Black Spots on My Orchid Leaf: Should I be Worried?

Black spots on orchid leaves could mean one of three things:
(1) the orchid was bruised during transport or handling,
(2) the leaves have had access to more sunlight then they require, or
(3) bacteria has infected the leaf.
Since the first two reasons are fairly easy to resolve and there’s no need to panic, this video will focus on the bacterial infection. But as a guide, brown spots can occur during rough handling, and the leaves bruised. They will recover in a month’s time. As for sunlight, move the orchid away from direct sun.
Black spots on orchid leaves are a direct result of a bacterial infection caused by Acidovorax (syn. Pseudomonas), known as Bacterial Brown Spot. The spots start off as brown smudges, minuscule in size and appear waterlogged. When pressed, the leaf will ooze sappy liquid.This initial stage could be mistaken with overwatering, since the leaves can’t eliminate the excess water faster than the roots can absorb it. Water will cause blisters on the leaf, which eventually turn brownish-black.
Contrary to overwatering, with Bacterial Brown Spot, the infection will appear a nasty green color, slowly fading to yellow circle-like halo around the spot, then black.Black is the final stage, when the blister sinks down into the leaf, leaving an “open pond”, or whole.

I purchased this plant already infected. It was on sale and thought it was just cold burn. Luckily, I kept it away from other orchids! When I realized it was an infection, I threw out leaves & flowers. I'm trying to start new plants with flower spikes. Also, since lots of the roots were good, I'm trying to grow new leaves from the base of the stem by the roots. I just ordered your Orchid record book so I can keep records of my experiences.

Amanda, do you recommend an automatic Physan 20 treatment to any orchid once you bring it into your home?

Hi Amanda, Thank you for useful info. I had a case with on of my orchids. I bought a new phalaenopsis. I was so happy that I have a plant with 5 flower spikes. I was so excited about it. I left it a side and kept it in the plastic wrap to avoid any temp shock. After 3 days, I noticed a black spot on one of the leave. When I removed the plastic, I found one pod trapped between 2 leaves. Bacteria start to grow on both of them. I use H2O2 to treat it but for some reason it did not work for me. Finally, I had to cut the infected part and used cinnamon.

I picked an infected plant on sale to save it, it had a cut leave and a lot of the white dust bugs, I cleaned it and disinfected it, after a while my orchid starter to grow really healthy it's leaves went from droopy to stiff and it grew a new leave but now I see a big brownish to black spot with dead tissue at the middle
@yogablossom100
I got brow spots on the flower and dark line on side of leaves. Is this also Bacterial related? I heard someone say to add a bit of cayenne pepper on water. Is this a possible treatment too?
@alixshores4118
I bought an orchid as a rescue and I thought it was just a little bruising, I think my orchid has a bacterial infection:( none of my other plants are showing signs of infection wondering if neem would also work? I will be doing hydrogen peroxide for now! Thank you for such an informative video! The browning isn’t to bad just on one spot but it does seem to be spreading
@fungames24
I can see the orchid with white flower on the left of the video showing black near the stem, surrounded by yellow. I think I have something similar developing on the leaves below the top most pair. Is this normal, or rot?

I tied my orchid to the avocado tree I have, last year. It was dying inside so I gave it the black tea treatment, which helped the roots come back to being green. I tied it to the trunk but I think it was too tied. I did see some growth of new leaves on that sick orchid but that was it. The baby one I bought hasn't done anything but it's still alive. Now recently I've seen bite marks on the leaf from the previously sick orchid. I've pretty much left nature take care of it cause I pretty much gave up. I live in Florida and it's hot, but rains every day during this summer. I've tried to growing plants but everything dies on me, so I think the orchids I have have a slight better chance of survival outside.

Hi Amanda. I recently watched your video on hydrogen peroxide burning roots etc but here you recommend using it on the everything including the roots. Is that just because it such a severe case?

My Orchid is blooming and looking pretty however every leave on it has brown spots but there are not on top of the leave but all are underneath the leaves. Is that Bacterial Brown spots too?

Hi Amanda. I really appreciate your videos. Recently I sprayed some of my plants, including some orchids, with a neem oil and castile soap mixture. The next day i noticed huge black spots on several of the leaves of multiple orchid plants. My plants live outside (southwest Florida). I'm not sure if the neem oil + new sunshine burned the leaves (a massive tree was cut down so my back yard is now much more sunny than it was a week ago,) or if they're suffering from something else. Do I cut these leaves off or just keep them in a shady area?

Interesting Channel. I've only seen about five videos so not really ready to make a judgment outside of interesting but definitely interesting.
