PLUS, an unboxing from a FAR AWAY friend of the channel in Germany.

Hello, and welcome to the mill. We love being outdoors so much, and have a great time sharing it with so many. We still find it amazing when we look at a finished piece that we have created, and realize that when it arrived here, it was a log. It's now a functional piece in someone's life. From log to final form is so cool to be part of. Thank you so much for your kind words, and we hope we can chat again in the comments.

Let's see how long that lasts Dan. When we seem to get done with something, more arrives. It's tough to turn down good logs. It's good to have all this lumber, and slabs that will turn into many projects.

Hallo Peter.

Nice shirts, I'll have to visit the Woodruff Woods site, never seen it before. That was very thoughtful of Peter, the incense burner house was beautiful, as were the pot holders, were they crocheted or quilted? I like the looks of the sap wood but, I probably missed your explanation about it in a previous video, what is bad about it?
@IronOakSawmill
@IronOakSawmill Год назад
Thank you grandma j. Lisa and Darrin are a great couple. We were lucky enought to meet them in person, at the Paul Bunyan show in Ohio in 2022. It was a great surprise that Peter sent us a package, filled with so many great things. The potholders were all crocheted by Peter. Very thick, and Deb says, to pretty to use. It's a preference thing, but structurally, sap wood is softer. It can be used like we see in so many projects, but , does lower the value of lumber to a person looking for heart wood only. Overall, it all comes down to personal preference.
@debfromthemill6945

I keep waiting for them to cut that monster tree in the background! Do y'all wait until the lumber/slabs reaches a certain moisture content before y'all sell it or is it that y'all have such a nice stockpile?
@IronOakSawmill
@IronOakSawmill Год назад
Howdy and welcome to the mill. That monster tree is on the project list. We will have to make some time to get it cleaned up. We will dry all of the lumber and slabs for at least 1 year per inch of thickness. We can usually get it to 10%-12% MC. We always recommend taking the lumber inside for a while before using it. We have some slabs in the shop that are down to 8% -9% MC. We always tell anyone who buys from us, to do the same. We have a whole new lot of slabs that are ready for projects in the coming year.

Correct my if I am wrong, but wouldn't knots in the board make it unique??
@IronOakSawmill
@IronOakSawmill Год назад
That depends on who you are talking to. Some want clear straight grain. Others like a lot of character, and unique grain. We try to get all we can of both, out of every log we mill

@IronOakSawmill
@IronOakSawmill Год назад
I would make sure he knows what he wants, before I cut up a log. It all depends on what look he is going for. Get them to commit to a size first
@josephmartin8160
@josephmartin8160 Год назад
Do you think a mantle made of oak that is 11 ft long by 4 - 1/2 in. thick by 8 wide would be a good size? The customer is asking for my opinion and that's the best I can do considering I haven't cut many mantles. I'm not going to hold you to anything LOL just wondering what you think.
