It's crazy to see that the most pirate like scenes in One Piece have been of recent years. I beleive Oda didn't want to give us traditional pirate fights until the end of the story because the fights wouldn't feel as special. I mean. Traditional pirate fights are a dime a dozen, but to hold back the pirate tropes for a quarter century and then go full force at the end is a genius idea

@@ReiseLukasAlso the times have changed. Had One piece had a normal pirate before it wouldn't had be as big as it did. But because One Piece has build up enough shonen fights it can finally get to the next level without losing interest. The reason I first gave One Piece a chance was when I first saw Luffy vs Lucci and decided to check the series out.

@@JohnSmithPlaysGames Oda said that there WILL be a character with an eyepatch that is, and I quote, "going to be a very important character once he's revealed". He's just building up all of the hype for the ""proper"" Pirate character (I.E. A pirate with an eyepatch, the same hype just like he did with Blackbeard and his traditional pirate-antics. )

One Piece is a pirate story, but most of the series subverts the tropes. Blackbeard dives head first. He's what you think of when it comes to a pirate.

It's ironic really. One Piece subverts the Pirate tropes so much that when they do show up we love it. It's almost like the absent of the tropes made us appreciate them more. Oda is even intentionally saving the classic eye patch for someone special near the end of the story from what I hear. Would be crazy if the Final War in One Piece ends up being the most stereotypical Pirate Naval fight of all time.
