my issue with my nd (very cheap, just waiting for simmod to ship) is the chroma noise and noise overall is terribly red. I can't get clean noise with a nd on. My blacks seem useable but could be better. I believe it's IR pollution so I'm just going to cough up the $40.
My pocket4k has IR pollution even without NDs on it but on a very sunny day, on cloudy normal day no problem even with ND, so I'm getting the IR filter to put on only on sunny days, I think BM uses censors that didn't pass QC for other brands thus the price.
Dallas Bagley hello, if you hit the drop down on the matte box it will show an option for the flags but it said they are currently out of stock. The best thing I can suggest is to order those directly at www.Luroit.com. I don’t even remember how I found out about them but they do not seem to be popular in the states. I love mine though and I believe I ordered my flags directly and the ring adaptor and mattebox from amazon. It ships from far but I got it in no time. Hope that helps!
I may have to check yours out. This one is super light. I have since stopped using a traditional matte box set up because of this one. If your looking for light and convenient you will like it. I believe the max filter size is 82mm though so I can’t use it with my sigma 85mm art :-( if you end up trying it out let me know how you like/don’t like it.
Thanks for the comment! While all filters may affect the image quality to some degree, I cannot see any noticeable image quality loss. It’s definitely worth it and necessary. I usually always try to have flags or some sort of matte box with filters in general since filters usually tend to add unwanted flares in certain conditions. I had the way more expensive HOYA and it was so close I kept the ICE filter. Hope that helps!
@@Jsean thanks for the reply, man it doesn't matter what the exposure is my blacks always look purple i think sensor might be faulty because the IR pollution shouldn't be this bad, everything has a purple/magenta tint and the blacks never look black. I thought it might be a firmware issue but the camera is updated so I have no idea
@@Daxinx2 no problem, man that sucks. Is this for both indoor and outdoor shooting? Are you actually using any filters? I’m assuming you get the same results with a filter or no filter. You may have to send BlackMagic an email on that one. Smh. I hope you can get that sorted out though.
Hey I just purchased the ICE for myself, wondering if you were getting a green vignette on yours/if there’s a fix to this in post. It’s pretty noticeable on my 6k pro
No vignetting over here. Are you sure it’s not from using a wider lens and it’s catching the edge of the filter? I got a larger filter to also help with vignetting so any lens that I’ve used didn’t have this issues.
@@brentdelacruz619 glad you figured it out. Did you get the largest filter size? If not just get some step up or down rings to use the biggest filter you can get. That’s what I always try to do. It’s a pain but what can we do
@@Jsean it’s a 86mm filter on a 78mm lens. Coupled with an widening piece for my Matt box along with a step up. So there’s quite a big space between the actual lens and filter itself unfortunately. I’m getting another lens in today that’s a true 86mm. So if I get vignetting on it, I’ll just return the ICE and try for a larger one
@@Jsean Yes, I like the fx6 because of the internal nd but I chose the fx3 for its size, I prefer to put nd filters in front of the lens but keep a contained size. sorry for my English.
No it’s okay. Yea I know what you mean. I used to own a c100 mkii and loved the convenience of the built in ND’s. I actually do like the smaller size of the fx3 too. IDK, the fx6 is still pretty small but the way most just run and gun now a days the small body size of the A7S3 or FX3 would be more useful. Not sure if it’s the WB but based on footage I saw the FX3’s image looks a little better than the S3 while the FX6 look ever so slightly better than the FX3. So much to think about. Plus the FX3 is in stock while the FX6 is on short supply. Ideally it would be great to have both In all honesty I don’t need both right now.
I spoke too soon. FX3 just went out of stock smh. I guess it will give me a little more time to think about it. I think I definitely am skipping the A7SIII though.
I personally am not sure but a lot of cinema cameras seem to lack it. Run and gun documentary style “cinema” camera don’t seem to have this issue. Lots of cinema cameras are modular and you build them up as needed so maybe that has something to do with it as you may not always need a IR cut. I did read on a red forum or somewhere about having aggressive IR filters on the sensor can potentially affect the exposure by up to a stop or something like that. Don’t quote me on that but maybe that’s part of the reason. I remember when the canon 5dsr and 5ds came out they had two versions one with and without the low pass filter. While the filter helped with issues it slightly soften potential details. So even though it helped some didn’t want the filter as they wanted to maximize the potential of the sensor as sometimes the filter hurt the image more than helped it in certain scenarios. I guess it’s a trade off depending on how you shoot and what’s more important to you. With that being said Maybe they want the BM sensor at its best without any filtration to maximize its potential and for us to add one when we only need it. Who knows that’s just my 2 cents lol. Happy New Years 💪
Joel Duarte hello, yes the samples used in the video had the IR cut on/off while using heavy ND. As far as how it compares to the Hoya, I’d say save some money and get this more affordable one. I’ve had both and if the Hoya is better it’s not noticeable enough to justify the price difference in my experience with both. Hope that helps!
@@Jsean thanks for the reply! Your video was a determining factor in getting the ICE over the Hoya. Im actually gonna use it primarily on a bmmcc, i replaced the internal ir cut because it got foggy, and apparently the one i ordered lets in a lot of ir. To the point that even without the nd it makes black fabric look reddish. So i hope i saved some money and the ICE does the job. Thanks again for the reply and the review!
Joel Duarte no problem, sounds good. Hope you like it! Just make sure to use a decent quality ND especially when using heavier ND. Cheap ones tend to have a bad color cast.
@@Jsean incredibly enough i use a K&F 30 dollar variable ND and never had any noticeable color cast! Aside from the horrible X in the max setting its actually pretty good. The ir is more of a fix for my bmmcc but since i bought it, i'll also use it with my bmpcc 4k.
Could you tell me with which camera you actually shot this video? I own the BMPCC 4k and your main youtube camera does not look like a BMD camera. The color science and the texture is different. I can't find anywhere the information of what camera you actually used to film this. Could you enlighten me? Thx!
