In our Connecticut garden, black spot is a common disease on rose bushes. I am sharing with you how I do the prevention/sanitation. I also address biological and chemical control of this pesky disease.

She is correct about prevention and the work involved to have healthy roses. It is for this reason that I have gotten rid of all but two of my knock outs. Shrub roses work best for me right now.

Thank you. I also love David Austin roses, however I lost 6 of them during a move. I had to put them in a container during winter prior to closing on home in a different location. Someday, I hope to replace them.

I don't have a lot of powdery mildew, but sawfly damage, I control them with insecticidal soap. Thanks!

I grow antique roses {currently 1838 and earlier) to fit with my 300 year old home. It seems that any of the roses that are yellow (or crossed with yellow) are easily damaged by black spot... (Harison's Yellow, Persian Yellow, Austrian copper) ;also white (Bath White), but red roses (Old Velvet, Apothecary, Rosa Mundi, Pompon de Bourgogne) seem rather resistant to black spot. I have moved to stronger chemical sprays in that holistic treatments fail and my yellow roses badly defoliate. One must be careful in that spraying too often or using too much chemicals also damages roses ~ the leaves curl, darken and become brittle. Some current rose literature points out that "black spot" is becoming resistant to many chemical and natural treatments that worked only a few years ago, but not any more. I find that the BioAdvancecd product shown here no longer is as affective as it once was on my yellow roses. 😌

At this point I decided to be tolerant of black spot, as long as it doesn't defoliate my roses all together. What can you do... I don't want to use heavy stuff on them and turn my rose love into horror maintenance. All yellow roses are genetically predisposed to black spot, unfortunately. Happy gardening! I bet those old roses look lovely with your old home!

That is Lady of Shalott at the end of her blooms. In my climate she starts blooming as a very orange rose and end up deep pink to pale pink.

Okay, you convinced me. I am going to buy more Austin roses. I have a few already, some are doing well like Teasing Georgia, Golden Celebration and Darcy Bussell and some not so well like Tranquillity( a lot of black spots) and utter failure like Harlow Carr and the climber Crown Princess Margareta I'm in zone 9A with very hot and humid in the summer and mid winters. I like your info about treating black spots which I will implement this fall and spring and so on. I was thinking of getting four Olivia Rose Austin tree roses for this spring, maybe another English Climber to replace Princess Margareta or the climber "America". I'm looking at your Lady of Shalott and it's very tempting. Please do a video about that rose. Thanks Olga.

Hi Jeff, my LotS is not the best to stand up to black spot. I should show her at this stage for everyone to see her bare limbs. But you know what, every year, she comes to life during spring, no matter of what! Oh, Olivia Rose is ssoooo disease resistant! I can imagine it as a standard! I am almost tempted to buy her as a standard my self, but we have cold winters and to overwinter her would be a monumental operation! Lucky you, zone 9, you can grow standards no problem!

@@OlgaCarmody Thanks for your reply Olga. I feel I have a better handle on the black spot situation after watching your video. It makes sense to break the life cycle and and use preventive method to control it. I do have another question to ask you Have you heard of Rose Replant Disease!! or more precisely have you experience it. It is planting a new Rose plant where the Old one was removed. I just ordered two climbing "Lady of Shallot" to replace the Princess Magaretta (they are 7 years old) this spring. They will be removed in January and planted with the Lady of Shallot when they arrived in spring next year. I planning to dig the holes about 18 inches deep and wide and replaced all the soil with new soil mixed with compost and rotted manure. As if we don't have enough issues already. What do you think about what I'm planning to do

its too informative, thanks Ogal. I am living in a very hot area where temperature goes to 50 in May, June, July and August month. Would you mind to guide me how can I grow healthy roses. Every year more than 100 rose plant die in my garden and I am purchasing new plants from nursery

Oh, roses in hot climates. Generally roses don't do well in very hot climates. Folks try to grow them in pots and shady areas. Maybe your battle is futile? Sorry to say that. And in summer roses go into dormancy because of high temperatures...Try pots if you are not doing it already, don't mistake dormancy for dying in summer, stay on top of watering, invest into good, water retentive soil in pots. Fertilize with organic fertilizers...

I am very new with roses. It's my first year. And one of my DA roses had so many of black spots that I scared that other ones next to it will get it, that i chop all stems, leaving maybe 20 cm from ground. I hope so it will regrow next spring.. Thank you Olga, for sharing.

Hi Agne, your rose will regrow. Some DA roses are better with black spot than others. Just make sure that all the leaves are out in the garbage and start your black spot treatment early next year.

I heard about this fungi, but don't have deep knowledge of it. Black spot is tricky, especially when you have very humid conditions. Some folks who really want DA roses and want to grow them in black spot "territory", they resign to systemic fungicides, unfortunately. The other option is not to grow susseptible roses at all, some of my fellow rosarians says that they just tolerate it. Not sure where you stand on this vast scale of opinions.

I have 10 rose bushes. All established and healthy. Earlier this year I ordered Roald Dahl from David Austin which is advertised as best for health and flowering. They sent the wrong bush. As you know, you can't tell until it blooms. We think it may be Princess Alexandra of Kent. Anyhow, this rose has black spot. It is the first time that I've seen it in my garden. None of the other roses have it. About one third of the leaves have dropped. I have cleaned everything away under the bush. I'm in zone 6a. This summer has been very rainy, but not too hot or humid. .. My garden is clean and the fertilizers/amendments I use are all organic. No sprays. Drip system. I'm going to try and save this rose, but in the end it may end up in the fire pit. I'm loathe to use anything like BioAdvance that would hurt pollinators. If I go that route, I will remove all buds from that rose until the plant can maintain good health. I'm really upset that she is such an unhealthy cultivar. David Austin company said that they would send Roald Dahl next spring since they sent the wrong rose last spring. I'm not sure I want it. I may tell them to keep it.

I know, the saga of black spot! I have it in my garden. We live on the east coast and humidity here is just too much for roses. Where do you live that all your 10 roses are well established and don't have black spot problem? West coast? Roald Dahl I have and it is not healthy, it doesn't receive a lot of sun and suffers tremendously in the front of my house. Do you mind sharing the name of your roses?

@@OlgaCarmody Hi Olga. I live in the Midwest. I'm sorry, I don't have a record of the names of my roses. I do know they are not landscape roses. 3 roses were here when I bought this house over 40 years ago. The others I picked up at garden centers, while traveling, got from other gardeners, and one at an Amish flea market, They are all strong caned and beautiful bloomers. They are up early in spring before anything else, provide an amazing show, and I live for the scents in the air. I bought Roald Dahl to replace a hibiscus that I moved to another spot last year. It was between Lady of Shallot and Roald Dahl because I wanted the peach/apricot color. I thought Lady of Shallot would be too large, so I settled on Roald Dahl. As you know, the wrong rose was received. I thought that I was going to get an amazing rose. This is so disappointing. I've never had a problem with fungus/disease on any of my plants, not even mildew on Zinnia. I take that back, I did once have blossom end rot on a tomato plant, but that was due to a nutrient deficiency, that I was able to easily correct. The David Austin rose that I received gets at least as much sun as my other roses, yet it is the only one with disease. I have to seriously think about whether I want David Austin company to send me the Roald Dahl especially after hearing that yours is suffering. I'll need to ask them if they will refund my money if I decline the Roald Dahl. I suppose I could send them pictures of the plant they sent and my other roses. As an aside, my neighbor when I was young was a rose grower. All she grew were roses. She must of had 50 to 60 rose bushes of all kinds and colors. She taught me how to care for them, overwinter them, and how to feed them. Her home was about three miles from here and she did not deal with fungus/disease either. I enjoy watching your show. You are a more "down to earth" gardener like myself. Thank you for letting all of us enjoy your beautiful garden.
