Blood is thicker than water is basically to remind us to put our families first. It also can mean that you need to treat your family/people as well or better than you do "your little friends," or other people out in the world. Because friends and acquaintances can be fleeting. Our families are the ones we should really be investing in and putting in work to preserve our relationships with and to heal, help, and inspire. Take care of our families and our people (meaning all of us, not just the one or two who see all of the dysfunction and actually want to do something about it as opposed to continuing to shove it under the rug to save face), and we take care of ourselves and our future.
