Thanks for the SE comparison! I have a 5S and was worried how the KEYone's screen would impede my RU-vid watching. Now that I know that videos will basically be the same size, I'm loving that phone now.
Thanks CBK! I've really been curious to know how it sized up against the iPhone plus series and iPhone 6. I've never been a carrier of large devices and this match up reassured me that the KEYOne wasn't as large as I first thought.
true the on-screen keyboard for all touchscreens might be larger and takes more space than the keyone, but in general with regular web browsing or social media browsing, the keyones screen is still smaller because of the keyboard. Regardless this phone looks really good and I can't wait to take it for a spin
excellent review, cannot wait for the device to come to the UK. Can we see the device side on with some of the others? the device is thicker than most if not all flagships, but I wonder how much thicker it really is? sometimes the specs don't reflect the real feel. I noticed you didn't talk about thickness during the review.
@CrackBerry Kevin - Are you using a special launcher on the KEYone? Your apps seem to go all the way to the top. I haven't used Android as my primary OS in a while but that seems new to me, haven't seen that before.
Standard BlackBerry Launcher. I drag around some of the widgets... make the clock smaller, put the google search bar onto the second page of apps, etc.
Good comparison. @Kevin - is it possible to use this device one handed? how pocketable is it? can't wait to buy it, for one reason alone - power button on the left side! I use my phone on the left hand.
Would like to see how it stacks up against a regular iphone 6S or iphone 7. the 6S+ 7+ are all considerably large devices. Also how about against the trust old Z10? Many of us are still looking for the right phone to move up from the Z10/Q10 devices!
Pricing was announced at $549 outright in US. Will need to hang on a bit for all the official announcements I think. But launch is imminent - not too long a wait.
Hey Kevin, thanks for a very informative video. I was wondering if France will be included in the first release of Key one? I can't wait any longer to put my fingers on that pkb since my passport died.
Great comparisons with the other phones! I love the clicky feel of the Passport but for some reason all the BlackBerry 10 physical keyboard devices I've used have had the infamous 'double typing' issue. Sure there have been software enhancements along the way and you could go as far as replacing the whole keyboard but it inevitably returns on these phones. Never happened on a PRIV and the KEYone just takes the KEYboard experience to the next level...hard to describe but it has just the right cushion in the pushin and click when power-typing. So not only are the keys the perfect size and spacing but they also give a great tactile feedback! It's a win for sure and a pleasure for physical keyboard fans.
The double typing issue goes all the way back to the BlackBerry OS phones. Being a hardware issue, software could only get you so far before replacing the hardware. Glad to know that the Priv never had it. Thank you for that nugget of info. Hopefully the KEYone is the same.
I've never been a blackberry person but the K1 definitely has my attention. Now that phone hardware has reached a certain level you really don't need crazy high end specs so much as you need to worry about the quality of the phone, it's unique features, etc. The only thing stopping me from immediately jumping on this is the lack of wireless charging and waterproofing. what can I say? I've been spoiled.
This video actually helped me decide on picking up a Priv. The screen real estate argument sold me. the Priv has the best screen real estate with the ability to scroll on the slide out keyboard lol
Test out the keyboard on the Priv before committing. Many people, including me, found it to be an uncomfortable typing experience, the keys have a very shallow travel and the weight of the device makes it seem unbalanced. I've since switched to the Dtek60.
Lincoln Liking I would agree too, I have the Priv, there isn't a great experience typing on it, Its just ok, but then you have to hold it in two hands, the processor on Priv isn't that comparatively , 625 is better, and am looking forward for the KeyOne
I've been a long time (long long time) sidekick user. I never wanted to give up the qwerty physical keyboard. I knew my phone has been too old when the priv came out, and I went to test the priv keyboard, and just hated it. I even went back to test it again, and it just never felt right. I couldn't justify the price of the phone for me. Recently my sidekick 4g (yeah, probably one of the last users), had an issue i wasnt interested in fixing, and its losing data service, and now wifi calling. So I picked up a cheap touch screen, so I really hope the keyone keyboard is a ton better than the priv. I probably would still get the keyone because the touch screen only option sucks. Really, I just wanted to say the Priv keyboard is lacking. The keyone keyboard looks better, but we wont know until its released.
Thanks Kevin for doing the Screen comparison - along with the keyboard(s) from different phones. It makes sense. There is a lot of Intelligence behind making this type of phone. I agree with your point on BB Passport. (Although I am thoroughly enjoying this phone!) Yes, it does feel "wide".
KEYone is great looking, very distinctive and much better for typing than regular no-physical keyboard devices. Still, it would be so good for video and photo viewing.
I didn't take the title literal. I thought this was going to be a review of the KeyONE. I just thought "Sized Up!" was a different spin on saying "reviewed." lol
interesting to see you actually get more space in apps. I wonder how it will work out in game's (not that I care, I dont play any on my phone), I'm thinking it will need some black bars to scale properly
can you compare it with the iphone 7 ? Seriously thinking about switching from my iphone 6 to the Keyone. It looks awesome. Plus love the qwerty keyboard. Thank you
arrgh your vid makes me debate with myself so much whether i should get this Keyone or not, been missing physical keys for so long since i went from a Q10 to other phones. the Priv didn't do it for me but this new offering looks so good, not sure i need a new phone so soon though as i only bought a new one in January :/ Maybe if they offer it in a seasonal sale i would go for it. i hope it does well for the company, BlackBerry been taking so much stick over the past few years
Interesting to see that the KEYone keyboard is the same size as the Priv keyboard. I've heard complaints about the Priv keyboard being too small. Wonder what people will say about the KEYone keyboard once it is out in the wild. Thanks for the comparison Kevin! Thinking of diving into Android with the KEYone.
dweiss1 I think Jeff is correct. The early tests I've seen seem to indicate that the KEYone's keyboard is def better and a least a modicum bigger than the Priv's. The KEYone's keys sound like they're just a bit less sculpted than those on the Classic or Bold 9xxx series. But at least the frets are there, so that should help with key spacing and "muscle memory" while re-acclimating to typing on a physical keyboard.
Hey CBK this makes me want to upgrade old BlackBerry tour 9630 to the BlackBerry KEYone to bad i can't afford it well i guess i should start saving up for it i may be 14 but we I've loved BlackBerry since 2009 i cant wait to save up to buy the KEYone you concluded my decision on buying one more
my concerns is about the battery life actually I left my passport because of the system it was painful the battery life was good now I am using s7edge but as you said the keyone can last one or two days if it's then I am going again for my next bb
BB should come up with Dual Sim KeyOne. I believe lot of businessmen who travel alot will surely buy KeyOne . I will be the first one to buy if it was Dual Sim.
As long as the rumors are true that Verizon MIGHT be getting one-time sold and at 549 it's a lot easier to swallow that when the PRIV came to the market
It is refreshing to see bb with android OS when all phones on the market look exactly the same. It is similar size as the New galaxy s8 (148.9 x 68.1 x 8.0 mm) but S8 have 5.8 inch screen screen and battery is only 3000mAh, meaning you will be hugging the wall. Moreover, S8 glass design feels fragile, slippery and it is fingerprint magnet Hope there is no bloatware, does it come with stock android ?
i wanna make it my next device.Currently i am using s7edge so bit PrePlaxed abhu Physical Keyboard? so wating for Hands on BB Store then only i wll think to Exchange it with my sammy!
Andromeda Sirius Kevin I'd also love to know the answer to this ! :-) And, in general, can the screen be turned to landscape mode for media consumption and photos/videos, or is the KEYone screen limited/"locked" to portrait mode all the time, like the Classic and Passport ??
Kevin can you please do a video of the Android N Messages App and what Emojis it has on the KEYone, I'm trying to find out because my Daughter wants one if the emojis are better than Marshmallow. She's only 15 so to her that's all that matters lol. please let me know.
Jakub Bajurski Yes, you can, via Nougat's split/multi-screen capability. I have that feature on my Samsung Note 5 (only running Marshmallow) thanks to Touchwiz and, even though I don't use it often, it's indeed nice to know that it's there for those times I desire it.
I've shared my verdict a lot. I've been loving it!! You should go listen to this podcast - spend a lot of time on it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bWAvskspnTQ.html
Wish the KEYONE was brighter though. Honestly, my experience with the passport has been great in terms of using the 3 row keyboard. Only problem is when I updated it to 10.3.3 n the phone started freezing one in a while. Other than that I wouldn't mind the passport being my last phone. It's just so great. Well a knew passport would be awesome. One that runs android apps better. Nonetheless, the Keyone seems like the next passport.
Like how I arrange my homescreen? Not for me... I always optimize my homescreen the same way. Pure black wallpaper, most used apps at bottom (usually messaging and social), then have my go to folders all on homescreen).
CrackBerry Kevin, I do the same as you with my home screen. On the other hand, I've fallen in love with the KEYone without even touching it. I've finally found a replacement for my BlackBerry Passport Silver Edition. I can't wait to put my hands on it. Thanks Kevin for this video.
This phone is really only for BlackBerry people.I bought this phone because I craved the look (sleek dark business design) and feel (actual hardware keyboard) and experience (HUB and battery life) that only a BlackBerry phone can give. Other phones have much more, no question. But for those of us from the PDA era who wanted our "Palm Pilots" to become something more, something we could use as an actual communication device and business (item) manager as well, BlackBerry was that, and is now again. This phone is not for the 15-30 yr old market. It is for the 30, 40, 50 something guy or gal who is enmeshed in the responsibilities of life, the rat race if you will.... and primarily is concerned with managing their work and adult life interests....oh yeah - and who "just needs to get SH!T done!" Best part about BlackBerry's approach to this new phone is, they are not pretending to draw in any other market but the one who has been with them for years and whom has been waiting for their re-emergence once again on the smartphone market. Android OS made this possible and it is the perfect marriage of the BB hardware with the Android OS.Very happy with my BBK1.This is not an iPhone, not a Galaxy, none of those. This is a BlackBerry. GREAT REVIEW!
