First Time Hearing Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath with Ozzy Osbourne on vocals...Steph n Jay react to a classic metal track that sparked that metal revolution
Black Sabbath is the debut studio album by the English rock band Black Sabbath. Released on 13 February 1970 in the United Kingdom and on 1 June 1970 in the United States, the album reached number eight on the UK Albums Charts and number 23 on the Billboard charts. Black Sabbath is widely considered the first heavy metal album.[2] Additionally, the opening track of the album, "Black Sabbath", is widely considered to be the first doom metal song

Arguably still the heaviest riff ever written. The gloriously demonic 'tritone'. Before they wrote this song they just another bog-standard blues/jazz fusion band called Earth. But one day, across the road from where they were rehearsing, they saw a cinema advertising Mario Bava's classic horror anthology BLACK SABBATH. They noticed how many people were going to see it and someone said "Isn't it interesting that people will pay money to see a scary movie. What about if we started writing scary music?" And that set a whole direction for the band. 'Black Sabbath' was the second song they wrote, and an entire genre was born.

That was in the Summer of 1970. Now, you can't say that Sabbath is better than The Beatles because both bands have different music styles, but you cannot deny that both bands have definitely influenced hundreds of bands because both Sabbath and The Beatles were creators of a different kind and style of music. My ex wife did not like me playing Sabbath around the kids. Saying it was the devil music. I said you have it all wrong, they used Satan as a reference. They did not worship the devil. Listen to the song After Forever. The Demonic sound that Tony Iomi was playing was banned in the middle ages, for sounding like the devils music. In musical terms it is a Triton, or the devils interval.

Actually this one's lyrics were penned by Ozzy. During a July 2001 interview with Geezer Butler, Guitar World magazine explained that "having borrowed a 16th century tome of black magic from Osbourne one afternoon, Butler awoke that night to find a black shape staring balefully at him from the foot of his bed. After a few frightening moments, the figure slowly vanished into thin air." Geezer continued to describe how he "told Ozzy about it. It stuck in his mind, and when we started playing 'Black Sabbath', he just came out with those lyrics. It had to come out, and it eventually did in that song - and then there was only one possible name for the band, really!"
@Opheggie54

But the actual riff behind it was complete Tony Iommi. The lyrics came later
@RobBCactive

Geezer wrote almost all the lyrics, but Ozzy would create the vocal melody. You can also clearly hear bass on this, the guitar's heavy and tuned down, but a lot of the rumble is bass and it's shown too

@@zubrycky there had been a film out called "Black Sabbath" and horror was a popular film genre in the 60's. The version I have seen them describing, was that the intro words came out of jamming. Ozzy wasn't exactly a writer, so probably Geezer added to it, as he became the main lyricist

The Satan aspect was likely tied to the title of the song... "Black Sabbath" and the guy he was portraying as a vocalist is the victim they chose to sacrifice in that rite... That at least is how I always read it. It is basically a horror movie/story in music form. There was a guitarist, and a bassist, drummer, and Ozzy (Known as Jonathan Osbourne at the time). Toni Iommi the guitarist has a prosthetic on his fretting hand ring finger. You can see the bass player slapping the bass quite a few times... he was playing the picking hand with his fingers, and the guitarist was using a pick. This is actually the first song they wrote with this sound. That one riff kind of started what I consider Metal.

Iommi's boss at the time Iommi had his accident had no idea back then but when Iommi felt he was done for as a guitarist, his boss told him about Django Reinhardt and how his accident did not stop him. We owe Iommi's boss and Django Reinhardt a huge thank you for getting Iommi back on track to become the riff master.

I saw Black Sabbath in 1978 in Springfield, Illinois. Van Halen were the opening act on their first U.S. tour. I was 14 and my 16 year old friend drove there. The guitar notes you hear are a tri- tone that was associated with the devil. If you freeze the video you will see a left handed red guitar with 6 strings. Tony Iommi with a Gibson SG that had the electronics modified. The other guitar is a Fender bass played by Terrance "Geezer" Butler. It has 4strings and a natural finish. You can see him plucking it with his fingers. His hair is also lighter in color than Tony's. You guys are a sweet couple and if the song scares you, you have each other to hold. I play electric guitar, bass and drums, and Black Sabbath are a big inspiration. I started playing in 1970. I'm sure my answers were already addressed in the comments but I did not read them yet. Try to listen to " Lady Evil" also by Black Sabbath, but with the second vocalist Ronnie James Dio. He was a better singer than Ozzy. Ozzy is great also. RIP Ronnie. Going to subscribe now.

Guitarist's (Tony Iommi) Ring finger the tip is a prosthetic he made himself. Still plays guitar as bad ass as he did. He cut the tip of that finger off before they made any of their music. Great guitarist and it is interesting he is wearing a prosthetic he made himself.

It incredible that so many people are hearing the early sounds of Sabbath for the first time. The collective menace,the literal explanation of the subject. And Ozwald Osborne. They deliver.

First of all, I absolutely love you two. Secondly, This album is so flawless! The best set of songs on it are Wasp/Behind the Wall of Sleep/Basically/and NIB. They all kinda form one giant masterpiece, much like this album. Mannn I love it. And you both have very good taste in music. Keep on keepin on

This song is so heavy and dark and scary and awsome. Nobody did it better, or ever will do it better than Sabbath. I love this album cover, its got that creepy, scary, gothic, Blair Witch type of feel to it, which is perfect for this song and album.

In case, You are wondering. Band got its name from a (I believe in 1966) movie called Black Sabbath. Did you notice on Tony Iommi's hand that one of his fingers is shorter? I think it's his pinky finger. Tony had an accident in a manufacturing facility in England before Black Sabbath started. He thought that accident would hinder his playing his guitar, but we all know that he can......

This is an Anti-Satanic song. Warning Satan will fill all your worldly greed, desire and pride and when he comes to collect you will be screaming for God to save your ass. So maybe just don't sell your soul.
