"One of these days, I am going to attack Ian when we are on the road. He's bigger than me, and probably a better fighter... So I am gonna do it with a few friends of mine... probably SWEDISH...And we'll beat him up, but he won't know its me!" - Ritchie Blackmore This has been one of my favorite lines of plotting for at least 7 years. And the intro to the song adds hilarious tension.
@@Nissardpertugiu Really ? I saw him on stage he did not look that tall. Anyway, he's not a fighter or a boxer at all and would not be an ally to Ritchie against Ian.
Give Gillan a break. He had one of the best rock voices on the planet and was synonomous with the Deep Purple sound. And dont forget the rest of the band. ALL of them were sensational in their own right.
people arguing in 2014 about 20 year old words, not getting jokes, getting upset over who did/said what, as if it matters now, these guys are old and went their separate ways long ago. be glad with what music they made together
Gillan is CLASS! I saw him perform at the House of Blues. After the great show he joked around and signed autographs from the stage for EVERYONE who wanted one and it wasn't even a scheduled "autograph signing." He signed his last one after he asked "anyone else?" and no one responded. Ritchie and Tony and Geezer for that matter would NEVER do anything close to that!
I love artists who don't give their fans the time of day though. Too right I say. You pay 5.99 for the album, and that's it, you've had you're money's worth, they owe you nothing else. They're right to ignore autograph nerds.
Ritchie admitted in Vermont to never having been praised as a child. I sense damage there. When Purple played the Concerto for Group and Orchestra in 1969 Ritchie didn't want to do it, but his performance was the most exciting of the lot. And when you realise the band's parents were in the Albert Hall that night, it gives you some insight as to why he pulled out the stops for a project he had no interest in. Something about that feels very sad.
Well so much for THAT reunion. . . I think it all worked out. When Ritchie left, he formed Rainbow. When Ian left, he formed GIllan. These were brilliant projects that gave the world some of the gave the world some of the greatest music ever written. Artists do what they need to do, and they don't always get along. . .
have u heard about ritchie and all the crazy stuff he has done in the last 45+ years, doesn't sound odd for him at all so i wouldn't exactly think that he was joking but they are both great musicians but apart from that they are both twats!
Ritchies remark about plotting to jump Ian in a back alley with some friends and kick his ass is probably one of my favorite rock'n'roll quotes of all time. Awesome sense of humor, haha.
It is a great pity, even it could be called an injustice that this legendary clip isn't today rated shoulder by shoulder with Monty Python classic masterpieces...
This is probably one of my favorite videos ever. I quote it all the time, in the same way people quote the Buddy Rich tapes. To me, it's on that level of comedy. The way "knocking on your backdoor" fades in, and Ritchie's last lines. So funny. "probably swedish, and we'll beat them up, but they won't know it's me!"
Aww, they are 💜. Making music is so personal. Living life together as a band *DEEP PURPLE*, everyone of them as musician, but also as individual, member of the band, it must not have been easy. Imagine how great music they have created in such tense atmosphere. Maybe that is their one secret of success. One is so serious and other one with his merry ways😄💜 💜1:21-2:23💜
It's sad to understand that two great artists have failed to find common ground... But that's life. They are both great anyway... I am sure they still respect each other, at least I can feel that in what Ian is saying about Ritchie...
they areboth great artists....each one on his grounds....astonising.......!!!!!!!!!!!!..its just that gillan is f..ing handsome......no ceriously they are giants.........
At the end of the day, both these guys are very strong personalities. Richie went off to be a court jester on some other planet. Ian gillan is still in deep purple, so 1 nil to him really. Lots of bands that are on the go today do not fair well without the difinitive singer/front man, ask judas priest and iron maiden what happened when halford and dickinson left in the 90's, they went down the tubes. You must have the front man, like him or not ian gillan IS the deep purple front man...period
What you guys talking about. Ian Gillan still has his voice. I have a two track cd of Gillan and Purple on tour in Australia 99 and he rocks like it was 1972
Ritchie Blackmore has a god given talent to be able to write and play some of the most fantastic Rock Riffs ever recorded. Unfortunately he has also been given equally enormous amount’s of being a complete Tosser.
Saw them at their second to last gig with Blackmore in 1993, and it's still the best concert I've ever been to! Blackmore was really difficult at the time, as I experienced since I was staying at the same hotel as the band, but Blackmore went out on stage during that tour with one purpose: To blow the rest of the band offstage! That made sure the band played at the best of their ability, and the concert I attended..... Nothing can ever come close!!!
yeah i thought that was pretty daft....does he really think Swedes strike fear into the heart of anyone?...is that 'dry humor'?....and to me, the whole point of kicking the shit out of someone is that you ABSOLUTELY want them to know EXACTLY who did it.
@@BozJust Forget the myth about the tall, blond, modern Viking. Swedes are not the world's tallest. They may have been the tallest people in the world a century ago. But in the past 100 years, Swedish men and women alike have seen themselves outgrown by several of their European neighbours, according to new findings ....they were #17 on a list i just saw....averaging 5'8".....I'm 5'11, and thats not particularly tall, here in America.
Dio, Powell... and... and... who else? Gillan? Coverdale? They were likely going places, and yeah, hitching onto Purple's fame didn't hurt... but they were still earning their pay. Blackmore had to find room for other musicians all the time because his ego takes up too much room on stage, and in the studio.
+Dawna T ..... Blackmore didn't 'discover' Cozy Powell, lol - Powell was in a couple of groups before he joined Jeff Beck-with whom he made two great records; Blackmore picked him up when he was freelancing between bands
Speaking of Mk II, Gillan obviously came up with most of the vocal melodies. Sure, Lord's Hammond was an integral part of the DP sound. In terms of compositions, Blackmore and Glover were dominant composers. Lord added his own mini-compositions in his solos, but most Mk II songs were composed by Blackmore and Glover.
Two Giants of British Rock History - unable to comprise on their genius because of their youth Now, in the Autumn of their years, they see things slightly differently
+Lee McDaid - Guitar No Gilllan is as selfish, manipulated and false as he has always been. At first he bans Blackmore from playing at their induction - then he claims that he has invited him twice to perform with them. Think it´s time for him to wake up from his deliria!....
I think it's just his dry and unique sense of humour. I've talked to Ritchie before and I can tell you one thing - he frequently says the craziest damn things. I'm not sure if it's to see if you're really listening, or to throw you off or whatever, but I believe it's just his way of having a laugh.
two of the greatest of rock music history...its sad these conflicts occured between them...the world lost the chance to see more great performences of them due to this...
I completely agree with you and would like to add that Steve is very good to replace Blackmore , but NOBODY can't substitute Ian Gillan! He is the living legend.Sorry for you Ritchie.
Ha ha. Even with all their serious differences, they still have a sense of humour about each other. I don't think the MK2 (C) lineup would have survived much longer anyway even if Ritchie hadn't have exited stage left in '93. I love all of Purple's colourful career but for me the MK2 lineup had that little bit extra, probably caused by the tension between these two giants.
A friend of mine Saw Gillan back in the 90s with his band "Gillan" right before the DP reunion. Gillan was all drunk and the show was worse... Its no wonder that Blackmore could not stand this
You don't get to be the best heavy rock band of all time - along with UFO - without a bit of turbulence. It may be melodic, but it's still turbulent music. This was a sad phase, though, because Battle Rages On is an exceptional album.
Their inability to compromise was an integral part of both their success and their self-destruction - hardly news I agree. Jon Lord himself commented during interview that Ian Gillan being allowed to leave in '73 was a huge regret for him and possibly a huge mistake and, as Jon went on to say, if only the management had allowed the band a break in around late 1972 / early 1973 then the band may well have remained intact, Jon even speculated on greater success with a continued Mk2. Certainly Mk3 soon became unstable as Ritchie didn't appreciate what he referred to as "shoeshine music" (Ritchie's words not mine).
Those digs, the intellectual dwarf thing and the back alley fight, they were obviously tongue in cheek... those guys really respect each other as artists, they just know they can't work together
Explain to me what's funny about Ritchie's words? If this is the kind of humor or truth that Blackmore is capable of, then Gillan described him very accurately - an intellectual dwarf.
It is never easy to get two partners to get along in a business for very long, let alone five of them. I am amazed at how frank both musicians are that they would talk openly of their distain for each other.
Remember that Gillan said about Ritchie that he is a banjo player, nice alusion in the song 'Ted the mechanic' when he says 'the banjo player took a hike'...He holds a grudge on him even after Ritchie left.
Ritchie is the man. he's the name. he's the one. he knows what he needs for what he wants. if they don't have it they're out it is not a personal thing( well maybe sometimes) it's a professional thing.
This is fantastic....beat him up in the back ally with some Swedish friends...lol...they both have a great sense of humor, guess it doesn't work on each other...
No matter what they say, Ritchie never broke his guitar on stage when Ian was there, but he did it in all bands when Ian is not there and that speaks volumes. It is clear Ian would antagonize Ritchie, but only up to a point. Ian knew exactly when to stop so that Ritchie would not get too upset on stage, And it all has to do with the negative energy to positive energy conversion that only gods are able to do.
That's true Jon Lord was the true leader. According to Ian and Ritchie - they said - " we can not be without each other". complex and at the same time ordinary people. I love them so much!)))
Are you talking about Gillan or Blackmore? Actually, both of them are intelligent... it's just that Ritchie can be the bigger baby of the 2. He became the main driving force of Purple and I think he abused his leverage with that and Gillan wasn't having any of it in the end -- but, it took all 5 talents to make MK2 what it became to all of us... pure magic, and i miss it. Sexy, if you haven't already: check out Roger Glover ripping into Smoke on the Water (1973 NY show) -- powerful!
Listening to these interviews, Gillan rightly accepts most of the responsibility for creating a working environment that was too hard for Blackmore & the rest of the band to be productive in. They were being paid a lot of money to produce a quality product, so they made him leave. Blackmore never says anything nasty about him. Gillan on the other hand never misses an opportunity, then or now, to get nasty & personal. It's about time he grew up & realised it's not all just about him! He was a great & unique singer, but so selfish & unprofessional.
Probably because he still holds a grudge for being pushed out of the biggest selling band in the world back in 72-73 and then to have Mark 3 enjoy the rewards. Gillan turned down the movie JSSS for DP only to be squeezed out a year later. I am sure he still thinks about all those things.
@guitarlad89 Actually, I've grown to at least appreciate them a tad more since I post that ignorant comment. lol. I've been working at a record store here for about a month and a couple people have told me that Ritchie actually stops in the store once every few months and that I WILL end up meeting him. I hope they're not just jerking my chain!
I do have a lot of Books about Deep Purple and all the People involved in that Group since they where founded , and whats in allmost every Book is written is that Mr. Blackmore is the one who is responsible for all the Trouble it gave in that Band , and the same in Rainbow too ?! ... So , why you People are saying that he is not an Asshole ? Whats so terrible with that if it is the Truth ? Jon Lord once says about Ritche " If something in the early day went wrong for him than he was acting like a Child you have took his Toy away and nothing could change his mind ! ... He is a great Guitarist ans Musician but his Human side is exactly the opposite .......
