Here's my full review of the Blackberry Key2 after 3 weeks. I go over in detail some of the problems with the keyboard size and layout, something many of you may overlook, specifically this phone is NOT made for people with large hands and layout is NOT the easiest I have used on a smartphone w/ a physical keyboard. It's not all about speed with the keyboard, it's more about the accuracy.
@pauldiaz4769

You're confusing your audience in regards of the QWERTY keyboard use. You DON'T need to hold de shift or the Alt key for capitalization or numbers. You can hit it and then hit the letter that you need capitalized, or the number. For periods you just quickly double tap the space bar. Please don't confuse your audience with problems you're having only because you haven't cared to learn how to use the keyboard the right way just yet. You also seem to ignore there's swipe up gestures on the physical keyboard to boost the typing speed by choosing from 3 predictions. That's when the physical keys beat the glass virtual keys in terms of speed. BlackBerry virtual keyboards have the same feature, but it doesn't feel the same. The physical keyboard itself boost your accuracy, the gestures boost your speed.

Sorry but I made this review from point of view of how I use the keyboard and I hate using one tap for capitals, the point is that shift key is in hard to use position, I personally don't use long press caps or double tap for caps because it takes too long.
@pauldiaz4769
@pauldiaz4769 6 лет назад
Max Lee You can also hold any key for less than a second and it'll capitalize. I feel you didn't take the time to learn how to use the keyboard before posting this review.

@@pauldiaz4769 You are totally correct. He didn't take the time to figure out how to optimize his experience. You can hold or press the alt key twice and type numbers 3X faster then a POS OSK (Alt lock duh). You can select text 5x faster and get to mistakes 5x faster with shortcuts like double tapping the keyboard and holding the ctrl key. You can copy and paste using keyboard shortcuts. You can swipe back on the keyboard to quickly delete mis-typed words (he sat there hammering the backspace obviously not understanding that the keyboard is capacitive). He didnt even touch on the masterful switching of applications or the fact that anyone sending you emails will be utterly shocked and amazed at how quickly you respond. This man doesn't understand productivity or he would have learned these things within the fist week.

You don't need to hold down shift or Alt keys to write numbers or caps.. It is enough to pres it once.. Double pres Alt and it is only numbers and signs. Double press shift and it locks caps. You know what is turned on because there is sign for it in notification area.

I remember when texting and driving wasn't illegal, and I literally had my blackberry in one hand while I was driving and could count the buttons over so I wouldn't have to look at what button I was pressing.

Nice review, however, long press any letter for capital letters. Also, when comparing the physical keyboard to typing on a slab of glass, if you put the phones side by side you will see the key2 will give the user more screen, therefore taking up less space than the general slabs of glass. #blackberry #key2

Also Max Lee, a far better alternative for Capital letters: Just press shift once with you left finger and then press whichever key you want to become capital - you don´t have to hold Shift down ;) I also agree with sean burnett, that you do in effect have more screen real estate, especially with the navigation keys also being off screen. My main scenario is actually using two apps at the same time - with any other phone, if you were to type something in on one of the apps, the other app would be shifted upwards a lot. With the KeyOne (or 2) the apps stay almost the same, which is invaluable for me when comparing something or writing off something from the second app!

Max Lee it won't be a hit. I had couple of sliders from blackberry. When the slider is closed the screen is very wobbly and feel very cheap. Also you finding your self use more the on screen keyboard then the physical one. And it will be always more shallow keys and not very comfortable to type on.

Hi, how goes it. I was a bb user for yrs. A few yrs I got a galaxy s6 as well. Had a bb torch that had a nice slide out kb. I'm not a huge gamer at all, just one pool game I play here and there. I love the battery life from what I've seen on this device as well. I've been thinking on making the switch to the keyone after 5 yrs on this s6. How's your experience. Would you happen to know if the keyone supports the app Periscope which is a live broadcast app owned by Twitter. Appreciate your time, ty.

In high school, my blackberry was my binder. Having Word, Excell, power point in my hand was revolutionary. Being able to take notes and only glance at the screen once in a while was great. Email myself and printing it made school work so well organized and less cumbersome compared to my friends. Just like a PC keyboard, the muscle memory of having a blackberry is in its own league. Holding a conversation with someone while sending a properly written text is why I still use a blackberry today. As well as the Android support finally, security and the hot key function. Keep the physical keyboard BlackBerry Androids coming!
@bendiep
@bendiep 6 лет назад
To Max Lee There's 3 ways to capitalise on blackberries: 1. Shift + Letter 2. Shift -> Letter 3. Hold Letter And for your number issue: If you plan on typing multiple numbers in a row. You want to use the ALT LOCK by double pressing ALT. For single numbers, use Alt -> Number There is also SHIFT LOCK (double press SHIFT) There are loads more shortcuts as well. And that's the real reason why physical keyboards are faster than virtual keyboards.

Can't agree more about epic 4g. Loved keyboard, size, and everything. Now I watch your youtube on priv. I like priv having full screen with slide up keyboard. But super slow. Sometimes, can't stand. That's why I'm considering key2. Better keyboard and faster process than priv sounds great with an exception of smaller screen. Basically, for me, priv vs key2 is screen vs speed. I think a modern version of epic 4g is a perfect solution like you said. Good review. Oh, and I'm Korean too. 키보드

12:57 Blackberry portrait keyboard is design specifically for single hand typing... A landscape keyboard forces you to type with both hands.... The only problem I have with the keyboard is it does not have a row for numbers and they should have made it with two shift keys on both sides... I really love the Blackberry Key2 more than it’s predecessor the Blackberry Priv... The Key2 is like an Android version of the smaller BlackBerry Q10.

To get caps you can long press on the letter, to get a period, double space, to get numbers only long press on ALT. Though, they should have added another ALT button on right side of keyboard. You can also get a virtual keyboard at the same time by pressing on SYM button. Been using KEY2 for 3 months, first week was tough, but, got quickly used to it.
@xburk550
@xburk550 6 лет назад
Not sure if you know this yet? When you want a capital letter, you only have to hit shift key followed by letter you want. No need to hold it down. Also, if you want all caps or all symbols, hold down shift key for two seconds to enter that mode.

A nice and honest review. I'm picking up a KEY2 soon and I'm a long time BlackBerry owner that has the right size hands for this size phone. I don't play games on my phone so, 1080p and a 4.5" screen is enough. It has more RAM, improved battery life, a bigger keyboard, and better cameras. The only thing I'm curious about is if TCL and BlackBerry will keep updating the camera software. Thanks for the review.

Remember folks the anxiety eases tap " SYM " key and it pops the virtual keyboard which I use in conjunction with Qwerty . I have big hands just long hold the alt key release the alt key then tap your numbers or tap sym key and tap your numbers. Double tap the space bar gives you the period. Long Hold the up arrow key and release and you get Cap letters. BlackBerry OS has the HUB and privacy features
@erics5331
@erics5331 6 лет назад
The "numbers issue" could be resolved by double clicking the alt key, it will "alt lock" the phone and the alt symbol will appear underlined and then the numbers and symbols are active until alt is clicked again, as for capitol letters I tend to just hit shift with my left thumb and then move to whatever letter is needed, pressing shift once makes the next button pressed capitol, it doesn't need to be held, also double clicking shift makes it go "caps lock", the symbol up top will also change (arrow gets solid fill). I believe all Blackberry android phones with physical keyboards work this way, my Priv's keyboard also worked with this same way with double clicking to "lock" either alt or shift. Also its been mentioned below but double tap space for a period as well. EDIT: Also if you double tap the keyboard you get navigation buttons on screen, helpful in editing text

Interesting insights. You and Flossy actually were quite critical on the concept were others like Juan Bagnell were happy to adopt the phone as their daily driver. Both with good arguments, just a different take. In the old days, I was a Nokia E-series fan (seems to be a smaller group than I thought, since most are just talking about WinMo or BB), and I had a great experience typing on a qwerty keyboard. I used a E71 which was more narrow, but before that I had the E61, which was almost as wide as the Key2. I do remember finding the E71 the more comfortable phone. A big benefit is the use in different languages. I switch between Dutch and English all the time and often I forget to switch the language on my keyboard making my tekst a mess that I then have to delete. Yes, Switfkey's dual language option works pretty well, but I like to use Fleksy which is kinda like the BBOS10 keyboard, the best software keyboard I ever used (and BBOS10 is the best smartphone OS, not taken in account the apps). Also, I like to use proper punctuation, of which in Dutch the use is quite high. Our accountmanager is going to send me a Key2 to try out, so I'm curious if I'll like it. Btw, I always thought you were one of those big Korean dudes and estimated you around 1,85m, lol.

It is a very good concept but they forgot to make two sizes, every flagship now offer two sizes even LG with regular G7 or larger V30. Blackberry makes Key2 Plus with more features and maybe ip68 rating and wireless charging, people will be switching to BB like before. That is why I was interested in the 2nd Key2 but keyboard is nearly same, and I think masses will agree with me, while crackberry fans will like anything BB puts out.
@djoetma
@djoetma 6 лет назад
Max Lee Yes, two sizes would help. Same with water and dustproofing. Not sure what it would do to the price though. I can imagine that it's way harder (thus more expensive) to make a keyboard phone comply to those IP norms. So it depends on the success of the BB Key series I guess. If it's successful, they might look towards an option to apply to an even wider group and up the quality.
@BIGMACMCDONALDLEE

They can release phones every 6 months like LG, bigger version later slowly. Just make XL version of Key2 with a bigger traditional keyboard with numbers row and be done with it.

I'm definitely agree with you about the keyboard layout. Why would Blackberry make the ALT key and NUMBER all on the same side. It's painful for me to reach the right thumb all over to the left side. It's really a far trip. This is my suggestion: ALT key and NUMBER key are on the opposite side; only 1 SHIFT key (wow this is an absolutely right decision from Blackberry because we use SHIFT so little, just need to hold the letter key then it turns capital) and 1 speed key (should be more in left side, familiar to ALT-TAB in computer), and maybe an ALT-TAB option like in the BBOS ALT-BACK... That's should be awesome!
@lltechview
@lltechview 6 лет назад
Pro Tip. Instead of hitting Shift key you can hold the key to make it go capital. (same as on BB10 devices) As for typing numbers. Double tap ALT for "ALT Lock". (notice the ALT logo in the statusbar) Again on BB10 the same. So BB Users coming from older Keyboard phones feel at home with it. (I have a classic here. The KeyOne keyboard is a bit unusual for a BB with its shiny keys and smaller keys so I hope the Key2 can be a successor for it) As for size. I would like a Passport successor with maybe a 5 Inch 1:1 screen maybe. "Working wide" is still something really really cool. Netflix and video stuff is only "if you really need to" on the keyboard blackberrys. I like that actually. But yeah a Priv 2 with higher specs the Key2 keyboard would be a nice compromise. Though that won't be cheap and I am not sure TCL/BB Mobile is capable of building that (at least they would need some help from BB Ltd. who actually designed the Priv) When it comes to landscape keyboards. Have you heard of the Gemini PDA? The only issue with that is that the display closes like a lid on the laptop. So you don't see the display when the device is closed. Though still a nice device even though the software needs some updates. But with Linux and SailfishOS being there as alternative this might develop into something really interesting for us hackers and tinkerers

Hi Max, I am thinking of a new idea of making cellphone case with a Bluetooth mini keyboard. When the keyboard is not used, it is hiden inside the case. When the user want to use the keyboard, he can extract it from the case. And the case has to be slim enough similar to the normal cellphone case. How do you think this idea? Is it cool ?

Does BB (they changes the name from RIM years ago) even design the phones? Or did TCL just use the patent for those keys (BB keys are specially designed and different from keys on other phones)? Most of the TCL BB-phones were just ODM-devices. Some actually came out as other brands as well (Alcatel if I'm not mistaken). This, apart from the KeyOne is the first BB exclusive phone since the Priv I think.

Blackberry with landscape keyboard... What a wonderful idea! I had a BlackBerry Classic and I was very disappointed because I never could use the keyboard for gaming. Indeed I couldn't even map the keys inside games even using emulators. I had an old Nokia E6 and it was a great phone for emulation with the possibility to map the keys. Some people will disagree but I always prefer Nokia keyboard phones because they were pretty similar to desktop keyboards. Just my opinion...

I use a Priv. You need not hold shift to capitalize. Press once and it is for a single letter or long press a letter for capital. Double press for CAPS LOCK ON. Also You need not hold alt to type number. Double tap alt and it locks. Also Double tap space for period. Problem solved. You seemed to not know how the keyboard use. I agree that touch screens need a wide keyboard. That is because you can't rest your finger on the screen. But in a physical keyboard it is much easier when keys are close but not too close to type. Because you need less time to drag your finger between letters. For example if i am resting my finger on D and want to type F i don't move onto F, instead I just press towards left. And my Priv keyboard supports swipe typing and I guess Key2 does too. BTW I have large fingers yet i have no problem typing in the physical. Note that this is my first device with a Physical keyboard and I absolutely love it.

If you make this phone slightly wider then this phone would become the Passport SE 2

Been using the Priv for two years now, it's on its last toe, but after two years I can type 50+ wpm, with solid accuracy (I don't need to look at the screen at this point), and it's just so much more comfortable. Definitely can't stand my wife's iphone when I have to type on it. You can go quite fast typing after enough practice.

I still have my Samsung Slyde... it's not even a smartphone for those of you who don't know. Out around the time of flip phones, t9, and the LG Rumor. I like to use it from time to time for the slide out keyboard. I'd pay decent money for a phone with a slide out keyboard. As long as they don't make it huge... currently using the Samsung A8 and I would not want anything bigger. This is pushing it.

I think it's a patent issue as to why BB wouldn't make their device a with a flip out landscape keyboard like that. Otherwise they would've made one even from the BB OS7 era. The priv is the only model they can make, in terms of hiding the keyboard away.

People forget that bb doesnt just offer tje pbysical keyboard, they also give you phone which is high on security that protects the users information. Just saying.

For me the PKB is less about speed and more about comfort. However, comfort is something you cant put a number on and thats why its a hard sell in the age of glass slab phones.

Thanks for this review. I am using the KeyOne and I love it.... $650 is super steep when I could get the S9 for the same price. (I this whole review without looking on my KeyOne with 20% smaller buttons) I think I will like this phone!

Have you tried just holding the button down for a few extra seconds usually it will give you the capital letter and at the top row holding the button down will give you the number cheers

I get what you're saying about the landscape keyboards (those are my FAVE, so I get you), BUT think about social media on a screen like that? There's nothing there. It would be awful. I think that's a big part of why BB didn't do that. lol.

Max Omg Beautiful Blast from the past. Skinny Long fingers works, But absolutely agree with the caps and I want a little bigger because of the nails. I Loved the review and remember with the palm as well, but I think once you get used to it will get easier is what I remember, but agree if they could just do what you recommend. They could have a Nice Comeback. Blackberry Please listen. Max Loved the Review Deb.👌👍✌

Max Lee it’s the perfect phone for people who love the physical keyboard. I’ve been a black user for close to a decade. I used the blackberry torch for close to 6 years , I then owned a blackberry passport ,last year , I replaced my passport with the priv and now after your review,I’m convinced that the key2 is the one I’m looking for.

Definitely need to add a new row for numbers and the shift key fro capitalize, plus, expand the landscape to a 5.0 and better resolution. And don't forget the S pen. Plus, blackberry speakers were always the best. Only problem, not waterproof. I miss the one you have and I still have the original stored away the 8830.

Yeah just make a bigger version, Blackberry is limiting itself to only half the audience since smartphone sizes have gotten much bigger these days. Or just go all out and bring a big badass keyboard with all the bells and whistles.

I have big hand, and clearly the Keyone was amazing back to form for the Keyboard. I cannot go fast for virtual keyboard because i clearly remove all auto correct. The keyboard is bigger than the BB back in the days. Just like i had to force myself to use Virtual keyboards for so long, you need to get back to the Keyboard. The shift and alt keys always been there, and make a lot of sense. On Keyone there is 2 shift and i never use the right shift key.

Thought I wanted a key two. But will stick with note 9. My note 4 is still pretty solid phone. Eats batteries for breakfast though. Hopefully Samsung has improved note 9 battery life. Note 4 is great having to option to replace battery. BB is about 10 years too late, although nice options.

One of the reasons Blackberry finds itself almost Left Behind is because they neglected to focus on not only app developer's but Flagship devices with awesome cameras thinking that the business people would carry them into the future but there are millions of people out there who are actually interested in top tier phones, granted recently we've had some pretty impressive mid Rangers that pussy has some pretty impressive cameras Blackberry has never been known for good camera quality in their phones again focusing strictly on the businessman on the go. It's note mentioning that Nokia did do the landscape keyboards thing remember Nokia E7

Blackberry needs to come out with a slider. So you have large screen and then a slide out full keyboard. These Key blackberry's seem very odd shape to narrow. The Passport was the best designed BB imo.
