We review the Blackmagic Design Smart Videohub 40x40, explain how we use it and why it is one of the best purchases a production company can make.
We rack mounted the smart videohub in our production truck. We use the truck primarily for live streaming but it makes a great mobile control room and video village for Live to tape and traditional productions. We use the truck to handle remote broadcasts, corporate videos, news correspondence, live streaming as well as using hardware switchers (ATEM) and software switchers (Vmix) so it has to have an agile setup. Basically we can't be rewiring the van every time we have a different production need. It has to be able to handle anything at anytime. The Smart videohub has been an integral piece of making that happen.
Adding the smart video hub to our production pipeline has not only made the physical process of setting up a show more efficient but it has made the switching process more nimble. We all have had the last second additions and curveballs our clients throw at us rewiring or rerouting and patching our perfectly laid out program.
