Black Sabbath Fans.....FEELIN' YOU!!! Making their debut on the channel to-NIGHT, we have Black Sabbath with a live performance of their song entitled "War Pigs". FULL DISCLOSURE: I have heard this song before, many many many many times....too many to count. I've heard covers of it, and I've even played it a few times. However this is a live performance. Therefore I will NOT be scoring, evaluating, reviewing, or reacting to the song itself in any way. I will ONLY be scoring, evaluating, reviewing, and reacting to the LIVE PERFORMANCE.

I might be wrong but the way I remember it, this was after the Paranoid album was recorded (the concerts features most songs from it), but the song went through numerous iterations live - when it was first written it was totally about "witches at black masses"... and many lines were switched around quite a bit. So Ozzy here is singing a mixture of early versions and improvisations like he always did up to that point combined with parts from the studio version. Afaik Geezer Butler did write the lyrics we know - so they didn't come naturally to Ozzy...

The original was called Walpurgis with totally different lyrics. And yup Ozzy is singing a mixture of Walpurgis, War Pigs, and well...nonsense. lol

These are the lyrics to Warpurgis, which became War Pigs. It was also going to be the title track of the album Paranoid, but WB Records made them change it.

Your comments on Geezer are especially meaningful, when you take into account that he never played bass prior to the formation of Sabbath. He was a rhythm guitar player, but they needed a bass player so he made the switch. He self admittedly said he sucked,but credits Bill and Tony for being patient and working with him. It’s apparent how quickly he seems to have progressed, pretty amazing!

Love this performance as I have seen it before and really like the different lyrics. Bill Ward is literally killing that drum kit, my only complaint is we don't see enough of Geezer. You had me on the floor with your comments about Ozzy hanging on for his life and the story about the singer in your band. Great stuff, David!!

Yo, Big Dave. I saw them NewYears Eve 1999 in Phoenix. I was working at was then Bank One Ballpark. So I got paid to see them, along with Megadeth, Pantera and a few others. What a night. Sabbath was incredible. Old Black Sabbath were smokin'! Like electric funeral pyre!! 🤣🤣 HARRUMPH!!! 🤘😎🤘

What is remarkable to me is that all four original members are still with us when so many of their contemporaries have losses many of their original members. Same thing with KISS & Aerosmith. Even though the originals no longer perform together.

Whatever the reason for the lyrics change it didn’t effect the end version it’s a bloody classic. Live in Birmingham last tour version is nuts the crowd sing loads. I do like this early version though very raw

You can actually listen to the "Basement Tape" of this song on Ozzy's Ozman Cometh greaest hits album. recorded before the studio recording and the lyrics are very different, same with the song Black Sabbath which also appears on that greatest hits album. Even then it is different lyrics to what he is singing here as well lol. I do recall reading somewhere that the label wanted them to change the lyrics because the original was "too dark"

Another band from my youth! I saw Black Sabbath in 1978, Van Halen wars the warm up band. Ozzie was so messed up that night he could barely sing. Van Halen actually put on the better show on that particular eve. Great Review, as usual..!

Early Black Sabbath was so far ahead of every other metal band. So influential. You know another band that was super influential but never gets any street cred? Alice Cooper. They were banging around LA in the late 60s and Zappa produced their first album in 1969. You can't tell me that KISS, David Bowie, etc. weren't influenced by Alice Cooper. They were the first band that fused hard rock, glam rock, and over-the-top stage theatrics. Very influential but never talked about.

I saw Ozzy live in early 1989. We were hoping he would perform "Paranoid", even though he was Ozzy Osbourne band now... and he did, as well as Warpigs. They really put up a good show. You don't see a legend like him every day.

Saw them on the reunion tour as a teenager so that was big. Can't say I listen to them now as I know their songs so well but they were a big part of my adolescence. The lyrics are indeed different and I don't know what he's singing either.

That's a mix between the original lyrics, Walpurgis and the final version that made the album. It's said Walpurgis lyrics were from a satanic ritual.

Regarding lyrics: Black Sabbath had played early versions a lot, mostly in the beginning of their tours, even in '69. Some that I recall: they had like 8 different War Pigs versions, at least 1 different N.I.B. version (totally different from the studio version), Hand of Doom (has also 2 or 3 different versions performed live), Paranoid, Iron Man, Snowblind, Killing Yourself To Live (major difference from the studio version too), Behind The Wall Of Sleep, Fairies Wear Boots, Sweet Leaf, The Wizard (aka Devil's Island, the first version), Into The Void (can't make out what Ozzy really sings as the quality is too harsh), Black Sabbath (self-titled song, has one additional final verse), Children of the Grave, Symptom of the Universe. And those are just what I remembered, how much had been not recorded or aren't in public circulation?

Geezer's a legend! But, all-in-all, their best tune is, "Dirty Women"! Without Ozzy, "Heaven and Hell"! That's Tony's best solo...but he doesn't reproduce the studio version of it live, ever, that I've seen...Not being one, myself, I imagine a musician remembers a song until he knows it, and then he doesn't have to remember it anymore...?

A live version of ‘Here I Go Again’ by whitesnake came on my Pandora. All lyrics were the same EXCEPT he said “like a hobo I was born to walk alone” THAT threw the entire song off for me. Drifter sounds so much better than hobo. It was awful.

There's two approaches to musical performance: note-for-note, the same every time; and, "I AM the music!", and by God I'm feeling it a little differently right now! I mean, it's understandable that a Michael Schenker wouldn't even attempt to repeat a solo note-for-note! But, I've heard that drummers, somehow, manage it, deliberately!...Which seems quite impossible to me! I can't even keep track of what they're doing...

I was watching Johnny Carson one night when Robert Goulet got up to sing, and soon blanked out completely on the lyrics. He started over and blanked again. Very sad...I don't think he ever sang again. Performing lyrics, repeatedly, for decades, I think, does something to singers' brains...it's almost like memories get "worn out" from being recalled TOO often, when, usually, you'd expect repetition to strengthen a memory. Maybe, the musical component just gets to overwhelming the verbal part--after all, what's more important, the music, or the words! Songs are the only way I can tolerate POETRY! hahaha...
