Actually, The collapsed dorsal fins are caused by being on the surface so much. Because the fins are made of cartilage and not bones and fins are very heavy, so being on the surface so much causes them to collapse. Its not because of depression or malnutrition, its because of gravity.

@@marsidae I second that. It happens in the wild too most commonly in the killer whale population in South Africa (which are known to hunt great white sharks). 2 males who have hunted great whites together as a team have collapsed dorsal fins.

TheLennyLegoShow Yes you are correct. Trua's father was called Taku who unexpectedly died in 2007 from pneumonia. Tilikum has effectively become a father figure for Trua despite being his grandfather.

That's correct. Animal captivity is not unique to Sea World it exists in those facilities which you mentioned too. You should rest your energy on being sick with individuals in society being advocates for animal freedom, and examine the real issue which the movie has addressed. What is the other side your speaking of? A bunch of humans making money of the isolation of innocent animals. Abduction of animals. Animal abuse… Judgement is ignorance, and the movie displays many sides of this industry which make it authentic opinion.

cheetahspott Abduction of animals? We don't do that anymore sea world breeds it's whales. Sea world has also rescued sea-life and brought them back into the ocean. What makes you think these whales get no stimulus are you a whale behaviorist?? Just because you watch a 90 minute documentary that is completely one sided and meant to make box office hits doesn't make you a whale advocate. Do your research. Sea world treats these whales with the best care possible, they go above and beyond to make the environment stimulating and the whales healthy. Black-fish is full of lies. For example they showed a man with a bloody face and made the audience presume it was from an orca when in-fact he just walked into a screen. This movie is designed to make you FEEL and not THINK. You say judgment is ignorance yet you base your opinions entirely on a MOVIE!!! & you say it shows many sides of the industry??? Not at all. Do your research for goodness sake and don't think you know what your talking about just because you watched a documentary who's job was to make a good dramatic watch by bashing sea world.

cheetahspott BTW, the orca's that are bred at sea world do contribute to more than the corporations bank account. Most kids would never have the chance to see or learn about such animals if it weren't for places like sea-world. When they are up close with these orcas it inspires a sense of great interest and love for them. This goes to work towards the whales in future generations to come by raising awareness and could benefit the survival of the entire species! Also, there is NO evidence that the whales are going crazy. Just because there were attacks on humans you think it's like a torture chamber for these whales? These are wild predatory creatures for Christ sakes! Of course attacks are a likely scenario. Elephants kill people, lions kill people, it happens! The movie claims it never happened in the wild but what they don't say are the facts, the numbers. Trainers swim with orcas thousands of times every year. In the wild we can only assume how many people swim with orcas but I bet it isn't even 10 to 10,000. There is always risk at sea world but I think the numbers are pretty good. If people swam with wild orcas as much as they did at sea world I bet the numbers would be flipped around. You are not a behavioral specialist and you sure as hell are not looking at both sides to this because it is absolutely NOT shown in your little documentary. "judgment is ignorance" You got that right. Shame all it takes is a movie in order for you to base your opinions, and with black-fish no wonder you're so bitter towards sea-world.

cheetahspott Oh and the "other side" you think you saw in the movie, why didn't they talk about the whales that were in open ocean pens that leave the pens and actually come BACK. Why don't they tell you how much staff and how much care they put into these animals. The number of staff and level of care that is carried out at sea world is astonishing! If this movie showed both sides...well... it would have showed both sides!!!

In truth the collapse is due to greater amount of time spent out of the water could cause over heating to the collagen in the ambient air. The biggest contributor is the dorsal fin lacks support from water pressure. It has nothing to do with the orca's health. The rest get slaughtered horrifically but the meat is poisonous as it contains kwik/lead/radiation/industrial waste, we have witnessed them dumping bodies out at sea now they have a new trick... Saying it is tuna in a tin and selling it to food chains across the world.. So every time people but a ticket to say sea world taiji keeps going as there is always a need for more dolphins

Watch THE COVE...they just started doing this we caught them.. Peta/jaza/waza can do nothing nor can we as cove guardians as we are end ther deported and banned for five years or get put in jail for five years or more so we document and film each drive hunt and photograph it, plus the taiji whale museum that is holding three albino dolphins capture there.. One is to be released into a sea pen we are now fighting for her two brothers...
