What can you do with a clothes line, a few bits of wood, some trellis and enough sticky-back plastic to rival Blue Peter? Build a squirrel assault course with your son of course. Add one black squirrel and watch the action unfold!
Lovely video!! So nice to see someone actually rooting for the squirrel - too many comments about blasting holes in them for eating birdfood. :( I feed the squirrels in my garden - and they, and I, chase away the birds... the crows and Jays are obnoxious! Enjoy your talented fuzzles!!
a squirrel's tail acts as a parachute and slows the squirrels fall. In addition, the squirrel's lightweight body allows squirrels to run away from falls from trees two stories up.
Oh this is AMAZING! What a smart little squirrel, and what a fantastic idea. Little guy *definitely* deserved those treats at the end! Thank you so much for doing and sharing this!
the fluffy fur would act like a improvised parachute. squirrels do live in big heights, so they face the problem of falling every day. the evolution brought them the fluffy tail and fur. similar problem @ wikipedia -> cat righting reflex -> terminal velocity
Tony Servantes (if I am spelling it right) brought a male and female black squirrel from Mexico to The Park in Spruce ave. in South San Francisco. They multipled! Thanks Tony-half Apache!
@writerstevebarley Got it. Thank you SO much for your patience in answering my questions. It was REALLY interesting to watch this squirrel. When my mom & I moved here (New York) from Las Vegas, she saw that we would have squirrels coming RIGHT up to the trailer window. She set up a mini course for them to get to a string of peanuts tied to a rake handle. She thought they would nibble the string just above the bottom peanut, & take them ONE at a time. One bit the string at the top, & took ALL!
Bournemouth gardens are full of pet rabbits now - people cantafford to keep them as pets, but they get on really well with the squirrels. I've only seen one black squirrel there though -
This is horrible! You are going to raise a generation of ninja squirrels! Soon you will see armies of squirrels training on your assault course in preparation of the downfall of humanity by stealing our nuts in more and more ingenious ways!
It was done over about 6 weeks. My son and I added one section at a time each weekend until the washing line could take no more! The squirrels are not only 'cheeky' but flipping clever as they mastered each section within a week. Check out the outtakes which I've compiled into another RU-vid video called 'Squirrel Assault Course Outtakes' on my channel.
but squirrels have such dainty little bones! if he fell from such a height, i'm sure he'd break something! and WHO would bare the blame for the squirrel's sprained wrist? i'll tell you the answer: steve barley.
may i just say that this man has the coolest accent ever my older sister found it attractive i can't say yes but i can't disagree make more squirrel videos!
...and to think all of that added to his line, and all it did was make it easier for the squirrel who would have shimmied down the line without it anyways.
Even though they're a tad dated but you should look up Daylight Robbery I and II about squirrels and bird feeders. Both filmed in the UK with some clips from other countries. Cheeky is right. They are good at getting to the food.
Black squirrels aren't poisonous they are the same squirrel as the grays. Like the "blue" geese in a flock of snows (white geese with black wing tips.) the black squirrels are a one gene color phase. Blacks and grays can come out of the same litter. The black ones originated in Canada. They think the black fur helps them absorb heat from the sun in winer, an advantage out weighing greater visibility topredators.
funny! but... in my yard, the squirrels are so smart, they would just jump that meter up and get to it straight, lol.... I had that feeder hanging 3 meters off the ground, and they would find a way to jump straight up and grab the edge and eat upside-down, making ab crunches, lol... rodents: the smartest animals there are!
