Black rat snakes are possibly the most underrated of all pet snakes. It is so much like a corn snake, but bigger, blacker, and dare I say, better? This sounds like the perfect pet snake, but is it? Is the black rat snake a good pet? Is the black rat snake the best pet snake for you?

They are so underrated! They have a horrible reputation for absolute non reason. My Texas rat was never handled at the breeders (He was over a year) but still was as great as a corn snake to handle off the bat.

Some years ago I found some damaged siding on my house and called in a handyman for repairs. As soon as he began demolition he started screaming "SNAKES!" Sure enough, there was an infestation of snakes in the cavities of the framing. By this time the neighbors were checking out the commotion, and one recognized the critters as rat snakes. The handyman eventually stopped hypervenilating, and asked why I wasn't screaming and jumping on a table. "Because I'd rather have rat snakes than rats." I see a nsnake or two from tim to time, but no rats.

So lucky, I never find snakes in old damaged stuff around here. Out of curiosity, was it winter? I think I have read that most snakes only gather to mate, to share space for brumation, or to bask together in the case of aquatic snakes. Brumating together, with other species of snake, is why I have read Black, and Grey rat snakes, as well as North American Water snakes have been called Pilot snakes, for the legend that they lead other snakes to shelter when it gets cold. But you can only trust anonymous internet sources so much.

I had a gray rat snake, I rescued it from a car engine. Even though she had a burn from the engine, she never offered to strike at me and went right onto frozen thawed. ( I took her to the vet, got the burn treated, and she was treated for parasites) She was a great snake for years. I loat her to a tumor. The vet put her down when she couldn't poop anymore.

I'm 49. When I was 8 I went fishing with my father. We caught no fish, but we caught three snakes -- a watersnake (non-venomous), a kingsnake, and a Great Plains Rat Snake. We let the first two back into the wild, but the GPRS seemed so docile and friendly that we decided to make him a nice terrarium and keep him. He lived for 9 years in captivity! In all that time, he never bit or even threatened to strike anyone. He seemed to look forward to gentle handling. He was always a solid eater. He was my Best Pet Snake.

This was my first snake interaction at 5. A local wildlife preserve had a young one, and they'd let kids interact with it for educational purposes. His name was Curly. 10 years later, at a local fair, the wildlife preserve had a booth with a massive black rat snake. I stopped by and told the guy about my experience with Curly as a kid only to find out that the massive one they had WAS Curly. He was easily twice as big, but just as docile. That individual snake is solely responsible for my love of herpetology. I'm turning 34 soon. In short, black rat snakes are my favorite species period.

When I was in college, in eastern PA, I found a black rat snake in the middle of the road during a heat wave. It was barely moving and looked like it had just lost a fight with a housewife with a broom. It was overheated, missing an eye, had a gash on the side of its neck, and bleeding in its mouth. I took it to the local pet store and they gave me some antibiotics to help keep it from getting an infection. One of their suppliers was in the store and said that it must have a broken vertebrae and told me to kill it by sticking it in the freezer. I didn't, I bought a 20 gallon aquarium with lid, took it back to my apartment and cooled the body temperature with some tepid water. I kept treating it with the antibiotics and it healed in a week or so. I started feeding it some small minnows and it eventually got to eating mice. After a few molts, you could barely even see that it had been wounded in the neck. At one point I took it back to the pet store with me after it healed and the supplier for the pet store was there and told me that I must have bought a different snake because there was no way that it could have been the same snake. lol It was very calm and easily handled. In fact, it would usually wrap itself around my wrist and I would wear it like a bracelet and carry it around with me. The snake was about 4 1/2 feet long. My guess is that it might have been someone's pet that had gotten out, but I had put announcements up at the university and the pet shop and nobody called or mentioned it to anyone at the pet store. It was a great pet while I had it. When I moved home after college my mom wouldn't let me keep it, she HATED snakes, so I ended up giving it to a friend who was a snake collector.

They spend most of their time in a hide, and once tamed they can be let out to roam supervised. Besides the space can be made larger by putting limbs for them to climb on, that is what they really like when not in hides. Most snakes don't like, or need HUGE enclosures. They live their lives in holes and protective spaces in the wild, they come out for three reasons, water, food, and breeding. When I raised chickens they would raid the nests of a night because the roosters would kill them, I would find them hiding under brush near the nest boxes. If you believe the larger is better than you would need a house to keep one of the large pythons. When I lived in Texas the large rattlesnakes liked living under wash machines, and dryers in the barracks.

Colubrids are the BEST! Had a black rat snake back in the late 1970s; she was 4 feet long and very black in color. My then-husband rescued her from a pet shop. I’m 100% sure she was wild caught, especially because we got her in Southern California where we lived. She was a problem at first to feed… everyone pretty much thought that live rodents was the only way to go back then. My husband and I had quite extensive knowledge of snakes and already had a SDiego gopher snake and a Cali king. We had the Cal king on pre-killed and decided to try Sly on the same, as she had quite a few of what appeared to be rodent bite scars. She took to pre-killed just fine 😊. We were also delighted to find out that she ate chicken eggs like a champ. Great snake all around. It never ceases to amaze and delight me to see how far reptiles-keeping has come. If it weren’t for my age (any snake I got would outlive me😮) and poor health I’d get a snake again. The last one I had was a corn snake in the early 2000s. I had to rehome him when I moved but he is still with his new family and going strong at 5 feet long and 20+ years of age.

In the St Louis area, these are some of the most common snakes you come across. I found on iNaturalist they recently split them into two species, one on the eastern side of the Mississippi river and one on the western, which means the ones I found in Illinois are a different species than the ones I've found in Missouri. My dad and I used to volunteer to rescue snakes from people's home through the humane society and the vast majority of them were black rat snakes. The biggest one we found was over 7 foot long! I've picked up quite a few of these guys and almost all of the bites I've taken from them was from one cantankerous baby ratsnake lol.

I didn't know much when I took mine in at the age of 16, and unfortunately made some mistakes. This snake still continued to thrive! I work regularly with black rat snakes, and I gotta say that they are one of my favourites to handle, but only the adults. The only snake bites I have received (unprovoked) were from the juveniles who still haven't quite learned that hands are not mice, despite the fact that all the snakes are tong-fed since hatching. If you get a black rat snake, I suggest keeping long hair tucked and tied away and not wear clothes with holes/many openings. They love to weave through strands and get themselves tangled in stuff.

Here’s a tip for snake owners!! If you don’t have a bioactive enclosure, and still want lots of flora, dollar stores have tons of fake plants! Vines, grasses, leafy plants, all for insanely cheap. Just make sure to sanitize it, and make sure none of them have flimsy parts that could come loose (I’ve only encounters one or two that look like they could come apart). Snake Discovery has some old videos about how to sanitize real leaves and branches too!

Eastern black rats are a big favorite. Astonishingly polite critters. Very easy to pick up: hold your hand out flat, palm-up, slowly slide under their head, and lift gently - basically pretend you're in a forklift precision competition. Their own inclination to climb does the rest.

I'd recommend the Hymenoptera for a phylogeny. Ants are wasps, and bees are vegetarian wasps. And they are all incredible animals, some even superorganisms, who aren't out to get you as much as you think.

We had a big black rat snake taking a nap in one of our bookshelves. My dad said itd probably been in the house for about a week, as our dog kept staring down random corners and furniture in the house. It was about six or seven feet, and completely chilled out. It didnt really seem to care when we picked it up to move it

I pulled a wild one out of one of the bushes at my old house a few years ago because my dog and cat Rambo were roaming around and I knew that if one of them noticed the snake they'd attack it (my cat Rambo literally fears nothing and has actually killed a few snakes and brought them to me as a gift, and I also happen to love snakes and all reptiles.) That said I found the tail first and very gently tapped on the bush looking for the head to move or pop out, I finally got her head to pop out towards the ground but Rambo had also taken notice and was trying to pounce, got my sister-in-law to take him inside and then I slowly and gently worked her out so as to not hurt her against the sturdy twigs. Needless to say she was a little bit on edge but I told her I'm not going to hurt you you're so pretty, I still had her by the tail and was able to get my left hand around her head and just held onto her and then she started calmly slithering around my arms and eventually around my entire upper torso and even around my head. Once she understood that I wasn't a threat she let me stretch her out and she was over 4 feet. I continued to interact with her for about an hour and then released her into the woods, she actually didn't want to go and I had to gently poke at her tail to get her to slowly slither off. A moment I'll never forget, that and raising my wild green snake, R.I.P Lime.

I actually always recommend corn snakes and rat snakes for first-time snake owners (who want a pet for thier kids). I like that their care isn't too intense and they normally eat well. This is only for people who don't really have an exact species they want. Honestly, any reptile can be a wonderful pet as long as there is thorough research. I always watch clints videos because you have fantastic info.

You have no idea how much I want a snake but they eat rodents and I've always owned some type of rodent. So I don't think I could handle feeding a pet something I would also keep as a pet.

Oh! Ive been keeping one of these for a friend who is moving for a few months as she cant keep it in her temporary apartment between homes. Hes a good boy even tho he does like to tail buzz at me. He eats great. Practically a garbage disposal. Hes been a pleasure to keep.

Well, this might've been the fastest I've clicked on one of these videos. A black rat snake is one of my top choices for a snake, if I ever get into a position where I'd feel comfortable keeping one. ...That being said, the black rat snake I was thinking of is the Eastern black rat snake (P. alleghaniensis), while the one that's the primary focus of this video is the Western black rat snake (P. obsoletus). The former is native to my area, something that appeals to me, and also happens to be the largest snake in my home state, so they have that going for them on top of being really pretty black snakes. Nevertheless, this video did a great job at making Westerns look pretty appealing, too. I was under the impression the Eastern Indigo Snake was not only the largest colubrid in North America but the largest snake in North America period, so hearing Western black rat snakes get longer was a surprise.
@ClintsReptiles

Indigos probably are longer, but that has never been officially verified. When it comes to what has been verified, this is your champion.

Hey Clint! I hear there is a black rat snake that is even bigger and tamer than our American black rat snakes. I'm talking about the Russian rat snake, Elaphe schrenckii. I hear they require brumation so maybe not for everyone but they sound like they would make outstanding pets. I hope you get around to them someday.😀

I'm in NC and we have lots of "black rat snakes" (Eastern Rat Snakes). They're pretty much the most common snakes I actually see. They're often pretty solidly black. I didn't realize actual "black rat snakes" had a lot more of a pattern going on. That's pretty neat. I think that the fox snakes are very neat looking though - probably the prettiest of those you showed today.

All the ones I have caught, except for corns, have been black. Surprisingly I have caught two wild corns over the years, but dozens of blacks. Was not able to catch the one garter I saw, he was too fast. Encountered a copperhead that bit my shoe but that was the only one I have ever seen. I have been told that the large black rat snakes will eat the copperheads.

I have a Black Rat Snake that I got from my local pet store. I always liked looking at the pets while waiting for my food for my other snake, and I saw he was SUPER interested in whatever was going on outside or passing his enclosure. A switch just sort of flipped in my head and I thought "I want him." Asked what he was, asked them to hold onto him for me while I go do research, and then came back a couple days later to buy him. They later told me that he was a wild rescue from a construction site. I moved away for a couple years and recently moved back, and the store employees still remember me for buying him, which I thought was neat. He's always been a cantankerous little bastard. Doesn't like being picked up or moved, but has become very comfortable with me just reaching into his enclosure and petting or booping him. Never had a tall enough enclosure for him until recently to add climbing stuff, but he LOVES burrowing in aspen. He's a quirky little guy with attitude, but I love him to death.

I've never seen them as pets, but they are my favorite snake to find in the wild. Even in the wild, they seem to sense when you're not a threat and take to handling well (which I do not recommend for wild animals, but sometimes they need to be relocated out of the chicken coop). Love you and your videos, Clint!

I'm old enough to remember when the Black Rat Snake was called Elaphe obsoleta. They make very good pets, and are excellent climbers. People who aren't aware of how they use the angled sides of their belly scutes for climbing are surprised at their ability to effortlessly ascend vertical surfaces like brick walls and rough tree trunks.

I volunteer at a wildlife center and get these guys in all the time - a couple of times for eating objects they thought were eggs (a stick shift handle and a golfball). They are so sweet and goofy. I absolutely love them and sometimes secretly wish they can't return to the wild so I can take them home with me. haha. We had one that loved those dog toy balls with the holes in them and constantly was wrapping it self in it. So much so it was in his official documentation. I felt a little bad he won't be able to enjoy it after he was released. 😅

One of my first times seeing a snake was a black rat snack at a skating rink. It was in the bushes outside and caused a commotion by slithering across the steps in front of everyone. It was easily at least 5 feet long. While everyone else freaked out my dad and I moved in for a closer look. My dad also used to find them under our porch and let me look at them before he released them in the field behind our house.
