Very thoughtful review, guys. Most companies would be delighted to have brought out Resolve 19 and just one of the 'minor' items of broadcast / streaming hardware...the team at Blackmagic Design truly is a one-off! Without exception, these are phenomenal products at their price point; Grant Petty is a huge force for good in the industry!

I haven’t been this excited about a camera since the A1. BMD just threw a few haymakers at every other camera company. Legendary gear drop!

A smart move would be a blackmagic pyxis body with the 12k new sensor without all that connectivity options and completely without screen for half the price. In case they can fit that sensor in that body for a ok price, im pretty sure there would be a lot of one man bend cinematographers buying it. The new ursa is great but is a true set camera that one would rent and the pyxis is interesting package but that sensor is a bit outdated.. we need something in between. Camera that can be used to shot narrative/ documentary with a small (or no) crew with great performance

I agree 100%. With the Komodo price drop and the Canon C80/ C400 launch the $6,000-$8,000 camera market is heating up. I am looking for a new camera in this range. I am hoping that Sony and BlackMagic Design will soon offer something in this range. I am hoping that that Blackmagic will put this sensor in in the smaller box body but with built in NDs.

When I first saw the new camera. It reminded me of the original URSA to an extent because of the operator side. It seems they went back to the original and said what can we do to bring those features and update to our 12k mini pro line because that is the one that sky rocketed us. And now we have the URSA Cine. Excited to get my hands on it next week at NAB!

$15,000 is a bad price region. Too expensive for most independents to outright purchase, but too cheap for the rental market. For larger productions, camera rental is often a fraction of 1% of the overall budget. When given the choice between this untested model and an Arri, most larger production will rent the Arri, and it won't meaningfully impact their budget. Suspect these same pricing errors led to Red being sold. Their cameras were priced largely into the rental market, and in that market, they couldn't compete with Arri.

As context: This camera is made for VR, the market is screaming for exactly this, and BMD is a very close partner with Apple. Vision Pro needs this resolution, even 12K is not enough.

Hopefully this breathes new life into the seriously improved (over several huge firmware updates) original 12K. It’s practically a different camera from launch and it’s crazy how little fanfare it’s gained.

Correction: The baseplate that is included has BOTH 19MM and 15MM rail mounts.

has it got 16bit raw? overall, It's pretty much covering all the short falling of other cameras, which makes a very versatile dream camera for both broadcast and film work, but not sure the pricing is right i felt they need one more line in-between of 6k and 12k, with price range about $6-8k by compromising some features like s35 sensor, 8k and with one filpout screen, aiming more towards non narrative filmmakers. 1. Full gate in full frame, good for anamorphic lens and shallow depth. 2. 16 stops of dynamic range in 12k, very rare either you get hires or better dynamic range in most cameras. 3. 240 fps in raw. 4. Two screens.

I downloaded the demo footage from the Blackmagic website. It seems like the new 12k Cine has approximately 1-1.5 usable DR when compared to the current Ursa 12k.

just wait for an year. the price of Cine Ursa will be brought down from 15K to 10K. Just like Ursa 12k went from 10k to 6k.

“Just Say No To Proprietary Media!” - This camera needs is a CF Express Type C 4.0 card slot. Type C offers a four-lane PCIe Gen4 interface with up to 8 GB/s data rate. This camera maxes out at 4 GB/s, a Type C exceeds this cameras needs.

One thing that really bugs me with the discussion of resolution in these interviews and even Blackmagic’s responses to those questions: Yes 12k and even more so 17k seems ridiculous and niche, but with these sensors you can record in 8k, 6k, and 4k in BRAW without a crop making it incredibly versatile.

The media used 4X normal M2 NVME SSDs in RAID0. I hope BMD does open this up, and sells empty modules for cheap DIY storage upgrades.

16 stops of dynamic range... I can't wait until you test this measure. If it's true or even close, I'm going to be sooo delighted! The lack of dynamic range on Blackmagic camera has always given me reservations. So happy to see Blackmagic going so hard on these new cameras. Thank you CineD for being one of the first to cover!

Based on my gut reaction to the demo footage they showed, there seems to be a lot more latitude in the image than has been typical of BM. Probably a reliable 14 stops is my first look guess.

@@12yfilms I mean for uncontrollable environment sure, but all you need to do is higher band ISO for gamma curve to save highlights and let everything fall where it falls. Unless you are shooting against windows inside, I cant see the problem. You can dig out the shadows a bit and add NR if required.

Rolling shutter performance is a big thing., I'll be interested to see how the shutter goes at the lower 4K res. This ability to now go no crop lower res faster chip will bring into a nice working spec for filmic results. If that change works it will bring it the URSA into competition with Alexa Mini/Amira were the chip is fast enough to negate rolling shutter. 4K is more than enough res for a majority of situations.

Je suis les tests caméras de CineD depuis de nombreuses années, J’attends votre test avec impatience. Cette caméra est pour moi révolutionnaire, je suis juste un peu déçu qu’il n’ai pas réussi à conserver la taille de l’URSA g2. Également dommage qu’il propose pas de 240fps en 4K ou 5k 17/9eme alors qu’il donne du 240 en 8k 2:4:1 , C’est la même chose avec quelques pixels en moins sur les côtés J’ai hâte de savoir la dynamique utile de la caméra, la latitude, et les teste du Rolling shutter Merci à CinéD et merci aux Ingénieur de Black Magic pour cette merveilleuse création ! Et merci pour ce rêve qui est la caméra 65 mm !!! A Dream !!!

@@RandallMeredith Yeah, that is kinda sad. I would image its just not ready yet, same with IBIS. Or AF. But BMD does design their products with long term roadmaps in mind, so i think the next upgrade to this Box platform will come when they have an eND solution ready that would work with IBIS. IMO covid did mess up the development tiime of many products, and they are only now catching up. At this point i am pretty confident in BMDs future, and i think they will get there next year or so.

unfortunately, I only saw ONE video connector. Only one SDI port. So any monitor or wireless solution needs to loop that signal. Also that on/off switch is at a weird place. I just hope smallrig and tilta will come up with some great accessories to power it with vmount.

Photosites are still too small and I’m sure the rolling shutter performance won’t be great. The fist 12K was pretty trash.

this Ursa Cine suffers from horrible industrial design. Nobody needs a 1980’s camcorder flip screen on a professional camera and we sure as heck don’t need a bulky proprietary media that’s slower than a CF Express B or C card.

The first shot of the Ursa Cine presentation film was supposedly filmed with this camera and if it was, it looks like this sensor will have a lot of problems with the rolling shutter/readout speed. If it's not from encoding for the net, this shot is a bad omen... When you're at the Blackmagic stand, can you do a quick pan and show the image (it could even be at 8k)? Very interesting and finally a Blackmagic camera with an apparently almost perfect design and portions (except the original BMPCC) seems to be the PYXIS 6K. $3K?? Why didn't they use the same design (but bigger) of this camera at Ursa Cine?

No autofocus or stabilization… at that price point?!?!?! I have the first 12K & can upgrade it to full frame with Lucadapter in EF. The main good thing I am seeing is the 16 stops DR, otherwise not seeing a reason to upgrade

Have you seen arri with autofocus? Or some of the Red? The only one is the komodo, the burano also has now autofocus but blackmagic seems not to be interested on this now
