides without the bore brush.

Is there anything wrong with using a pull-through device to knock the major portion of the gunk out the muzzle for the first step before using a rod from the muzzle? I think I would do that first thing.

There are some of my old Milsurp rifles that never come clean...one I literally cleaned for a week, using many dozens of patches, probably over a hundred, and it never gets clean.... I even used foaming bore cleaner and left it in for a day or more and the patches still come out black or blue (copper). I just gave up

Great idea following up with a smokeless round to aid in the the cleaning process. Would it regular smokeless round be better, than a reduced load smokeless round ( the mimicking blackpowder kind ) for cleaning the barrel ? Thank you, Cheers, Cornelius
@gilbertdelgado6703
@gilbertdelgado6703 Год назад
Shooting a smokeless round is sort of like my practice of shooting a regular jacketed round through my revolvers after a day of shooting cast bullet loads. It cleans out any leading and leaves the bore nice and clean. Then clean as normal after that.

How do you clean the cartridge?
@willhamner4921
@willhamner4921 2 года назад
Excellent point to bring up! Your brass will need to be neutralized and cleaned just as PDQ as the firearms. Whenever I shoot BPCR (black powder cartridge rifle) , I always take a gallon water jug filled with water and a splash of Dawn Dish Soap. At the range, after each shot, the brass goes right into that jug and stays till I get home. Bouncing around in the truck plus a few good swishes causes the water to get really cruddy. When home, a good rinse or two in windex/Dawn/hot water. Then a pass through a universal de-capper die
@willhamner4921
@willhamner4921 2 года назад
Finish off with a wet tumble period with your favorite recipe cleaner and your brass is good as new.
