The K-pop girl group, BLACKPINK, is the biggest girl group in the world right now. There hasn’t been a group like them since the Spice Girls. Many other girl groups have come and gone, while other K-pop girl groups have not reached their level of international success. What makes them unique?
Many factors make BLACKPINK special. First of all, each individual member, Jennie, Lisa, Jisoo and Rosé are all talented in their own right with many fans backing them up. That’s why they can have solo careers and activities outside of BLACKPINK while ultimately being part of the group. Another factor is their fans, BLINKs. They are a dedicated group of fans who have been able to organize together in support to promote their favorite artists. It is their effort that made BLACKPINK into million sellers, meaning they have sold over a million copies of their first full-length album, BLACKPINK: The Album. One hidden factor is how the South Korean government backs the expansion of Korean culture globally by using K-pop as soft power. People who are fans of BTS or BLACKPINK are more willing to view South Korea positively as well as learning Korea, visiting the country, or buying Korean products.
