For your collection, MUST HAVE Stones albums are: Beggars Banquet, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main Street and the live album - Get Yer Ya Yas Out. I would also include Goats Head Soup, It’s Only Rock and Roll and Some Girls. That list could keep me happy for years (and it has!).
@paulprendergast3184

Agree with your list but for Some Girls which IMHO is overrated and lacking in comparison to these others
@Gordy63
@Gordy63 18 дней назад
@@paulprendergast3184 I know, totally out of character amongst the other albums mentioned. It took me quite a while to warm up to it (Stones are my favorite band and the Mick Taylor era is by a wide margin their best output), but it is highly acclaimed and does have some great songs on it, IMO.

I highly recommend Moonlight Mile which finishes off Sticky Fingers. For those who love the Stones, this is an absolute classic. Very different pace to this song though. By the way you have wonderful taste in music. Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street are two of the greatest albums in the history of rock music. In some ways I don't think Sticky Fingers in particular gets its due.

Written by Mick and Keith. This was before Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and the others died of heroin and other drug misadventures. Fellow bandmate Brian Jones had died a year earlier, but he was considered to be somewhat more reckless and fell into a pool, unable to fight his way out.
@davescurry69

Hendrix and Joplin both died before this song.
@debjorgo
@debjorgo 17 дней назад
@@davescurry69 The song was recorded in April 1970. It was maybe written much sooner. Jimi died Sep 8, 1970. Janis died Oct 4, 1970. True it wasn't released until a year later, April 1971. It was already recorded, it was a great track, it did not glorify Heroin use. In fact, I think the line was supposed to show, that contrary to the front he is putting up, he is really in bad shape over the relationship.
@davescurry69
@davescurry69 17 дней назад
@debjorgo I agree. I've never thought it glorified heroin use either. Thanks for the recording info. It's been a favourite Stones track of mine for decades. The tour rehearsal version on the deluxe album release a few years back is also fantastic. Taylor's guitar playing in particular is a highlight.

According to Keith Richards, he was hanging out with Gram Parsons, who was teaching him about country music, and Parsons’ wife sent him flowers by florist service in America. It took 10 days or so for the flowers to cross the Atlantic Ocean, and when they were finally delivered they were dead. Keith and Gram thought it was hilarious and wrote a song about it

Some friends of mine back in the nineties named their Rolling Stones cover band "Dead Flowers" after this song, which, by the way, is another Jagger-Richards composition. Emmett Tinley recorded a cover version a decade back with an Irish band named The Prayer Boat, from what I gathered poking around the google a bit. Dido is pronounced Dy-doh, as in die or eye. In ancient Greek and Roman legends she was the queen of Tyre who escaped tyranny to found the city of Carthage in North Africa (Tunisia). Hannibal was the general from Carthage who took the fight to Rome when he crossed the Alps with war elephants to attack from the North. He gave the Romans a beat down at the Battle of Cannae in 216 BC, but he ultimately lost the war.

Biz, you should watch the live version from The Marquee Club in 1971. Mick Taylor's guitar work is amazing. Not to mention it's one of the best examples of Keith, Bill and Charlie being in the "wobbly pocket" with the rhythm

This song is about the band members being treated like peasants with money by the old money class. Dead flowers is smack or a metaphor for comfort and support, leaving roses on your grave is a metaphor for saying you're eternally grateful for easing my pain with comfort and support. Little Susie might be a shout out to the great song writing team the Boudleaux couple who wrote Wake Up Little Susie.

There's two separate songs called Dead Flowers. This one is by the Stones. Not only did Jagger slash Richards write it, it's probably about the breakup of Mick and girlfriend Marianne Faithful. The weird kinda four way relationship those two had with Keith/Anita Pallenberg provided a while lotta song fodder. Probably a lot of the drama of that is in here.
