Two of the most prevalent problems in growing roses are harmful insects and black spot fungus, and unfortunately, two of my David Austin roses have come down with both. Join me as I show you exactly what black spot and spider mites are and how to treat them. Prevention is always the best weapon, but sometimes life happens and we aren't always able to stop these common rose ailments.

Thank you so much for sharing this. After watching Laura (GA) I really wanted to try my hand at growing roses but living in 7b (west tn) I was reluctant to try. Seeing you have success AND more importantly problems and how to deal with them, has inspired me to maybe try them next season. Also, I saw your instagram story and wanted you to know that I found you through GA and yes we all love Laura. I know that you are confident in who God created you to be but I also wanted to give you some encouragement and let you know how much your subscribers love YOU!!! You understand the issues we southern gardeners deal with and are a great resource when it comes to plants we can have success with. I also love your sense of humor! Anyway, you are sweet, precious, intelligent and we love you for being you!

I love how you are honest about the upkeep of many rose varieties. They are lots of work at times between fungi and pests and dropping leaves when they get dry. I ripped out all the ones that require lots of care. I only grow Miracle on Hudson (my favorite), Top Gun, Home Run, and Knock Out roses. They are more less maintenance free for the lazy gardeners. 😅😆

Thank you. Thank you. This is exactly the information I need. In 7b and have a couple of David Austin roses with some stubborn black spot. Have been using the 3 in 1 granular recommended (even more frequently than instructed) but hasn't completely controlled the blackspot. Going to get the spray you have used in the video. Also, have my David Austin climbing rose on order to arrive next month, my obelisk is ready. Thank you for instructing how you will prune the rose growth. Was unsure, once the plant has enough growth, how much to prune since it's tied to the support. Great, informative video.

7b Huntersville here, Black spot is so common with any brand roses here in the South! Definitely worth the high maintenance though. Home grown roses are so much better than store bought! I’ve gotten all of my roses from Jackson & Perkins’s in SC (my Mom & Grandmother had many). The best smelling & size bloom hybrid tea roses from them are the, Peace Rose and the Dolly Parton Rose. I’m definitely looking into David Austin roses this coming spring for my garden so I love that you have them and I was able to watch updates from you on them! 🌹

Roses are very difficult to have in the landscape. They are a labor of love and require the most maintenance in my yard. The Japanese beetles they attract is awful and the unsightly yellow leaves from black spot drives me insane. But, when they bloom in their full glory they are amazing. Almost makes it worth it. Love your videos and your honest approach.

Thank you for the good tips for taking care of spider mites and black spot. It is very important to rid the dead foliage from the beds. I don't plant roses because of the amount of care they require. I was tempted this year but glad I didn't. In Delaware this year we have had dreadful growing conditions this year. We vacillate between drought and very high humidity. It has really stretched my gardening skills. . I have had to deal with aphids, sooty mold, black spot, and Lantern fly, I am at the gardening stage where I want to plant and forget and looking for things with minimum care requirements.

I've had great results using Bayer Rose and Flower Care when needed but like you stated prevention is the key. I try to get out there at the very beginning of the year and treat all my roses with dormancy oil in hopes of smothering out insects and fungal spores. But to be honest I stopped purchasing DA roses because I find them to be prone to diseases. Now I look for roses that have a good resistance to blackspots and mildew. TFS TTYL

I've grown roses for quite a few years and for a time did the granular application. I was always conscientious about applying regularly but that didn't mean I didn't have issues. What I discovered is if it is too dry the granules don't break down enough leaving the rose unprotected. If it is too wet they break down too quickly again leaving a period of time where the rose isn't protected. Since you cant see the granules you can't really know whats going on. Unfortunately you only know when there's a problem when something bad is happening. I changed my approach completely and its worked great for me. I use Rosetone for a feed and Bonides Rose Shield spray for disease and insect prevention. That spray and the one you're using look similar. In the heart of the season disease and insect prevention is key and doing the spray preventively at regular intervals guarantees the rose is getting what it needs for protection with no gaps where the plant is left vulnerable.

My experience with DA has been terrible in PNW because of rainy weather. They easily catch block spots. Instead of dealing with all the mess, I just buy the varieties that are disease resistant for the location and weather. Works out much better IMO.

We treat our DA roses as soon as they leaf out. But we still see some black spot very late in the growing season on our most vigorously growing roses, particularly when the summer is really wet (we got 25 inches + here in Northern New England in 2021). Highly recommend treating with an OMRI horticultural oil - like All Seasons from Bonide - to clear out any fungal disease in the late winter/early spring..

Thank you for this video! What kind of granular item do you use as a preventative?
@MickF04
@MickF04 2 месяца назад
Here in Central Texas, you can have very healthy roses, and seemingly overnight they will be overtaken by Black Spot. Some here have indicated you can have a very disease resistant variety, and for several years the roses will look great. Then one season Black Spot will hit the then hard, sometimes beyond recovery. I am experiencing that this year with a basic landscape rose (six Coral Drift roses). I had a moderate case last year. With the more "elegant" roses, this is tough to deal with on a large scale. Back in northern California, the biggest issues I had to face with my Hybrid Teas, Floribundas, and David Austin roses were aphids and powdery mildew. Those are far easier to manage than Black Spot. I think my days of growing any rose may be over, at least while in Central Texas. The constant battle isn't worth it, not with so many other wonderful plants to grow.

Leaf spot on hydrangeas rarely kill the plant. Mine get it every year but the extent is different each year. Cleaning up the dropped foliage is key to helping reduce it. I have done one clean up already but will do it again after this rain decides to stop. The rain is making it worse. Then I’ll put down fresh mulch. I get it really bad on some big leaf ones that don’t get great airflow. But they still produce great blooms!

In my case the leaves shriveled up and died little by little. I also cleaned up the leaves and started treating the 2nd one immediately before it the disease was noticeable. Everyone has such beautiful ones without issue. Here is what PW told me to do: Dear Karen, There are several fungal leaf spot diseases that attack the foliage of hydrangeas. The most common is Cercospora leaf spot (Cercospora hydrangea) and anthracnose is another. We recommend applying a copper-based fungicide on the foliage. It also helps to remove badly infected leaves and clean them up from the base of the plant. We hope this information is useful.

Do you have a climbing rose recommendation for a shorter arch? The Generous Gardener is gorgeous and I love it, but I think it would get out of control on a shorter arbor just based on seeing how quickly it has grown along your arbor. I need at least two different varieties for two arbors in my garden and like to see if people actually have experience with a rose instead of relying on the specific rose info on websites. Proven Winners appears to be coming out with a few climbers next year (I'm looking at Rise Up Lilac Days), but those look like they may be short climbers and there are no photos of it on a trellis/arch.
