I did some quick calculations converting KWH - litres - MPG. If your car does an average 40MPG then at .70p per KWh you are paying the same to charge your EV as you would pay for unleaded fuel. They REALLY don't want to lose out on their profits do they! I pay .30p per KWh charging at home which I worked out is exactly half the cost of using unleaded fuel.

@jonwragg3822

And I think you are underestimating. I reckon my old diesel Volvo cost me 16p/kWh. Equate that back to an EV doing 4kWh, that’s 64p/KWh. My ID3 tells me via the lieometer that I get 4.2kWh in warm weather, and as little as 2.9kWh, so Osprey etc charging 69p to 79p means that charging away from home not cost effective. If you don’t have a choice then getting an EV is not a sensible alternative to a petrol car if cost is your only driver. I think Osprey, Gridserve, InstaVolt etc are all take the p**s out of their customers and laughing all the way to their private jets.

Tesla supercharging is currently 24p - 45p. Not all EVs are equal, Teslas are pretty much always cheaper to run per mile for fuel. Whether you like it or not, Tesla has a charging advantage that makes ICE vehicles expensive.@@jonwragg3822

@peterensinger1770
@peterensinger1770 Год назад
Dave, the reason for the thick heavy cable is quite simply the amount of current that the cable has to carry 150Kw @400v =375 Amps. To carry that amount of current requires a thick cable. copper cables at that sort of size are going to be heavy and not as flexible as the cable on your home charger.
@davetakesiton
@davetakesiton Год назад
I use Tesla superchargers and they are 250kW and the cables really light and flexible, no springs or supports needed. That’s 66% more current in a lighter cable. Strange

Who says the 'electric' goes through the cable? 😮
@tryhardfpv5351
@tryhardfpv5351 11 месяцев назад
Correct, the Tesla cables have liquid cooling. A big problem with other charger manufacturers seems to be that their implementation of liquid cooling isn't as reliable so if the pumps fail the charger drops from up to 350kw down to about 40kw due to the smaller cable size so when it's a lower power charger they opt for the fatter cable just for simplicity, cost and reliability. Convenience goes out the window. The choice is a thin cable that probably doesn't work or a fat cable that works more often but is a chore to handle.

Keep up the good work! Your analyses are always worth watching. One region that could do with highlighting is the M25. Large numbers of vehicles use the M25 every day and the charging options are very poor. There are very few chargepoints on the northern, western and southern sections and they are very busy, especially during peak times. This was true of the eastern section until Gridserve put in a bank of high-speed and a bank of medium-speed chargepoints at Thurrock. However the access from the northbound M25 at Thurrock is prone to gridlock. I note the reference to Gridserve installing chargepoints at Clacket Lane and their recent upgrade to Pease Pottage on the M23. When coupled with the upcoming Gridserve electric forecourt at Gatwick this may fix the southern M25 problem but that doesn't fix the other half of the M25. All this is compounded with the lack of sufficient charging options on the M40 south of Banbury, the M1 south of Milton Keynes, the M4 east of Reading and anywhere on the M3.
@gslongdistance
@gslongdistance Год назад
M25 for sure! The obvious spot is South Mimms Services a J23. There is a TSC but not open to all cars, and probably the busiest TCS in the country. Expansion options might be limited here as the services is already overcrowded with no parking most of the time. There is an ongoing dispute over a new Services at J20 (Kings Langley) with planning including a huge new Tesla SC hub as well as Gridserve, but local objections to this project has stalled it for a few years now and the last I’ve heard is it might have been shelved.

Seconded. When on the SW M25, Ionity at Cobham (between junctions 9 and 10) has been dependable for me. Edit: and Kia Charge membership gives a hefty discount from 74 to 59 p/kWh. One of the few cases that it's worthwhile for me.

Most BEV charging I have been to recently is used as premier EV parking. Went to a garden center the other day 10BEVs parked in the convenient close to the door EV chargers . Not one car plugged in and charging. It’s the same at most supermarkets I go to.

In Scotland it’s essential to have the RFID card as the mobile phone coverage in the Highlands and Islands can be hit and miss - I live on the northern edge of the Central Belt 25 miles north of Glasgow and the local CPS units won’t activate on the app because the data signal is too weak, some networks are better than others so apply for your RFID card in plenty of time before venturing into the CPS area! Most Tesla chargers are destination chargers and once north of Perth the influence of CPS and it’s 50kW chargers at 35pkw has scared off all the big companies, they just won’t compete with CPS. I draw attention to Annan in Scotland. must be 10 chargers been there since last year yet still not turned on. there in the car park were there is one very old charger at swimming pool. we should always be informed on price before charging starts. there should never be 1 or 2 chargers at a place. even 4 quickly fill up and cause queues and there is no way to tell a charge company info like i came to the charger and its full so going some were else. or ways to tell you your car is almost and now fully charged messages to customers. since charge starts when plugging in may not be were they stay and so you were told it will take x and it really takes y.

I was there yesterday and all existing superchargers were available. First time in 3 years I've ever had to wait, probably for around 3 minutes. When I came back there were about 6 cars waiting. 3 Gridserve units were available though, so no idea why the Teslas were queuing for so long, I wouldn't have waited longer than 5 minutes, even to save money as Tesla are probably around half the price.

@Brian-om2hh

How do you feel, having been totally misinformed? Thatcham, the UK based road safety and crash testing organisation, carried out a study on car fires, using globally sourced data. The study showed there were 1529.9 fires per 100'000 ICE cars, and 25.4 fires per 100'000 electric cars. Like I said, you're yet another victim of the sometimes hysterical misinformation surrounding electric cars...... And Thatcham aren't some back street bum outfit. They are the organisation who crash tested the car you drive, and awarded it it's Euro NCAP safety rating. Your car alarm also has a Thatcham rating..... Statistically, your ICE car is around 60 times *more* likely to catch fire......In fact around 160'000 ICE cars *do* catch fire each year in the US......

I'm in Canada where 92% of our electricity is produce by clean, reliable, renewable and inexpensive Hydro. Tesla with their easy to handle connector has the lions share of the chargers. They are very reliable and numerous. Other competitors are changing over to the Tesla type chargers. They are not as numerous as Tesla's and much less reliable. Most EV owners charge at home.

No BS charging review, just whats needed, Ive done 135,000 uk miles in 10 years of Tesla P85 Model S ownership, seen it all from day 1. Depended on Ecotricity, used Chademo to type 2 Free as the phone app not working and obviously still running free for life of Tesla Superchargers, get home and plug into solar 10 to 20 miles a day free....whats not to like? Rip off kW prices 50p+. When Tesla rolls out for everyone the completion will hot up. Locally (Newcastle under Lyme) Tesla is doubling up stalls 8 to 16 before opening up as they know the usage.......not difficult is it to get 24/7 uptime....Tesla can do it.

Sorry but this pricing and Max Charging capacities is a scam , max price for KWH that will never be used .... eg I have a eC4 max charge rate quoted at 100Kwh over the last year I noted my real charge rate ... max was 74Kwh for 30 seconds . Usual charge rate was 47Kwh ... So we are paying for high capacity but using low Kwh capacity ... 50 Kwh capacity is low priced , 175 and 300 kWh charge rate is very expensive Therefore I don't need or can afford 300Kwh rate as my car charges under 50 kWh Please understand sometimes you can not drive around looking for cheap chargers
@davetakesiton

Hi Tom might be a misunderstanding but almost all charger networks cost the same price for 50kW as 350kW Tesla IONITY, InstaVolt Osprey, Gridserve, so no scam at all. See my video on charging maximum speed to tell you why you only get 70kW I would not expect more unless you change the way you charge, don’t blame the chargers

@@foppo100 I doubt it, because the Government rakes in £35 billion per year from the UK motorist. Why might they want to see an end to what is one of their most reliable tax income streams? And what other taxes would need to rise to make up the tax shortfall? And what about the millions of lost jobs? There would be 800'000 jobs gone in the UK car making industry alone, plus jobs lost at car dealerships, oil refineries, petrol stations, tanker drivers, garage workshops, the AA and RAC, car body repair workshops, tyre fitting depots, places like Halfords, local authority road repair crews etc etc. And you thought it was just a question of getting rid of cars? How would having a further 3 to 4 million people out of work, offer the Government any sort of advantages or benefits?

EVs are a scam. EVs sole purpose is to drive up the cost of vehicles. Average EV is 62k. Average gas vehicle is 40k. And government is forcing manufacturers to make EVs and not invest in gas vehicles so the prices will continue to rise. EVs are worse for the environment as they require you to destroy the earth to mine for the metals needed in batteries. EVs don't reduce carbon emissions until you drive over 100k miles. If we all drove an EV it would only drop carbon emissions by 0.4% EVs also require a compromise in driving. They can't tow. They do horrible at highway speeds as they lose efficiency. And they're awful in inclement weather like wind or cold. EVs are a scam.....and thats before the repair bill hits because repairs increase cost of ownership way over gas equivalents.

With the possible exception of retail price, and the legislation to ban ICE cars from 2030/2035, all you say is complete rubbish. Rather than rely on what randoms on the internet say, and then re-spout it, do some research for yourself. What would be very useful is if you could point to a reputable source(s) for all your points so we can see for ourselves - perhaps we'll be surprised and find you are right.
