We always think of harvesting black walnuts so that we can eat the inside seeds but harvesting green walnuts to make a powder out of their Hull is a little unusual these days. But the hulls of the black walnuts have been harvested to make medicine such as: treating parasitic worm infections such as heart worm and other infections. But did you know it has been used to treat diphtheria and syphilis in the past? It has also been used as a hair dye or to treat skin wounds.
Watch as Taylor shows you how simple it is to make black walnut Hull powder.
Taylor from Campbell’s Freedom Farm
Please note we are not doctors we are just showing you how it is made.

Nice vid & demo. I gather some each fall from the county park across the street from my house & have made tincture & infused oil. The reason it kills parasitic worms but worms live inside the hulls is because the ones in the hulls aren't worms. They are insect larvae with much different physiology (likes, dislikes, & tolerances). They couldn't survive in the same places that the parasites do.

Thank you for the comment. I never knew that about the about the insect larvae, very interesting. We use the black hull a lot on our farm. Thanks for watching and we love the comments. Taylor

Good video! I keep learning of cool uses for the black walnut. We planted 700 walnut trees when I was 13(now I’m 46) and those trees are doing well!

Thank You! 700 walnut trees is a lot, but a great thing to do. Do you sell the walnuts? The nuts and wood is so valuable. Later this week we are also going to make Lemon Grass powder, also very healthy. Thanks again, Taylor

@@Gardening-FarmtoTable-andMore we just eat them ourselves. We have a family farm in central Indiana. We are thinking about planting more for the benefit of my future grandchildren:) I look forward to seeing your lemon grass video. I’m also interested in how to safely eat acorns(no, I’m not a squirrel😅)

Just posted a lemongrass powder video that I thought you might like. We use lemongrass all year in powder form , just as the black walnut hull. Taylor

Thank you so much for enlightening me to just go for it! Very helpful info, I have a giant black walnut protector in my yard and I've observed numerous animals from squirrels to golden bald eagles visiting my tree. Gonna try this out thanks a million!❤

I will also try this method. I never knew the medicinal side of black walnuts.Have you ever heard of adding some to making bread, or is it better in smoothies and such ?

Dr Bach remedies which were introduced in 1930s?? Or earlier, listed the walnut as a remedy to help protect us against outside influences in general, and against the effects of change in particular. Life transitions… Walnut people are fulfilling their purpose in life but sometimes doubt their path when they hear the opinions, theories or beliefs of others. If you happen to move where you have access to one, or in your own backyard perhaps this is Divine intervention rather than coincidental. 🙏✨❤️

How do you take the powder? What does it taste like?
@Gardening-FarmtoTable-andMore
@Gardening-FarmtoTable-andMore 2 года назад
Taste horrible, so mix with a little yogurt for humans. Dogs we use the $1 Purina Cat pate-any medicine buried in a spoonful is undetectable, we assume the liver smell. Let us know if you try it. Taylor

Don’t recommend sniffing right after grinding powder- the juglione in the black walnut hull is a respiratory irritant and can cause major problems if it gets into your lungs.

Yes, you can dry the hulls in the oven at low heat. We dry our lemon grass this way as well. Thanks for watching, Taylor

Thank you for the video, how long do you air dry it for ? And what temperature setting do you set it at ?
@Gardening-FarmtoTable-andMore
Thanks for watching! I used the ostba food dehydrator at highest setting which is 158 degrees Fahrenheit. I kept it on overnight, which was roughly 15 hours. I used totally dried green hulls. I hope that helps. I know that my mom (Sabrina) is working with the powder to make a chemically free hair dye. I think she will do a video this winter. Thanks for watching, Taylor

I wonder if you know whether other types of walnut hulls have the same therapeutic properties? I have walnuts here on my Italian property but they are a different variety.
@Gardening-FarmtoTable-andMore
Interesting question. I know the English walnut leaves, but, & hull are all used in the medical field. Are you the J Mandshurica or J Regis L? I am sharing a government website: Ncbi.nlm.nih.gov. Let me know what variety you have, I want to research this. So Italy, how wonderful-I have traveled there and loved it there. Sabrina

I harvested some from my tree 4 months ago. They have been sitting in a bag and are black now on their own. Could I still do this?
@Gardening-FarmtoTable-andMore
The reason we use green is because they have not basically rotted. It’s like an avocado once you cut it it turns black. But once at rots You could still dry but I would only use it for dyes.

Hi do just add a spoon ful to a glass of water to use this powder?? How do you use it??
@Gardening-FarmtoTable-andMore
Yeah depending on your weight, we use a half teaspoon. Or else since I don’t like the taste I’ll add it to yogurt. Sabrina

What can you do with very ripened black walnut hulls?
@Gardening-FarmtoTable-andMore
@Gardening-FarmtoTable-andMore 4 месяца назад
Actually I have been working on something that probably won’t work. Black walnuts stop the growth and even kills some plants. I’m wondering if a nontoxic mixture can be made for weed control. Crazy idea but you never know. Sabrina

I thought you were supposed to use the blackened husk
@Gardening-FarmtoTable-andMore
The green husk dries black. The black hulls are starting to rot as well as fall apart which makes it even hard to process. Go for the green and freshest. I really appreciate you watching. Taylor

I thought the medicine was in the hull, NOT the fruit?
@Gardening-FarmtoTable-andMore
That’s what she’s grinding up the hull. You use the hull when it is green, then basically you peel it off, then dry, then grind. It is really simple, it’s just messy and time consuming. Thanks for watching
