Exploring the History of Winter Gardens in Blackpool, uncovering all of it's history and Hidden Secrets.
We head to the Arena, formerly known as the Indian Lounge, exploring behind the scenes and sharing it's many historic secrets and hidden rooms. The Indian Lounge opened in 1896, as part of the Empress Ballroom that opened the same year. We find that maybe not all is lost of this grand room, hidden behind a false wall are some relics.

Bloody brilliant (again!!) - It's hard to believe this amazing building has so many secrets! The Indian room looked amazing;y impressive, typical 1960s renovation (almost definitely cheaper to redesign the area than the cost of the upkeep of the fancy decoration). Who knows, one day it may be stripped back to its original status. Already looking forward to the next instalment in this great series..!

@@jacobmassey3897 Very true, here in Bath, they demolished the Grand Pump Room Hotel in 1959,just a few years before I was born, absolutely stunning building outside & inside according to my mum. Then in the 60's & 70's we had 'The sack of Bath', a destructive urban redevelopment of the city of Bath, lost some beatiful buildings, etc, damage was worst than what was done by the Bath Blitz in 1942.

It's a shame these beautiful rooms are gone (even if they parts still remain behind walls) and replaced with such dull soulless interiors. Considering how much time and hard work it took to make the Indian room so beautiful, it's sad to see it changed. Can't wait until the next episode.

I’m going to go on a limb but looking at the ceiling and the outside newer roof I’m guessing those domes are still there and still looking the same. They’ve just dropped the ceiling and that outside (aerial view) roof pitch looks as if it accommodates the dome protruding.

I sang in the Planet Room when I was 14, 15 and 16 when the Blackpool Music Festival was on. I stood on that stage and the place seemed enormous. I won the Wilson Trophy for Soprano voice under 16 but I can't remember if that took place in the Planet Room because as you say, there are loads of different rooms. Thanks for that film. I visited Blackpool for the first time with some mates a couple of days ago, always heard good things about it. When we got there we were so shocked at the high street and how many shops were closed down, the general state of the town - it seems like the government has just forgotten about the people who live there. We also unfortunately experienced quite a bit of racism so will not be returning. Its a shame because the beech is beautiful and I bet in its hay day it was probably a really beautiful place.

My experience was similar when I last visited for a stag weekend maybe five or six years ago. It's a very rough place these days, a real tragedy of social and economic decline. The seafront is depressing enough, the Golden Mile having very much lost its sparkle to cheap renovations and shortsighted development, but if you go a couple of streets back, there's poverty and deprivation unparalleled in this country (and I live 8n Beeston in Leeds, so I'm certainly no stranger to such.) I went with my parents a few times as a child for the illuminations and even by the 1980s it was a bit seedy but nothing like today. It's been in a spiral of decline for maybe 50 years during which most of its Victorian grandeur was lost, families abandoned it, and with many of the former B&Bs and hotels being turned into HMOs and hostels for people from all over the country with social problems such as drug abuse or mental health, I can't see it coming back to anything like it's heyday any time soon. I certainly wouldn't take the kids there, for the reasons you state... probably wouldn't even go there again for a night out, it feels very unsafe now. I suppose it represents everything that's gone so horribly wrong with this country in microcosm... drugs, violence, poverty, physical, economic and social decline, lack of hope... and of course the Govt don't give a monkey's because it's full of poor folks who don't vote for them 😞

Interesting film. I've never been to the Winter Garden but I suspect that despite all the horrendous architectural losses of the 1960s and 70s, there's still plenty of surviving heritage hidden behind false ceilings and layers of plasterboard and cladding. Anyone who's ever renovated a Victorian house will attest that quite often, features and details were merely 'boxed in' with cheap ply and an hour or so with a claw hammer or crowbar can often reveal turned balustrades, marble fireplaces, preserved floor tiles, panelled doors and wonderful plaster mouldings, coving and ceiling roses, all covered up during the mid century backlash against ornamentation. It would take a lot of money to restore the Indian Lounge which would probably need to be funded by heritage lottery grants, but I would ve worth doing if only because I'd umagine all those forgotten voids full of dodgy wiring are likely to be a horrendous fire risk.

It busts my balls looking behind them walls, I get britians pound was the controlling world currency and those hay days are long gone but to delete such beauty should be a crime, the room needs full restoration with a modern interpretation of the original roof, as a space to spend time id die there.

It's such a shame that's we have to accept, fashions change with the times. But if the powers that were / be had the foresight to cover over the magnificent decor of the Indian Lounge instead of demolishing it, wouldn't that have been something - ?

Why are you not a conspiracy theorist? I will say, Blackpool's spoilt for it compared to Southport. Now there's a supermarket where that Winter Gardens was. They even knocked down the model village in the intervening years, before they built it.
