Love the beers Black Sheep brewery make, the Best at 3.8% has so much flavour. The Black sheep ale was originally called special’ and they call it that on cask. One of my favourites. I think it’s slightly unfair to compare it to Bishops finger, as the ABV strength will influence the flavour. Compare it with Spitfire maybe, both very good beers though. Nice to see best bitters being praised rather than all the over hopped citra IPAs that everyone raves about.

I agree that Spitfire is a better choice for comparison

Whats Spitfire these days...4%....wasn't it 4.5....lets carry on with this British obsession with lowering the ABV n ruining our beers in the hope that coz its cheaper due to the lower alcohol it will sell more...dream on!...When they start that debacle I just move on to soemthin else....bunch of tossers thinkin we are brand loyal when u keep screwing up beers...get real...a lot of the taste is down to the alcohol in the bloody beer ffs.

Simon The extra flavour of the Bishops Finger was due to where the Finger of the Bishop was prior to Brewing !

Both excellent beers and brewers bought a bishops finger 1.60 in sainsburys today absolute banger of a bargain given current cost of everything

Bishop's finger is a bit of a Lidl aisle _go to_ for me when the nights draw in. Good, solid & dependable British beer that the marketing boffins don't feel the need to make a song & dance about. Cheers Si! 🍺

Black sheep brewery came from the Theakstons brewery, Paul Theakston split of and opened his own brewery, he was the Black Sheep of the family, both breweries are in, pronounced Mas ham in North Yorkshire. visited there years ago!

Bishops finger is ok from a bottle, but on cask in a pub it is a really good beer

Ale and bottles/tins aren't compatible at all. Ales are cask beers they taste horrible with CO2. Hissing and fizzing, pushing the flavours around the inside of the mouth isn't right for these beers.

Both comments I agree with ha. Cask when good is the best but too often the Wednesday pint can be like vinegar. Tim taylors and fuller esb and proper job the top three ale by bottle in my opinion.

Thanks for this review Simon and the kind words for Faversham. As an ex tour guide for Shep's, Bishops Finger was always popular with our visitors. Hopefully you'll be back and welcomed to our lovely market town again.

Bishops Finger used to be 5.4, and I think it was far superior to its current incarnation. The Black Sheep is delicious and definitely a session drink. It goes surprisingly well with food, especially currys.

I contacted Shepherd Neame to ask them why they had ruined Bishops Finger and Spitfire by reducing the ABV and pumping them full of Glucose syrup, their reply We haven't changed the recipe and we've reduced the Abv to reflect our customers health conscious drinking habits - What a load of cobblers !

Love your channel which I discovered just a few weeks ago. I live down south but born in Yorkshire so I suppose I should point out to you that it’s not “Masham” where the brewery is based - it should be pronounced like it has a Z in the name - so phonetically just a Little bit like “Mazam” or perhaps easier to think of it as having a silent “h”. Keep up the great work and beer reviews. I’m an ex CAMRA member by the way. Favourite tipple was always Gales HSB before they got bought out; and for that winter/ very dark strong taste maybe Gales Prize Old Ale or Thomas Hardy’s Ale - both working bottled beers with sentiment in the bottle. Or perhaps Westmalle Tripel - one of those Trappist Monk beers from Belgium (also bottle conditioned). Oh and I also meant to add I think (from memory) the owner of Black sheep Brewery was one of the main Brewery team members of Theakstons
@pauljones5066

2 excellent beers, both favourites of mine p.s. they pronounce Masham "Mas" "Ham" (no "shh..." sound). The Theakstones brewery is also there. The Blacksheep brewery has excellent shop, bar and visitor's centre.

Black sheep brewery is right next door to theakstons brewery. It's not in the middle of nowhere they are practically in the centre of Masham but yet Masham itself is difficult to get to haha. Plenty of good pubs as well 👍

When of draught back in the eighties, it was usually known as "Nun's delight"! Bet you can't guess which one? One of the better Shepherd Neame beers, even though this is yet another weakened one as others have noticed. Same with the Black Sheep offering, they used to brew one called "Emmerdale" which was a bit stronger again but I don't think they do it anymore? There just seems to be a big gap in the strength up to "Riggwelter" at 5.7% or 5.9%? Depending upon whether it's bottled or draught?

Bishops Finger used to be my go to beer for many, many years when it was 5.4 ABV in the clear glass bottles with the purple bottle tops. Now Shepherd Neame have completely ruined it by changing the recipe, changing the bottles to opaque brown with gold tops, changing the ABV to 5.2 and by jacking up the price by 20%+. What a completely disgusting and cynical manoeuvre. I could forgive them for being Tories, because that tends to go with the territory for major brewering companies, but I will never forgive them for ruining my long time favourite beer and I will not buy it ever again.
