I went to Battersea park funfair in 1959 it was great fun until my money ran out, it was my only vist i have great memories of the park and train journey back home.
I have some images of here from when I was a kid, then when it was derelict, i sneaked in .. can I ask if there was an incident with a young boy, 🤔 I know I sound like a nutter but I saw a boy dressed in a little flat cap and school uniform 🤔
The canopy was there in early 1972. I left from Bradford Exchange for recruitment interviews in the RN Careers Office in Leeds in April. When I joined up September 1972 I left from our wonderful (sarcasm) new Interchange. Totally different experience.
14:14 Just in case we have any budding Latin scholars here, the motto in the stained glass of the "massive door" is a popular one. labor omnia vincit literally means work conquers all and is from that ol' fella Virgil. A more approachable translation would be something along the lines of Keep at it and you'll win out in the end sonshine.
10:34 How many years has that statement brutalist concrete monstrosity of a car park been blighting the heart of Bradford? Thank goodness common sense is finally prevailing. The sooner all these 1960s as subtle as a brick excrescences foisted on an unsuspecting public are consigned to the dustbin of history, the sooner we can begin to take pride in and look after our home towns again.
There's canals under moorfields, Whitechapel and James street, and the former Liverpool echo buildings have got the remains of a tunnel leading to this dock which still has water, they also kept the entire gold bullion reserve for the UK on an underground mini railway which ran under all the banks in Liverpool, the idea being that it could all be put on ships and sent to Canada and the US if ever the Germans invaded. And there's also rumoured that there's a tunnel under the river reputedly dug in the middle ages by monks between two points opposite on the river, they operated a ferry for hundreds of years and it is supposed that they dug the tunnel to help Catholics fleeing persecution over decades or even hundreds of years, there's a site on the Liverpool side at monks ferry which has been under investigation for years
I grew up in Bradford, and got out of there as soon as I could at 18. Sadly I still have family there so visit regular, and still work there sometimes (I worked on the construction of Broadway shopping centre and more recently on the Bradford live project), but I wouldn't go into the city unless I had to. If it's convenient I might call into foster square retail park when passing. I've seen a number of videos recently about the decline of Bradford, this one is great and your knowledge of the city and buildings is brilliant, but all the videos avoid (for obvious reasons) the real reason Bradford is failing. Yeah the decline of industry in the city, yeah the council has been terrible at times, but the reason the city can't sustain itself is the people. I stopped going into the city in my teens because of the people. As a kid a bus to Halifax or 2 buses to Leeds was worth it to avoid the people. My family and friends in Bradford would all rather bus to Halifax or drive to Leeds, to avoid the people in the city. These are people who worked in the city for years. My mum, aunt and sisters all worked in various shops in John Street market and Kirgate. The mother of my child gave up her job in the city and transferred to Leeds because of the people she was selling to. The only people who go to Bradford city centre are people who have little choice, everybody else will stay away. And the people that do go have given Bradford the reputation it has that means people don't want to visit Bradford. You only have to see the comments on videos regarding Bradford on tiktok or RU-vid too see what people who have never been to Bradford think about the place, and it's often clear why they feel the way they do.
Would be great if they gave it a good scrub and repainted the insides. I just feel it would make it a better experience. These rides are unique and if they were overhauled could be something special
Bradford football club not being in the premier league has also affected Bradford. Imagine if they were in the premiership the fans would be coming every weekend to support the businesses.
Having been partly responsible for getting the Nine Arch Viaduct at Tredegar converted into a walking and cycling route I can advise that structures like this, whether listed or not, are subject to annual visual inspections and every 10 years are subject to a full engineering inspection. To respond to littlemissy2883 it will be the owners of the viaducts that decide to demolish them and NOT 'the Council'. This was often done for a combination of expense to maintain/restore and public safety. In the case of the Nine Arches the owners were the British Rail Residuary Body - responsible for all old BR land and structures. The Nine Arches is now owned by Sustrans having been sold for £1. And the overflow channel from a reservoir is called a spillway - sorry to nitpick. These are excellent videos - I am really enjoying them. Thank you.
Great video, thank you! Sad to see the building be demolished out of its beauty, but great to see more of it from the excavation. If only they kept it before or rebuilt it one day haha (won't happen). Saltaire would be twice as popular if it was still standing.
You know, as a guy who has visited the now preserved section of the Churnet Valley line more than once, it'd be quite the historical moment for this section of the line to finally be opened once more, kind of similar to the sections of the Corris railway that are being re-laid in the future.
Very very very very sad dispointing I ws very sad upset wn I heard about this bad news .it's bn thr for soooooo longs couple yrs .I miss it soooooo much.
Great video, I hope to watch pts 2 & 3. I was a Red Coat at Filey back in 1972. It was magical and loved every minute. As you mentioned the size of Filey (which was the largest Butlin's) I wore out 2 pairs of white pumps and one pair of white shoes having to walk around the camp all day and evening and dance in the ballroom every night. Used to be the DJ in the Disco during the day as well as running the various competitions that went on during the days. Made some great friendships with fellow Red Coats and other workers as well as the holiday makers of course. I still bring up in conversations with people I meet about when I was a Red Coat and how great Butlin's was.
I love the artitecture of the building, so beautiful compared to the newer builds, I remember going into city hall years ago as a kid but can't remember it that well, the court scenes are usually filmed in Bradford for emmerdale and a few other tv shows as well, shame the rest of bradford isn't looking the best nowadays
This is a really good thing for Leeds and hope it's appreciated, I never knew about this and used to visit regularly up until last year. Will try and go.
The destruction of many great and wonderful buildings in bradford is akin to a destructure of culture and heritage. We, Bradfordians have well and truly been shafted!
Am not a train person but my fella is. I decided to click in this video because it had the words Lost Castleford Station. I grew up in Cas back in the 60's & 70's. We lived opposite the civic centre on Healdfield Road. Got to play in the old town hall which was derelict but still had the old gasmask's & other war related things inside. We got to witness it being demolished & the civic center being built on it place. On the walk from thee in to town you went under a very old 3 arch bridge. The arch on the right was some kind of empty building with circular brick opening for window high up. there was some other building just before the arch with a few steps & a green door if i remember rightly. That got knocked down & to the right of the arch was mostly bricks then. We would go play there. We noticed there was a small hole leading underground beneath the train track. So we began uncovering it. Once inside we saw stone steps & some old metal sign on the wall. It led up to the train tracks. If you do a research for Railway bridge Bridge Street, Castleford the 1st photo to come up should be a old black & white photograph. The view is showing from the town side heading out of Castleford. The 3rd arch is hidden by what was Mazies shop. The view from opposite side would give away far more information to what was there in years gone by.
Spooky. I was speaking to my partner the other day, saying that I thought there must be a town hall somewhere that looks like a court (and so is used in TV dramas, since I doubt they could film in a real court) and then this video randomly pops up.
Absolutely stunning building! Massive respect to the team of cleaning staff for their great care and attention... they've kept it looking beautiful. What a fascinating job that must be. Thank you Darren for taking us inside with you. Amazing video 😊❤
What p's me off is when they apply for a bigger ride to help Save the park (and jobs) the bloody council turn it down. It's a theme park FFS. Then when it's a wreck, turn down regeneration as a housing estate (people need houses) the bloody council turn it down again. Ridiculous councils. It's jobs and work.😡
