Australian radio legend John Laws takes Deep Purple's Ian Gillan & Roger Glover through their musical history discussing the industry, the band, their relationship with Ritchie Blackmore and how much fun it must have been through the classic period. A fantastic interview.

i like the way British society holds their rock stars in high regard like Americans do with their talentless celebrities. These guys, Brian May , Clapton , Winwood,Page, Jones, Plant , Beck , Jeff Lynne ,Iommi etc actually deserve to have the spotlight on them and have something interesting to offer because theyre talented artists .

Probably one the most intelligent interviews with these guys. Great sensitive and clever interviewer. From this interview you can suss out that Gillan effectively “sold his soul“, interested in the economic‘s, as Blackmore always said, this coincided with the loss of his talent. But it’s very rare for someone to get such an incredible honesty.

He goes well below the Surface and asks those questions that you wish you had asked but, didn't think of at the time. He is a great guitarist with a huge ego. It's too bad he just plays goofy fairs with his wife and not RR. You have to admit, his replacement Steve Morse is no slouch. Guitar player magazine seems to think he is pretty good. To the die hard deep purple fans it's all Ritchie.

"Negative leadership"?! I hardly see someone not telling people what to do and saying what they're not prepared to do as leadership of any kind. It seems more a case of live and let live whilst preserving your sense of integrity. Someone objecting to that would seem to me to be the aggressor in the relationship who calls someone 'difficult' for not falling in with their wishes all the time. As a song writer Blackmore was head and shoulders above them all and they were all better when he was with them, collectively or individually.

+fattwat1 You know, talented people have issues. I agree it is crazy some of the things Blackmore did. As you say, he wanted Glover out of DP, but he wanted him in Rainbow. He had ELF in Rainbow then he fired all of them but DIO... (I would have to say that Dio's voice and Blackmore's guitar was one of the most awesome combinations ever... but so was Gillan's voice and Blackmore)... Anyway, I think it's just who he was.. Never happy, but Blackmore does seem to be happy now, and these guys seem to be happy.

Mmmm the Smoke on the Water partial clip is from the DVD - Come Hell or High Water. This amazes me as it is one of the most "telling" concerts. Blackmore is at his worst and best. He plays some phenomenal guitar AND at moments carries on like a . . . pratt. I am a amazed that Gillan says there are (and now 5 years later were) only 5 record companies left in the world. Both Glover and Gillan are really well spoken and I believe . . . honest.SALES FIGURES - I have tried really hard as it is really difficult to get sales figures on DEEP PURPLE but luckily, Glover advises us that they have sold 130 million records. I have heard that DEEP PURPLE sold about 66 million certified copies by April 1976. Keep in mind that Purple split up after 8 years !EXTENDED GUITAR SOLO's - Ian Gillan turns it down for general viewing. Gillan banged a groupie during Ritchie's "unknowable" solo in regards to length. LoL.
