I rented the Blackmagic Designs URSA MINI Pro 12k from vivacamera.ca/ to test out on a project and see if it would be a good addition to style of work.

Thank you Brian for doing this camera review. I'm seriously looking at pulling the trigger on the URSA 12K. Frankly, I don't think the URSA 12K Mini Pro has had a fair shake in that very few critical reviews have been done on this particular camera. There are many more reviews on the 6K family of BMD cameras. Apart from your recent review of the URSA 12K, CVP out of England is the only other critical review of this fascinating camera I have seen. From what my eyes are telling me from watching your footage, I'm not so impressed with the DZO contrast levels you were getting from your shoot. I hope you are not offended at me saying so, but I'm not a big fan of the aesthetic of shooting against the sun. This kind of shot is very iffy unless you have a punchy, high contrast lens like the big Fujinon Primista Zoom, or Arri series of just released Zeiss Super Speeds, or the Cooke Cinetal lenses. For one thing, I seriously doubt if the DZO is giving you anything in resolution beyond 8K ? 🤔 If you do future proof your shooting with 12K acquisition, then you want to make sure you have a lens on the URSA 12K capable of pulling down that much resolution. Right now, there are about five cinema lenses capable of 12K resolution to the outer edges. Only one of these Cinema lenses is even full frame capable. The new Ziess Arri lenses are full frame ready. The short list of Super 35 coverage lenses safe for 12K are the Canon 50 x 1000 mm micro zoom, the Fujinon Primista Zoom, Ziess Super Speeds, and the Cooke Cinetals. I don't care about auto focus, or slow motion. I shoot everything as Cinema ready @ true 24.00p. I'm not interested in fractional frame rates, unless I'm shooting something for television. I treat 4K as strictly a delivery format, so 8K acquisition is probably the sweet spot on the URSA 12K right now.

I think the issue you were having with the backlighting in 4k 240fps has a lot more to do with the DZO zooms they are notorious for lots of IQ issues. Yea they're sharp, but that low price sacrifices a lot of other features.

In the future you will have your double iso, but useless 18k of resolution. (?) This camera would had been ideal with only 6k, double iso, and all the same features it already has. Compared with the FX6 and the Komodo, I love that it shoots very high frame rates for the budget, no crops and raw. The previous Ursa needed even more light for exposure, this one is at a similar level I believe the Komodo is.

Thanks for this review, I was considering to either purchase the pocket 6k pro or the ursa, however, I might just rent the ursa first to get a feel out of it

Hi Just Lens Inc! I always think its best to rent a camera first to try it out when making a big investment. I know some retailers that do both sales and rentals will sometimes give a cost of a one day rental back if you end up purchasing the product. Maybe something to look into. Thanks

@@BrianHunt thanks Brian, will definitely take your advice on this. We got a project coming up and we are considering to rent the pocket 6k pro first to see how it works. Totally different flow from our norm but worth the try.
