Great review, it's a really nice app, I think better than Filmic Pro, which went to a subscriber model recently. Is that the River Thames in the background?

This App made me get the new iPhone 15 Pro and a 15 Pro Max with great trade-ins my provider offered. I got both for less than the price of one. Also this App automatically generates Proxy files. Then I directly record to external storage via the usb c port. You can do a thumb drive, SD card, or SSD drive and forget about cloud storage. It also does not write to your Photos unless you say so. Lots of on board storage saved. Also you can program the action button to launch this App. For me the generation of proxies is a time saver and streamlines the work flow. Oh - yes it does run on the iPad also if you do not have an iPhone. This App is a game changer for sure and the results are amazing. Free is the cherry on top of the Sundae that Blackmagic has provided use :). 👍👍👍

As always great video. Silly question. How do you go back to full auto for shutter? ( I.e blue “a” next to it ) The only way I found is to go to settings and “ reset camera “ Once you change to 1/48 for example . It stays in this locked position . I see there is an auto on/ off for the WB etc . But can’t see it for the shutter speed Is it me ? Or a bug? Cheere

Thanks for the feedback! To switch, click on shutter. Then to the eight press the lock to unlock it, then the 3 button from the top, below auto white balance. You’ll get the auto option there. If stuck, send me a DM over social media or email and I send you a video for it 👍👍

very interesting (like all your videos). Can you tell us if the isteady M6 switches are compatible with the DaVinci program? on filmic pro they were fully functional... it would be interesting to know if they are the same in this new free app.

You do get remote on/off trigger. I don’t really use anything else, i always control the app manually… but as far as I am aware, no focus/zoom control, the question is, do you need it?

Thanks for the great review on this. I was looking at this the other day and I am surprised why I didn’t see the option for 16x9 aspect ratio. Closest I got to is 1.85:1 which translates to 16.65x9. Am I missing something here?

Found it. I see that 16x9 is the default. If you want other aspect ratios then you have to chose that menu otherwise set that menu to off state.

The only reason I still need Filmic Pro (legacy) is the function to use an iPad as a Remote/Monitor. Unfortunately that feature broke with iOS 17. I wish Blackmagic had this.

Yes, I loved filmic remote and used it myself too. I’d love for the BM app to do it. But this is a first gen app and all I can hope is that as they work on it and develop it, this will bring one of the features they include… It would be amazing…

I have Galaxy 22 and used Filmi Pro legacy version(6). Did not buy a newer version. and it was a great video. I don't have a new one. One I have is an iPhone SE as a secondary phone with another number. Can't afford 15pro max, which is almost or more than 2000$ in Canada. with taxes 2300$

Does it work with the hohem 6 gimbal as well as with other gimbals? Forgive me, I'm new to this style of shooting and purchased a Hohem gimbal yesterday.

I use this app always when I use the hohem gimbals. I have noticed that the Hohem joy app has been improved and now has more frame rates, better layout and feel, but I usually do settings in the joy app, and film with the blackmagic app

With the Black Magic Design cloud you can have mutable Iphone's shooting full 4K video with proxies to the same cloud file and mutable editors can use the cloud file proxies and message each shooter what he needs from there angle in real time. Black Magic Design has raised the bar for event or music video shooting with mutable Iphone shooters and in the future mutable Camera's. This is the testing ground of a service that will be added to all Black Magic camera's in the future. Buckle up this is going to change how we create content !

I couldn’t agree more. BM is giving us a pretty impressive tool. You can get proxies uploaded and synced right after filming while you travel. Amazing

Doesn't look like this can swap lenses while recording, i.e., start with the 5x lens then go lower. iOS supports this, Black Magic does not?

There will be some limitations due to the fact Apple does not release the full EPK to developers. For instance, if I need to do something where I need The stabilisation to be on point, and I need to real time preview, the default camera app still gives you the best results because Apple won’t allow 3rd party developers to access the core functionality. The same goes for cinematic mode. You just need to make that decision yourself:… but for a first generation app, it is fantastic…

That looks odd!! I don’t know! Have you tried deleting the app and reinstalling? Maybe something weird happened when it got installed… Also, have you updated to iOS 17? It works like a charm…

I don't think you can. It is not meant to. The LUT you apply to the footage is for reference viewing. You can then easily apply the same LUT to the footage in your edit program and it will look exactly as it look on your phone... That's the theory behind providing a LUT upload... Unless someone else here knows something about the app that I don't know...

Just as you use any other 3rd party camera app. But native integration is not possible, that is something you only get using the DJI app…

Unfortunately, no, it is video only as the manufacturer sells video cameras only and that is the main objective, to get people into their ecosystem and eventually buy any of their cameras. Kinda makes sense... You don't have to buy anything, but it is a sales strategy..

Cinematic mode is locked by Apple to their app and FCP and imovie editing apps and they won’t release the EPK for companies to implement it. That includes also software companies. It is just the way it is, unfortunately…

I am getting my 15 pro max next week but I can only assume how much better it will be. And I will do some videos with it too for content creators and indie filmmakers. But the app is really, good!

Terrible UI. Everything is super small and not visible at all in a bright environment.

Really? I did not experience that at all. But I guess you can never please everybody.... I can see why some areas might be hard to see in a bright day, like the top menu/option display bar where the TC is, it can be a bit washed out in daylight, nothing you can't solve by having a bit of your finger or hand over the lens and darkening to see better the settings. But as a whole, I like it. It is not perfect, but if they got it this good in the first generation, wait until they refine the UI and UX!!

I can't wait to get my 15 pro max and test the Log recording onto an external drive and whether it makes it easier to blend with cameras like Canon, etc. That would be very helpful in many situations...

Maybe. But Blackmagic is a juggernaut compared to all other 3rd party camera app developers. BM want to sell cloud space and provide value to people who buy their products so they continue to buy them. Whether cameras, editing software, switches, and so on. I don’t think the money people would pay for the app would make a dent in their bottom line. I think it will remain free because they are not interested in making money from the app, but through the services associated or integrated within the app. The app is just a means to an end. But time will tell!!

Fair point, but why on earth anyone would want to use proress 4444 on an iphone... Maybe a very, very few tiny number of people. The storage requirements are insane, and let's face it, it is an iPhone, nit a high-end camera.... You have a valid point but I don't think many people would actually use 4444....

I would imagine they will, the issue is there in only one iOS and one manufacturer of apple phones. There are many different flavours if Android with many manufacturers tweaking the code to suit their needs. That makes it difficult to have a uniform platform. It is easy on iOS because it is always the same code structure and standards. Plus, IOS is more robust and reliable in terms of syncing image and sound… but yes, I really hope they release one soon…

@@SamuelSotiega i think apps don't have to be coded differently for different manufacturers, they are made for base OS which every manufacturer uses. but lets see, because lumafusion was initially for iOS then they released for android without any restrictions except the hardware. or version of Android.

really sucks. it's really a bad app. you can not stop it's producing lots of proxies garbage, you can not only put your clips to photos. its really wasting time and storage

You can set things up in the media section. You can put the clips in the photos, also set it up in the media settings. For a first gen app I think it does a really good job!

there will be a copy on photos and a copy on in-app directory. plus that proxies files. really watesd space app ,not that effeicency @@SamuelSotiega
