EDIT - The 12K has had a huge price cut, it is now £4469 (Ex VAT)!! Let us know your thoughts on the 12K below and I believe RU-vid is still processing the video to 8K!! Hopefully, it will be done soon.
Hey ! Great. Would love at least to know if you think it's a reliable camera. Do you think professionally, it can handles documentary shooting in a cold humid forest with a little rain ? Was considering going for a Mavo Edge. But maybe this could be the go to camera. I'll keep my X-T3 for Bcam and consider in buying a second for Ccam (shooting timelapse or just small close animals possibility !)
Others have said it, but I'll say it too. This is hands down the best, most well thought out, and comprehensive review of this camera and it's features that I've seen. You guys did a great job with this, and that level of quality keeps me coming back to the channel.
This was well worth the wait. I'm 2 minutes in and already saw the best UMP 12K footage on the internet. Got a snack and ready to get into this! Thanks for your work.
Thanks for the thorough review. The footage is definitely impressive. Thanks for taking a look at post-production as well. Keep up the excellent reviews. I've been subscribed to your channel for a while, but now I'm turning on notifications so I don't miss any videos from CVP.
Shot a commercial yesterday on this camera. Felt confident with the functioning of the camera because of your valuable insights. Thnk u for the Video. I shot on 8K 5:1 bitrate @25 fps However while shooting on 60fps and above my ssd card was crashing. I had to bring down the bitrate/quality or resolution for smooth recording.
Great review! So much effort put into it. Remember marveling over a DVD image for the first time? This camera produces 230 (Two hundred and thirty) times as many pixels.
Thanks so much for the info guys. Great, thorough and honest review as always. This is why we watch and why we buy from you. Thanks also for pointing out the notorious 'out of gpu memory's bug in Resolve. This issue is intensely problematic as an editor and colourist. BM have been aware of it for several years and have never fixed it. It occurs when editing 6k or even 4k footage from a variety of cameras, and completely prevents use of noise reduction features on many systems. Even with 6gb of GPU memory. Hopefully this review will be taken as feedback by BM.
I'm really glad you mentioned this. Your comment taught me a lot about GPUs and editing. I've just got into the world of proxies and managing GPU use across my system's apps while editing, but it's great to know what lies beyond so I can plan ahead.
One year on this camera... it's a monster... looks are similar to Vraptor and Arri mini LF... but with better interface and insane high speed capability 🤣👌
Wow this review was so well put together and thanks for taking the time to do the excel Jake. I think BM have got their work cut out by entering the £10k pricepoint - other manufacteres have been in this space for longer and have a better understanding of the £10k customer. C300 MK III/FX6 for me offer a much better package for a pro user - also one thing not really mentioned is the warranty - a 1 year warranty for this type of camera is no good - makes it a risky proposition. Also the moire issue looks worse than on the 4.6k models. Also the highlight rolloff doesn't look great from footage I've seen even with Gen 5 applied and using AcesCCT. I'm still going to get one though because I'm a BM user and completely mad.
Remarkable efforts to make complete and detailed review, kudos to the team specially to jake.i hope jake will update his PC with 3rd zen Ryzen near soon. I enjoyed the complete video.
Hi, I rewatching this review during my workout (haaaa the lockdown life) and I'd like to had something : ONE CCD sensor did have full RGB readout without a prism. The Sony CCD S35 Sensor featured in the F35 and Panavision Genesis did actually use an RGB Triad kinda similar to what Blackmagic is doing here but at a smaller resolution (5K-ish by 3K-ish to owersample to 1080p full RGB image) and without the clear photosites.
Thank you so much CVP for all this information, and especially the bitrate excel breakdown! I was confused at what type of media will suit this camera and this really helps!
This camera it's so ahead of its time that people are afraid to buy it. Olso mad respect to the guys who made this video more like a movie, so much hard work & hours of editing.
Useful info that will come in handy when having to apply the characteristics of the camera in demanding situations. Thanks for the thoughtful presentation.
there is test footage that help the watcher download it...much appreciated..it would be awesome if there is a test footage for camera review in your next videos...top notch
I went from Ursa Pro to Ursa G2 to Pocket 6K's. I guess it's time to spend £9K. This camera looks absolutely crazy . In capable hands could make miracles (not mine obviously). I like the fact that shooting only raw. Aimed specifically
Wow so cool, I liked that too, unfortunately not many can afford such a great 🎥 I belong to it, but I am happy for everyone who moves creativity in life🙏
The custom filter array sounds great and very promising in terms of color performance. Which is (along with highlight rollof and dr) what makes certain cameras stand out now that resolution is not an issue. The footage though does not sell the camera. The images despite being well shot and very detailed do not stand out as anything special. It seems like the type of image you get today from most cameras at this level. Obviously one has to test for himself though and i guess youtube compression is the great barrier. A very thorough review, keep them up.
Great Review! I wonder how the highest quality settings are to use, if there are no proper media available. Anyways, this camera is relatively affordable, but if you consider lenses, computers, storage and other accessories needed for making this camera useful, you quickly go into the 6-figure area. So be sure, you will not run out of funds...
I would love to see a comparison video between this and a whole bunch of other high-end cinema cameras, such as the RED V-Raptor, RED Komodo, and the ARRI ALEXA 35.
It looks great, but even tv stations are asking for 1080 deliverables still. When they update, i'll probably go to an 8k camera, but right now it feels like it's for something of a niche market.
People don't seem to understand how high resolution human eyes are. We still have yet to create a camera nearly as high resolution as a human eye. That's why we must continue to advance digital resolutions.
Speaking of Moire. According to Slashcam there are ways to prevent any kind of moire: - Avoid using Premiere - When working on a 4K rimeline also decode as 4K in debayer tab, decode as 8K on a 8K timeline.
36:04 Geforce cards will write the same info into the VRAM on all cards present in the system (so you'll end up with the limit no matter how many cards you have). If you want to expand your VRAM you'll need to use Quadro cards (or wait a year or two, since iirc something like that is in the making for consumer cards).
@@CVPTV No, you said that Resolve would not use the extra VRAM, but it is not a problem with Resolve. The issue is with NVLink on the Geforce cards as VRAM is mirrored and not added. This is not an issue that Blackmagic can solve, you just need more VRAM on a single card or you need Quadros that support pooling of VRAM.
The only thing I dislike about the camera is that instead of gaining one more stop of dynamic range they've reduced it. so Instead of giving us 16 we now have 14. Also would love to see this type of camera with a stabilized sensor.
Watching this going, that lens is cool, I should probably pick that up...then I google and it's $43,000!!!! Son of a.... I guess I'll stick with my X series lenses, lol.
Amazing review, subscribed! I need help choosing between Ursa 12k, Red Komodo or waiting for new models... I love the image of the Komodo, but its specifications (framerate and cropfactor) hold me back. The Ursa is magnificent in this, but for more footage I see I can't see its image at the level of the Komodo. In addition to the form factor, and the weight of the camera... Help me please... Thanks!
Hi Guys, great review, am I missing something but I cannot seem to see the link to the database you created with all the possible data rates for each resolution? Thx.
That was brain full. I can already tell that despite the res benefits, I’ll probably be looking for something smaller with 8k60 and 4k240 12bit. So far 8k has been a fine resolution and I often use 4k HQ downsampled from 8k anyhow. That level of noise when under exposed along with the need for very pricey optics is also daunting, considering optimal lighting can be rare. Resolution is a bit overrated when compared with chroma depth, color science, dynamic range and shutter science. Plus the crops to 4k from 12k didn’t look super enticing to me. Black magic, although breaking barriers, has really upset a lot of videographers with their buggy software/gear, fixed pattern noise and poor support. I might be more likely to pickup a Nikon z9 over the BM12k but as a canon shooter I’ll be interested to see what the R1 or perhaps c70mk2 brings.
There is a whole section in the video talking about working with Resolve at 33:51, you can see our export settings there and it goes over some of the difficulties of exporting this footage! Jake
Have you guys tested out the newer OLPF version of the URSA 12K released 2023? I heard that it has less noise than the previous version. Thanks very much!
Hi, the review is - as always - perfectly structured and very informative. I just have a short question: can you please post links to the NVME and its case? Many thx!
I see some compression artifacts in between the shelves to the left behind you. See 43:06 for an example. Even in 1080p. RU-vid Compression? Resolve output?
RU-vid! The original export was a 500+ GB ProRes 422 HQ file that we then transcoded to h264 at 125Mbps for RU-vid upload. There is no artefact in the PTC on the original BRAW files. Jake
@@CVPTV Thank you - also for going into all the various color management options in Resolve. That's something I struggle with a lot and appreciate any insight gained from your videos.
I can't believe that cfast 2.0 is still so incredibly expensive, when m.2 ssds in a usb enclosure are way cheaper and sometimes even way faster, I don't see the reason cfast cards can't lower in price
Running out of VRAM with Davinci Resolve won't happen with an AMD GPU, it has something to do with CUDA/NVidia/Resolve memory handling. This article can tell you more www.slashcam.de/artikel/Test/AMD-XFX-Radeon-RX-5600-XT-Grafikkarte---Durchschnittliche-Mittelklasse.html It's and German, just use google translate or something similar.
Hello ! Thank you very much for your reviews they are just perfect ! Is till have a question though : on the black magic website its advertised UMP 12k has autofocus with compatible lenses. Do you have any idea if its good or not ? Is it focus tracking or only auto focus ? THX in advance !
Great in depth review! Does the U12K save DNG stills like the pockets do? Did you shoot your head shots with the Um12K? Great skin tones! can share lighting setup?
No it saves single BRAW frames. Yeah piece to camera was with the 12K. Lighting was a Nanlite Forza 500 camera right with a octa, large reflector camera left, Dedolight DLED-7 as edge light, Gemini 1x1 filling background and Nanlite tube light in background! Thanks for watching! Jake
