The EF mount is a real plus for those of us waiting to upgrade from the BMCC 2.5k EF.

I think the reason for the EF mount is that the flange distance allows Blackmagic to have all those big cooling slots. A shorter flange distance would not allow for those and the heat generated from the bigger sensor and higher CPU power used to process and store the high resolution stream needs to get out in some way.

My Canon glass is happy now whit this BIG problem. 😄

Been doing alot of reading. There is suppose to be a speed booster by a company called LucAdapter (I think)... also a plugin by another company to let you edit braw in premier.

EF mount is so widely used that I don’t think anyone should be fretting about BM falling in line with what high-end cine camera manufacturers have been doing for years. This is simply them saying: “hey, you should put big-boy lenses on our new big-boy camera.”

How are these "professionals" able to give review about the camera that they don't even own? I keep looking at the videos to see real footage and the real test but they all are going on and on about what's written on Blackmagic's website.

Ha, your bug is my feature. EF lens mount by default is exactly what I've wanted from a prosumer video camera, as that's where my lens investment is.

It would have been great to see it with an L-Mount, but I wonder if the partnership between Leica, Panasonic, and Sigma might have been an issue there. Also, and this is PURE speculation on my part, but I wonder if having that extra flange distance makes it easier to cool the system down depending on how they've used that extra internal space. 6K raw is a lot to process, but I might be totally off on that haha! Really interested to hear your take once you've got the camera in hand!

As someone with a full complement of EF-mount lenses, I'm glad BM did this. I'm sick of needing adapters to shoot video on Mirrorless cameras.

I am a canon shooter with a stack of glass so the 6K excites me! Will probably also continue with Prores as I primarily edit FCPX. I will order the 6K but also keep a 4K as back up/second camera. Great video, thanks

I'm confused by the mount concerns and by everyone saying it's easier to adapt to mirrorless - I use EF on my Ursa Mini pro and have never had issue adapting old vintage lenses and keeping full frame FOV w/ the magicbooster, etc. Everything that was recommended for and that I used on my mirrorless cams work on this one. Old c-mount lenses (though not FF), old minolta lenses, swirly bokeh lenses, helios, old 4x7 medium format lenses, etc. Magicbooster exists for Ursa Mini & Ursa Mini Pro cams which get FF FOV, so the same could be done here, possibly.

Mine is on the way and I am happy with the Canon EF mount as I have 9 L lenses and won't need the metabones adapter. BUT because I also have the 4k I can take advantage of the update. BTW I hope you update your BMPCC video; I will pay for an update!

Have you heard of or looked into the announced Magic Booster from LucAdapters for this camera? He says he can get it to an estimated 1.1x crop!! With 0.64 XL Metabones, the pocket 4K gets to 1.22x, so that’s really promising! And hey, maybe Metabones will make their own!

Were I to have the cash, the EF mount would put me off the 6K because I can't use my weird lenses. But that's not a problem. I'm not the intended market. The intended market is a more professional and dare I say it, more conventional, user. Are we forgetting that the 4K is hardly a poor camera?

Thanks Caleb. I have ordered the BMPCC 6K and hopefully it will arrive soon. When you do your review could you have a look at SSD's for us. Tom Antos had problems with frames dropping on his Samsung T5 SSD at 6K filming.

The EF mount is its biggest selling point I think, I have a lot of EF Glas. There is one negative on this camera I think, and that is Battery Life, so you need to buy a lot of Batteries, which is an good mitigation. A thing BM Could have done better is Autofocus, but Me Thinks that is Minor. Comparing it to the R6 from Canon when I Read the Specs Canon R6 - you need to buy an adapter for your EF Glas - it doesn't do RAW - its more expensive - only 4K - Price - Overheating issues? + Good AF + Full Frame BM6K - Battery life - AF + 6K + RAW + Price + EF Mount + No Heat issues

You don't even have the camera in hand??? complaining. Going Kinefinity route? Mavo 6k body alone is $7,999 plus just to get basic set will cost you $9,499 it will end up close to $14,758. I am saying this cause I have mayo 6k, where as for BMPCP6K is only $2500, come on.

Regarding the EF mount: BM is not a licensee of Canon (as much as I know) which means they reverse engineered the EF mount pins to make the EF lenses work with this 6K Camera. In order to make other lenses work out of the box or to create a BM adapters for the lenses you mentioned - they need to reverse engineer many of them and there aren't lots of docs about it. Perhaps the next version of this camera will support other lenses (after all, if you look at the camera closely, you'll see that most of it is just like the 4K, they replaced the board with the sensor and the front part, venting , and the firmware, everything else remains the same).

The firmware update will also finally bring controll on a gimbal, esecially focus controll. I think that a huge deal!

The mount choice is probably due to licensing. M43 is no good for 1.5x so choice may of been limited.

Using an SLR mount on a mirrorless body makes no sense... funny thing is, the Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro has a swappable mount system - it does F/EF/PL/B4

So many haters. This is a great review, and I agree; an interchangeable mount would have been an incredible feature. That said, if you're going with any fixed mount, EF is the way to go.

I see your point about braw being the only format for the larger resolutions but if u are shooting 6K why would u want to out put as pro ress anyway when braw has way more flexibility in post, the only other reason i could see is for files size differences. But i feel like it would defeat the point of shooting 6k with out that flexibility. Could just be me tho

I really like your reviews i really do. i've been following your channel for a long time now and i love your content. But just to be honest, don't you think you are actually being totally biased towards using EF-Mount because you are a user of Panasonic GH series. So that means you're implying that they should've gone for that. That is because you're actually using that yourself. Don't get me wrong but for normal consumers or you can say people who are on a tight budget, usually go with Canon. No matter what. So i assume majority of the people will definitely have Canon Lenses so it's a great choice to have as a EF-Mount in BMPCC6k.

The BMPCC 4K is almost impossible to get hold of in UK. There is no stock and waiting times at most retailers, or you can pay a big premium to get one sooner. I just wish BM had addressed the lack of 4K stock and ramped up production of those before releasing the 6K.

If you are going to test boosters on the 4K in the future, please factor in the new Metabones specifically for it, especially the 0.64X positive locking EF mount. Not only does it make it fullframe equivalent, it adds a cine locking mount.

As an FCPX user the biggest detraction for me is all the BRAW only modes. I have to hope (in vain?) that Apple will support BRAW in the next update or, even as a P4K owner, consider moving to Resolve. 6K may open up better post stabilization options but that may hinge on rolling shutter though.

Any idea where they get that sensor from? Even its no option for me because of the ef mount, i am curious to see the low light performance compared to the 4K. Is there any information out there regarding noise?

It's a $2500 camera and you want a "custom" interchangeable mount. It's not a high-end camera and is catered to indie filmmakers. It doesn't even have SDI, which I think is an even bigger issue. Canon EF mount is fine and most people already have plenty of lenses that will work and can upgrade from other cameras like the older BMCC 2.5k. Mirrorless lenses are just too new, not mainstream enough and lack options. You can also still get true cinema lens options such as Sigma, Canon, Zeiss, etc to mount. You want PL and want to throw Cooke S4's on? Get an adapter like the Ursa has (if they have one, which they probably do). There's a reason cameras like Alexa, RED and even the Ursa cost much more. You can't get everything. It's already disrupting the market where they can barely keep up with orders and I think people are nitpicking way too much. It's impressive AF! Go out and create and stop worrying so much about the technical aspects that literally won't affect 90% of indie filmmakers.

I'm sure it's a great camera, but not for me. I was at wedding. The videographer had BMPCC 4K on DJI Ronin with focus puller, etc.... way to much for me to want to shoot a "run and gun" wedding. I used to do event video, and run and gun was a part of it. I watched him as his arms got tired.... I felt bad for him.

People railing on the length of the video: blame RU-vid. Content less than 10 minutes for these creators is way less favorable to the algorithm. So if these content creators are going to make a living and continue being able to deliver really good channels, WHICH THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO, deal with 10-minute videos. End of story.

I'm a big fan. Keep going strong; your channel is great. I have purchased lots because of your videos. So you do contradict your self on the speedbooster. You tell us how the booster with the extra optic is making images less sharp, but you say make make the mount closer for all of these converters at the end. It just seems a little back and forth at the end. It's just hard to nail down what your ideas are for the new camera that could have been changed. 5:24 (W/O SPEDB) 8:50 (Focal Reducers) Aren't Focal Reducers Speedboosters. I'm a big fan. Not trying to be neg.... just trying to understand. I know how hard it is to make videos and deal with the comment section. Just want to know your opinion.

I dont' know why they don't make a true 4:3 sensor like Arri Alexa. a 16:9 crop from a 6k sensor, is plenty. But a 4:3 crop from 16:9 doesn't give true anamorphic image circle....

As an Ef user I don't see a problem, happy with the sensor size and frame rates. Can't wait to get my order in.

aside from the rarified world of the big screen...most filmmakers here shoot for the small screen. 6k is overkill, limited to proprietary edit platform, limited lens options...even at an exceptional price point, it doesn't really make sense, imo, for most indie filmmakers unless perhaps you're already a card carrying member of the BM community.

I am sure they will make another version the 8K version and it will have the most of the things that you said will be different in that particular camera they are improving I think they made a great choice because it's really easy to use Canon lenses like really easy they're like ridiculously of common and the other camera lenses are not that common yet but soon they will be well at least a few years from now

There actually is a speedbooster that is being made for this that goes inside and behind the EF mount in front of the sensor. I think it's called the magicboost. Not sure about the optical quality.

I would dislike this video twice if I could. YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE THE THING and you have decided that THE MOUNT is THE ISSUE!!! HONESTLY this on the boarder of straight up CLICK BAIT! Every camera has a catch like this. A 6k camera with these capabilities, and the complaint is the mount... unbelievable...

The BM Pocket 6K is nothing but Canon user bait to drag them opver to Black Magic, which is legit but renders this 6K camera sort of rediculous. You also forgot that an EF mount infront of a S35mm sensor renders all data on the lenses void since EF lenses are usually designed for 35mm stills cameras. IF Black Magic wouldn't have produced this camera to take over Canon users they would have put the same interchangeble mount on the 6K as they did on the Ursa Mini Pro so you can use the same mounts for both cameras. THAT would have killed Canon! ... for good! This thing.... ? This thing goes down the sewer. It probably will find some Canon users but then again, who in hell needs 6K. Marvel Studios don't need it? Sony Film don't need it. Arri Alexa doesn't have it and don't need it. Some RED cams have it but still don't need it. And everyone who still believes in the myth of "higher resolution saves quality when doing digital zooms/pans in post" should probably try out Black Magic Raw in HD 1080, zoom in 400% and see no quality loss to finally stop this bullshit talk. Because resolution DOES NOT MAKE QUALITY pixels -> it's your codec! If your codec is crap you can have as much pixels as you want they are still crap! That's why Arri Alexa still films with 2.8K and is still, being an "old" digital camera, the worlds first and formost digital high-end camera.

This camera DOES have TWO big problems. First: HD in BRAW only in HEAVY crop mode (windowed). BRAW is in my opinion the main features of BM cameras, and it's a MUST for Davinci users (Apple Prores RAW is not actually RAW, Canon Light RAW behaves not as RAW in Davinci, so only cDNG worked as RAW but it's a storage eater!) BUT if you want to use all the sensor size in BRAW you are forced to capture 6K, that in the decent compression of 3:1 means really a LOT of storage!!! (3X HD cDNG!!!) Personally I don't need 6K, I'd still shoot in HD and I'd need simply a little more room (let say 2.5K) for reframing or anamorphic. So, if you want to save your storage and shooting in HD BRAW, forget the "big" sensor and the shallow DoF: the size of the windowed frame is much smaller than a mFT size! For this reason I'd say Pocket 4K was better: you can use the entire sensor in 4K BRAW and set it at 5:1, and this way you obtain the same data amount of HD cDNG (not a great deal, but a sort of compromise). Second: this 6K sensor is NOT so big. Math: the 6K sensor has a 1.56 crop factor, so with a 35mm f/1.4 lens you obtain the "relative" of 55mm f/2.2 in FullFrame. The "old" 4K sensor has a 1.9 crop factor BUT you can add a 0.64x SpeedBooster, so with the same 35mm f/1.4 lens you obtain the "relative" of 43mm f/1.7 in FF. That means that the old Pocket 4K sensor + SpeedBooster is closer to FF sensor than the new 6K APS-C. Conclusions: I think this 6K sensor is almost useless because we'd need ALSO binning mode (an in-camera 6K-to-HD reduction in BRAW) that currently lacks. And if mFT sensor is too tiny for us, then we need something really bigger (like FullFrame) not simply a just-little-bigger APS-C sensor. That's only my opinion, of course.

Canon EF lenses are the cheapest lenses to buy used right now. You can get 35mm f2 IS for nothing. You can get a Tamron 15-30mm f2.8 and with IS for 600-700 bucks. Or a Tamron 11-16 ef-s for 300. It's honestly why I'm slowly buying top grade EF L lenses for way cheaper than any other lens system.

i think BM kinda follows its past processes. cinema cam 2.5k = MFT, production cam 4k = EF, pocket 4k = MFT, pocket 6k = EF I think as long as they were going with a fixed mount, the EF was the best choice, as EF lenses are so widely available, and they don't cost a fortune. Unlike the Red Komodo which got RF mount, RF lenses are stupid expensive. I agree with you kind of, but rather than adapters, they should've done interchangeable mounts that you maybe put on with an allen key Kinda like Red Epic/Scarlet etc etc. I'm more bothered by it's weird form factor, squashed DSLR look. Wish it was more of a cube, with actual big camcorder batteries.

Never thought I'd see anyone deriding the 6K over its EF mount. And this is your super dire major complaint with the camera? Blackmagic really missed the mark by opting for a ubiquitous lens mount? I don't see how getting some EF-to-whatever adapters for it is any worse than your notion of having Blackmagic use a proprietary mount... with... proprietary adapters...? That are sold separately...? You are wishing for a non-standard mount type... unironically, in order to... increase lens variety? Did you process this thought at all?

I have been thinking about getting this camera as a second camera for shooting church services to pair it with my xa50. I already have a number of EF L lenses, and a couple of ATEM switchers. Yes, it is over-kill resolution wise, especially since I would be using it in 1080p, but considering the compatibility with my switchers, multiple connections for audio, and all my existing lenses, and especially the price, this seems like a really good deal. The only thing I would be giving up is par focal zoom function like on my xa50. For a high quality video camera for my needs this seems very economical all things considered. I would love another xa50 but this bmpc6k is the same price with the ability to shoot at 120p. If you have a moment, I would appreciate your thoughts.

Doesn't MFT mount limit your sensor size though? Many lenses wouldn't work still if you had Super 35mm sensor and a smaller mount like you'd prefer. If you're going to add mount adapters anyway, the smaller snout wouldn't at all decrease the size of the camera in the end. There are plenty of adapters for EF mount anyway. Like you said, there are basically "billions" of lenses that will work with this new 6K camera. I don't at all agree with the need for anything other than an EF mount and is actually the reason I AM interested in this camera. Small sensors and basically a speedbooster being required is why I hate MFT. And what mount are you adapting to with your speedbooster anyway? Probably EF... Unless maybe you've got money out the @$$ and you've got multiple speedboosters for using Nikon, Canon, etc. I think Blackmagic would charge a lot more if that was their target audience. I'm super excited about this new camera and especially happy I didn't buy the 4K version

I have the Canon 5 D Mark IV with good lenses and so I can use my 24-105 mm Sts Zoom and don’t need more to buy the 16-35 mm Zoom what I had to do for the 4 K. and I can use my other f 1,4 fix focus-lenses without the crop-tele effect. This fact eliminates the price-difference of about 1.100 € . My soon footages with the 6K fixed on my Roning S seems to make me happy .

Blackmagic did the same thing when they went from the MFT BMCC2.5K to the EF BMPC4K (went to a s35 sensor, higher res, EF mount, same body). No-one really cared, besides the fact that they lost a stop of dynamic range. However, in this one the DR is the same, lots of people use canon glass. A speed booster isn't a necessity, especially with a larger Super 35 sensor.

How is there a market for this product? Who needs to shoot in 6K, and doesn't work on a large, multi-crew production using cinema cameras (red/arri etc). I shoot 4K sometimes, but as safety and overkill. You'd want to be delivering in 4K and still need overshoot...so again, big studios? It's an honest question, can someone explain what I've missed?

You should have mentioned the battery, it's using the Canon LP-6 which officially gives 40 minutes of recording at 6K according to BlackMagic, but in reality it's more like 20-30 min, which is not good enough. They should have gone with a bigger battery.

This is the first video ive seen on this channel that has actually annoyed me... So much opinion as fact and click bait... Focal Reducers / Speed Boosters don't decrease sharpness, they actually increase it as they are compressing the full frame image down to smaller coverage which in turn increases effective sharpness of the lens (assuming you get a decent one of course, like Metabones). I would put money on the fact that the 4k Model with a speedbooster would look just as sharp if not actually sharper than that same lense on the 6k EF native mount when also shot in 4k... and maybe even 6k. (And by sharp, i mean how clean and crisp the image is not video sharpening.).... Still a big fan of the channel though, keep it up! :-)
