I think it's also an elbow to the rib on how bad English food was/is, and also a commentary on how mature his pallette must have become from eating whatever he could to keep from starving on his ship.
Besides comic relief, this is possibly a metaphor for Blackthorns intrinsic compatibility with Japanese culture. For example, it is shown many times in the series How unafraid and accepting of death he is.
I watched a whole NHK program on natto years ago at work. I had forgotten it entirely until this scene, I was so excited I remembered it I got out of my chair a bit too quickly and hurt myself 😂
My first thought when I saw the episode originally was that natto was something only women ate for some kind of beautifying effect. I have since learned what it actually is. I think Mariko and Fujiko started to accept Blackthorne more after he ate and enjoyed the natto.
I loved that he wasnt instantly disgusted by natto just for the yucks. Usually they have the guy gag or make a funny face but he actually enjoyed the dish
@@Someguythatlikespizza Legends says it is in fact really good dish,( i never had the opportunity to try it ) but TikTok made ppl think its something from the hell, because it is fermented fish, and if you open it without a bucket of water it smells like.... fermented fish xddd so really bad smell, but i heard if you get used to it, its not that bad, and swedish ppl eat it like canned tuna without water. we should try it
This was one of the funnier scenes in this show. I was really tickled. If anyone has ever tried natto, it's stinky and sticky and gooey. It's an acquired taste that even Japanese people don't universally like. So for a foreigner to insist on trying it, it's funny.
I've got no idea how that can be seen as 'stinky'. Yes, those are fermented soy beans, but I've never had any problems eating that, especially considering that it costs 40-100 yen for 3 small packages, and it really keeps you sated.
I'm Filipino and i actually really enjoy natto, everytime there's an opportunity for me to buy some I'd go for it. Watching this scene made me laugh because its something you either like or not. I wonder how the actor felt about it 🤔
Natto is a superfood And it’s vegan 🌱 I’m not a vegan I liked natto when I tried it It tasted more neutral to me Like mashed potatoes with no flavoring It’s like grits If I made it I’d pour melted brown sugar on it Or hot sauce lol
