The Age of the Tram was quite short lived in Britain, with few cities maintaining their historic tramways these days. Blackpool in Lancashire is an exception though, and there is one tram in particular that has a very odd history. join me in this video where I explore the haunted history of Blackpool 703, also known as Sunderland 101.

The Jolly Reiver is my project aiming to preserve and promote the forgotten folklore and history of rural Britain and Ireland. Primarily focusing on folklore and legends, you’ll not find me trying to deconstruct these old stories or trying to rationalise them with science and psychology. Instead I will present them as they were always told by our forebears, and leave the conclusions up to you. Videos are filmed on location to show you exactly where these stories took place.

I worked there in 2005. 703 wasnt used much that season and i only worked on it 3 times, but once,i was on late shifts and we were on Cleveleys flyers and were waiting our time at the southbound stop ready to run back to depot and we heard someone walking around upstairs. From what i heard when i worked there it was supposedly an engineer whonhanged himself on the stairs. But i certainly heard footsteps upstairs.

@AK47Warrior I was with a driver called Steve and another conductor called Dave but I don't remember their surnames but I remember their faces. Not sure of they still work there but we were sitting in the back saloon,it was really quiet nobody about and it was like someone walked up and down the aisle upstairs. Very strange but we knew we were empty cos we'd been sat there 10 minutes. On late shifts you were lucky to have 30 quid in your pouch, but we checked and no one was up there. We only found it was supposedly haunted after we told people at depot what we heard.

I agree with you. Having come across such on more than one occasion. There is an office, in a shopping mall, in Chorley, that has been visited a few times and staff have left because of it. Made me laugh when seeing things moving when they should have been stationary, like heavy doors moving, opening and shutting/

Thanks for sharing the history I remember the trams I think that some people are sensitive to spirits & others aren't the home in pockley must of had something bad happen in some of the rooms people can find out threw historians or the library as to why they feel uneasy there I've had my own encounters to one when I was 14 & again 45+ at my old house on the southbrook in Daventry Evans Close I won't give the number out there are 3 children 2 girls 1 boy who play in the bathroom at night there harmless they wouldn't let me sleep until after 2am you hear taps turned on and splashing of water but get up to check & everything is off there is 1 spirit person in the lounge they never showed me if they were male or female I think they're linked to the children they didn't ask they unnerved me I remember sleeping on the sofa 1 night & without warning this freezing cold person had there legs right up against the bottom of my sofa I was wary I asked them to leave me alone & they did I was freezing cold it's sad that they didn't reveal themselves to me maybe I could of helped them I wonder if the new tenants & children have encountered them please watch out for the greys in a craft they're really sinister Truth they took me over before I moved out it was horrible thanks to My Jesus he broke there control over me I would never live in that estate again.

I actually witnessed 703 at Rossall Hospital intersection... I'd been fishing on the prom one night and returned back home in my car about 02:30 in the morning crossing the tram track that is just off Rossall Road. Needless to say at that time there were no cars on the road and the last tram had finished hours ago. As I approached the crossing slowly a tram came past me very slowly and weirdly, silent.. Blackpool trams are very squeaky with thier old wheels. It glided past me silent, all lit up , why? it had no passengers infact I never even noticed any crew. As the road cleared I went over the track and watched it gliding silently into the distance towards Fleetwood ,all lit up. The year? mid 1990's but don't know exactly when.

Never knew this story. I'd heard about the phantom linesman who is said to walk the tracks at Bispham but not a haunted tram. This did remind me of the time I used to be a bus driver and we had a bus assigned to our depot that was, as far as I was concerned, haunted. I never really knew what it was but you never felt alone when driving it when it was empty. There was a real sense that someone was watching you and whoever or whatever they were they didn't feel friendly. The uneasiness feeling was strongest at the back left of the vehicle and I used to give that area a very quick check during the pre-drive check over.

I have experienced this strong feeling that there was somebody at the back of a coach that I was driving late at night from Newcastle to Sydney , Australia . I was reasonably sure that all passengers had disembarked and nobody could be seen in the mirror , but eventually this impression became so distracting that I stopped the coach and walked to the rear , to find a couple asleep on the seat . It did give me quite a fright ! I then took them to the nearest railway station , waited for the train and waved them goodbye . Obviously , had I not followed my intuition and stopped , they would have wound up at the depot ! No phantoms to report , sorry ! 👻

Its an interesting one and I enjoyed your video - it was informative and not sensational which is always a plus. So I work for a major UK train operating company. It's worth noting that our main depot is on a road called "Dead Man's lane" - the whole area, which was very cheap land in the 1800s, was the city's plague pit. We have at least 2 units, that I know of, that some drivers will not collect from the depot on their own. I myself have had a weird experience on one which I've told colleagues about and got a "we're not surprised" back. The experiences range from doors opening by themselves, the passenger information system corrupting itself randomly and the public address system activating with no one onboard to work it. One of the 2 sets has also been involved in more fatalities than any other unit in the fleet - including some particularly nasty ones. It does make you wonder what might be going on.

I love the old trams - if you're ever in the area, Crich Tram Museum is well worth a visit, although they don't have the length of track of Beamish or Blackpool. It's very cool that Blackpool didn't get rid of its old trams when all the other towns did - and now, of course, towns are bringing the trams back, although in a very different shape to the original ones. I wonder what the story is of this old man and why he was still travelling on the tram - and whether he reached his destination in the end. I guess we'll never know.

Full body apparitions are rare, full body apparitions that apport items are rare indeed. The only other that springs to mind is the underground worker that left some overalls on a bench. That story can be seen on the marvellous Ghosts on the Underground doc. Still, this also involved interaction, probably triggered by the rough weather. Perhaps the old chap was killed in a storm and never made it home.

I totally agree with you about that programme being excellent. "Ghosts on the Underground " I have rewatched many times and will continue to do so. There's another one I recall. A plane crashed into the Everglades in 1960's? Wonderful , atmospheric video , with highly appropriate yet subtle background music ! The phantom bell ringing reminds me of a similar phenomenon where nurses are summoned to vacant beds in hospitals , in fact I have even heard this first hand from nurses when I had been a patient ! 🙄. During a visit to Thirlmere Railway Museum , Sydney , if you enter some of the unrestored carriages , you feel a strong sense of foreboding and of the past , which makes the visit even more interesting ! Such exhibits would no doubt have some fascinating tales to tell .

When you said it was moved to Beamish, I got chills! I’ve visited Beamish so many times over the years, and never knew the story of the tram. Clicking on this video I wasn’t expecting to be told about a tram I have actually travelled on 🤯 😂 I don’t think I had a paranormal experience in the tram, but definitely felt uneasy in multiple places at beamish; especially the school and houses nearby, and the mine….the mine is absolutely vile! On a school trip we had to go in there and our tour guide deliberately turned off the lights and I FREAKED, I wouldn’t say I’m claustrophobic but there is something about that mine that churns my stomach with dread-very unpleasant energy in there. Love Beamish but seriously wouldn’t recommend the mine 😂

101, bloody 101. I had the opportunity to ride her once, it was a late evening Bemish, the museum was closing and everyone was leaving we had just left the hall, heading towards the museum exit. We rounded the hill just before the exit. The bell ran once, myself and the two other passengers looked at each other. The atmosphere was strange to say the least. We arrived at the exit where I got of with the other two passengers. A lady about 20 years older them me had been one of the other passengers, he had sat in the very seat that keeps popping up in these stories. She came up to and ask "did you feel the temperature drop when that bell rang." I could only answer no, of course England isn't known for nice weather but the day was rather good all things considered. It was most certainly not cold.

Beamish is called "The Living Museum of the North", so there isn't anything from London there. In fact most of the exhibits come from the North East, although part of the bank in the 1913 town area comes from Southport, and the current tram fleet includes cars from Blackpool, Sheffield, Oporto, and Lisbon as well as Gateshead, Sunderland and Newcastle.

I run a ghost tour of Blackpool, and whilst I have heard of the tales of 703, I think most of it can be put down to faulty wiring and the like. These cars were built for 20 to 30 years of service, tops. This year, car 700 is 90!!! So wiring will lose its newness a little in that time. 712 and 722 were also allegedly haunted. 712 by a little girl who fell downstairs in the 60's and 722 by a man who did the same a few years later. Bells ringing, destinaton blinds changing of their own accord. Seats swinging back.over and then back again. That sort of thing. There's a 'phantom tram' that is allegedly felt wafting past the stop at Pleasant Street where the Claremont Hotel is. You hear it rattle by. Feel the draught it makes. If it's raining, you apparently even see the rain pushed out of the tracks by the invisible wheels, but no physical tram is ever seen. There's a night watchman with a red lantern supposedly at Manchester Square that drivers haven't seen until they seemingly run over him, but on stopping and panicking, there's no sign of him. In the bus depot, near the fuel tanks, a man in a cloth cap who apparently was a fueller is seen quite often, only to vanish in front of your eyes. The electrical compound has several stories, but for the most recent and most evidenced, watch Darren from Adventureme when he did a ghost hunt around the depot and a seance in that very compound on Standard tram 147. I am a very sceptical person about all of this, but things happened that I have absolutely NO explanation for whatsoever. Very unnerving. Don't have nightmares. ..ha ha ha ha!!

@murraykitson1436 You are most welcome . Glad it was of interest to you. Yes, that can absolutely happen, as was sadly demonstrated only too well on Progress Twin Car set T2/ 282 a few years ago.

I use to work for Blackpool Transport, and I have worked this tram 703, I have also heard and seen the seat flipped over. you can hear the seat when flipped, it has a sound all of its own. we were empty at the time and finishing duty, and we were on the way back to Rigby Road,

Spooky. The ghost must be pissed off he's stuck in a mothballed tram. Does Blackpool have transfers to get onto another tram?

there's something particulalrly creepy about how normal this is, now ghouls or wails just a spectral rider who rings to be let off. the tension level for the conductor must have been ballistic

Absolutely wonderful. I'm from Sunderland but haven't lived there for almost 15 years. Whilst living in Sunderland I visited Beamish a number of times over the years & used the trams there to move about the site. Wondering if I was ever a passenger there on tram 703.

Really interesting video. I've never visited Blackpool but I know the North East well and visited Beamish a few times. Could be just a coincidence but one time I was on a tram-not sure which one but I felt very sick for no reason. Not saying it's supernatural but intriguing non the less! xxx

Heartbreaking story, this.. the ghostly tram rider did not appear malevolent.. he simply wanted a ride to somewhere quite important to him.. This entire story was submerged in sadness.. loneliness.. pain..😭 Hopeless romantics we may well be.. even so.. this story appears to us to be a portion of some mourning soul searching for his other half.. who perhaps is also en route to him.. via this haunted tram.. Our heartfelt hope is that indeed they will reunite one day.. perhaps.. as you say.. when the tram is brought again into service.. until then.. we shall live in hope 💜💙 Thank you so much for a marvelous and mesmerizing take that had us hanging on your every word.. superb, this was💜💙

My psychic side says the gentleman passenger is Arthur with a surname beginning with H , Howe or something similar. He was born in 1904 or 1914 … not exactly sure which . The note produced was from just after decimalisation , so an old tenner . I feel that the gentleman died at home during the night after his last journey there by this tram in 1973 , as I feel that it was the year Princess Anne married Captain Mark Phillips .

How can a ghost have a physical ten pound note? Makes absolutely no sense! Would have been interesting if they had put the note to one side, and kept it, possibly traced its origin, and it could have been used as an exhibit later in the museum. But I bet they didn't , as something else, possibly nefarious was going on that night in my opinion!!

Being from Blackpool, I did notice a tram at Beamish that had a Blackpool destination (I think it was ‘’pleasure beach’ ) on the board on the front. I didn’t know it had history.

That’s a different Blackpool team I believe. Number 31. Still at beamish to this day.
