Love everything about the Dio era Sabbath!! Dio was only 5'4'' but had the voice of a giant. RIP Ronnie

Beautiful Ronnie the Pavorotti of metal. Only 5ft4 and a powerhouse of a singer. Genteel and humble he was and he loved his fans and we loved him even more. He is so missed. Ty for reacting to this song. Everyone reacts to Heaven and Hell and so many other Dio/Sabbath and this gem is often missed. Its one of my favorites along with Man on the Silver Mountain! Rip Beautiful Ronnie!

Absolutely brilliant!! Guitarist is Toni Iommi. He’s been there from day #1 over 50yrrs ago. He put metal on the map and has written more killer riffs than anybody alive or dead in my opinion. When Sabbath announced they were going to have RJD replace Ozzy a lot of us fans didn’t know what to expect. They kicked us in the teeth with 3 incredible albums, The Mob Rules, Heaven and Hell, and Live Evil. Ozzy had Randy Rhoades and Sabbath had Dio. All was right in the metal world and it”s a time period I’ll always remember and cherish.

Their musicianship got better because they had an actual musician at vocals who could also write! Ozzy couldn't sing against the riff, because he isn't a vixalust, he's a frontman', no disrespect, but Dio and him are not in the same category. Toni Iommi talk about this in interviews. Anyway, at this pint, only the singers changed.

Also Dio with Rainbow era, you must listen and see the live version of ”Mistreated” from Munich 1977. It’s totally insane. Dio in one of his very best and most breathtaking moments! You won’t regret it!

A few recommendations for Dio Sabbath are "Lonely is the Word," "Voodoo" "Shadow of the Wind" "Lonely is the Word" features Tony Iommi's guitar playing, "Voodoo" is a hard and heavy banger and "Shadow of the Wind" is a lesser known moody take on heroin addiction with a classic Iommi riff. A couple of other singers for Sabbath are Ian Gillian and Tony martin. For some insane vocals (insane asylum crazy) check out Ian Gillian singing "Disturbing the Priest" Some Tony Martin Sabbath to check out "Nightwing" "Eternal Idol" "Sabbath Stones"

Lonely is the Word is 🔥 Iommi's guitar kicks ass, but I've always thought his guitar playing in that sounds so much like Alex Lifeson from Rush. I wonder if that was intentional or what. Can you hear the similarity?

Someone briefly mentioned this but Tony Iommi lost 1/3 of his right middle & ring fingers in an industrial accident before Black Sabbath hit it big……Story goes that he melted down plastic bottle caps (this is early/mid 60’s) & shaped them for his fingers & bound them w/leather to fingers & strung his guitar with the lightest strings available….Legend !

In 1980 when Ozzy was kicked out of Sabbath, the only change that was made was Dio coming in. However, in 1981 the Drummer Bill Ward left the band and Vinny Apice replaced him. Dio stayed until the end of their tour in 1982 and recorded the live album ''Live Evil''. He left and Ian Gillan (from Deep purple) joined Sabbath for 1 album (born again). Please react to more songs from Heaven and Hell, and also from the Mob rules album...both are excellent albums.

Today there are so many genres of heavy metal, it would take too long to explain...But I can give you some basics: Classic hard rock - That originated from the British 'big 3' or the 'Unholy Trinity' of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple. In the 70's, u had hard rock bands like Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, Kiss, Rush, Blue Oyster Cult, Thin Lizzy, Van Halen, etc. But the first band to embrace the term 'heavy metal' was Judas Priest. Motorhead in the late 70's/ early 80's amped up the speed in hard rock. Scorpions, AC/DC, Def Leppard, Whitesnake ... also fit w/ the hard rock tag. Classic heavy metal - With Judas Priest leading the pack, the classic heavy metal bands of the 80's emerged... bands like Iron Maiden, Saxon, Armored Saint, Queensryche, Dio, etc. Faster, more technical and theatrical than the 70's bands before them. Thrash metal (or Speed metal) - After Motorhead pushed the speed boundaries of rock, metal bands like Venom and Mercyful Fate emerged to raise the shock factor... Bands began to play louder, faster and more frenetic in style... Metallica, Anthrax, Exodus, Kreator, Death, Sodom, Testament, Slayer, Megadeth, Voivod, etc. Power metal - Inspired by themes of battle fantasy, swords & sorcery... Power metal took the high vocals of Judas Priest and Mercyful Fate, the thrash metal guitars of Metallica and Slayer, and the melodic delivery of 70's hard rock bands... and often added keyboards. These bands would include: Manowar, Helloween, Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian, Kamelot, Savatage, etc. Hair metal or glam metal - The 80's produced bands that relied on big hair, makeup, an outrageous image & attitude... mixed with heavy music that had hooks and melody. They were inspired by 70's 'glam rock' bands like New York Dolls, Slade, The Sweet... These bands included: Motley Crue, Poison, Ratt, Bon Jovi, Great White, Kix, Twisted Sister, etc. Death metal - Evolved from thrash metal, this genre was more underground... drawing only hardcore fans. Less melody, more brutal, gutteral vocals & lyrics, more frenetic & technical guitars & drumming. Bands include: Obituary, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Suffocation, etc. Black metal - Inspired by satanic themes by Venom & Celtic Frost in the 80's, this genre was less technical than death metal... lyrics heavily inspired by satanism & the occult... Black metal can also be played w/ keyboards and strings. It can also be raw & brutal... the vocals & guitars are more 'icy' than death metal's more 'chunky' sound. Grunge rock/ Post-grunge rock - In the 90's, u had bands that played heavy rock without the 80's production values or lead guitar skills... this created a raw, basic rock that was more based on emotions, depth and frustrations, rather than the flair, showmanship & theatricality of 80's bands. Grunge bands included: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Candlebox, Alice In Chains, Bush, Soundgarden, etc. However, after the 90's, a new crop of bands took that 'grunge' sound and polished it a bit...so that was more 'modern' sounding (hence, dubbed 'Post-grunge') . Those bands included: Creed, Nickleback, Saliva, Papa Roach, Theory of a Deadman, Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, Seether, etc. Industrial rock - Combining electronic beats and samples, this genre could be music u could dance & rave to... or it could be even more abrasive than grunge rock. Bands included: Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Filter, Godflesh, Static-X, American Head Charge, etc. Rap rock - Heavy rock w/ a rapper or MC and a DJ/ sampler... Bands include: Limp Bizkit, Rage Against the Machine, Stuck Mojo, Linkin Park, Hed(PE), 311, etc. Symphonic rock/ metal - Combining massive use of keyboards (orchestras on records) to create atmospheric classical soundtracks w/ guitars, symphonic metal relies on fantasy fiction themes... Bands include: Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica, Tobias Sammet's Avantasia, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, etc. Progressive 'prog' rock/ metal - Inspired by complicated musical arrangements from past artists like King Crimson, Genesis, Rush, etc. Prog bands are often diverse in their delivery, from theatrical to dark fantasy. Bands include: Tool, Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation, Evergrey, Fates Warning, Opeth, Mastodon, etc. Sludge rock/ Doom metal - When thrash metal sped up the pace of the music, another set of bands slowed it down to the tempos of Black Sabbath to sound heavy & ominous. Bands include: Down, Crowbar, Type O Negative, Paradise Lost, Katatonia, etc.

Only the vocalists changed. But Ozzy didn't offer much when it came to writing, Ronnie was a brilliant lyricist and a true MUSICIAN, Ozzy was nothing more than a front man who was good childhood friends with 3 musicians and started a band. After Ronnie joined the band, he shared writing with Geezer Butler, the bassist.

The Dio-era Black Sabbath decided to reunite in 2006 under a new banner - *Heaven & Hell* until Ronnie James Dio's death in 2010. It was not because of any lawsuit. See, after Ozzy was fired in 1979, Ronnie James Dio took the job in 1980 for the album 'Heaven & hell' ... original drummer Bill Ward quit cos he hated playing Sabbath w/ Dio on vocals... Vinny Appice (drums) joined Sabbath (he appeared in this music video) and played on the 1981 album 'Mob rules'... but then both Ronnie Dio and Vinny Appice quit Black Sabbath in 1982 (went on to form Dio in 1983) after the release of a live album 'Live evil'... Black Sabbath did 1 album w/ singer Ian Gillan in 1983 (the album 'Born again'). In 1986, Tony Iommi (guitar) re-formed Black Sabbath w/ all-new members, but the later versions of Sabbath were not successful, despite putting out great records... In 1992, Black Sabbath reformed w/ Iommi, Geezer Butler (bass), Ronnie Dio (vocals) and Vinny Appice (drums) and released the 'Dehumanizer' album. But in 1993, Ronnie Dio quit again after Black Sabbath signed on to open for Ozzy Osbourne (Rob Halford of Judas Priest did the vocals for Sabbath on those shows) but the original Black Sabbath did not reunite in 1994. The original Black Sabbath finally reunited to tour in 1997... first w/ Ozzy, Iommi and Butler... then Bill Ward (drums) came on board. They re-established Black Sabbath as the original band - Ozzy, Iommi, Geezer & Ward. However, Tony Iommi wanted to record a new album, and he approached Ronnie James Dio about working together again, so they decided to reunite under a new banner, Heaven & Hell. They would ONLY play Dio-era Sabbath songs in concert... they recorded 1 album in 2008 - 'The devil you know' (Which turned out to be Ronnie James Dio's final studio record). In 2012, Ozzy and Black Sabbath began working on a new album, but Bill Ward (drums) opted not to participate... Brad Wilk of Rage Against the Machine played drums on the record... The album '13' was released in 2013, and would be the last Black Sabbath studio album. Black Sabbath toured until 2017 (?) w/ Ozzy, Iommi and Butler... drums were played by Ozzy's drummer Tommy Clufetos, Adam Wakeman played keyboards & rhythm guitar on tour.
