I didn't realise he was that old. I thought he was my parents' age (60's, 70's) because my mom and her siblings used to talk about him being a neighbor, when they were kids and teenagers, so I thought they grew up together. Turns out dude was already a known singer/songwriter by then. A ton of those country western guys were living in that part of Nashville back then but they talked about Kristofferson like they knew him on a first-name basis.
@@davidw.2791 The reason people state this about Blade is because Marvel was nearly bankrupt, on the verge of selling everything and Blade more or less saved them, brought them to relevancy again. There's loads of Marvel shows/movies before Blade, that's not why they say it.
Wesley Snipes is an extremely accomplished martial artist, so all those moves were really him. He even had to slow down because the camera couldn't keep up with his speed. Also, Blade II is inexplicably directed by Guillermo del Toro. It's one of the most insane sequels in the history of cinema and I can't wait for you two to react to it.
Ah but we can't use Wesley as an idol because he had to be put in his place by -US Gestapo- officially known as ... The IRS. You know the organization that recently, with full support of you know who, got 80000 new armed employees. In what other countries in the world, is that the case... And then ask yourself do you want to be that list of countries?
_"Some motherfuckers are always trying to ice skate uphill."_ Translation: Some people are always foolishly attempting to do the impossible. Basically, it's Blade saying, "Trying to beat me is a fool's errand."
This movie was one of the greatest theater experiences I ever had. It was so fun, and Blade himself was so cool, and the entire audience I saw it with was totally into it all, audibly reacting in all the right ways.
I’m sure most people have told you guys by now but yes, Blade is one of the reasons why the MCU even exists, along with X-Men and Spider-Man. At the time, Blade was not marketed as a Marvel movie at all despite the character being owned by them. Also at the time, causal movie goers were not aware of Blade’s origins in the comics and just thought that he was just an original creation. In the early comics, Blade wasn’t even half-vampire. He was more or less a very trained dude in the art of armed and unarmed combat. But later on, they reconned him as the character he is today being born a half-vampire. He possessed all of the abilities of vampires but has none of their standard weaknesses such as sunlight, silver and garlic. But… he still ages as a human and he does inherit the thirst, which is why he prefers the strum that was created for him. He dislikes drinking human blood. So yes, it’s a Marvel movie but it’s pre-MCU.
17:02 Yeah that's Pearl and in case you might feel bad as to how he went out, he fed exclusively on the hearts of children
The serum that Blade takes it's just to supress the hunger for blood. He's not affected by sun like a regular vampire, since he took the traits of a vampire because his mother was bitten while he was in the womb. That's also why he's called "The Daywalker".
This is the movie that gave Marvel the success it needed to get the X-men movie made, with Spider-man following soon after. It all resulted in the wave of superhero movies we have been in for almost 25 years now. You can really thank Blade for teeing that up.
36:20 Those movements are capoeira, a Brazilian martial art that originated during slavery; slaves would practice self-defense but it just looked like dancing to their slave owners. Later, it would become the basis for breakdancing. Wesley Snipes is a proud capoeirista. He always used to sneak at least one or two moves into his action films.
One of the most underrated character actors of his generation. His big break was "Jimmy the cab driver" when MTV was at its zenith. He was also great in "Zodiac".
Also, I saw this movie in Elementary School lmao. My friends dad picked us up from school, and off we went to watch this hard R movie as 8 year olds 1990's were a different time, yo.
When Blade grabbed his Blade from being stuck in the wall, the sword movements he makes cut up the vampires to pieces. They didn't just fall apart from him bearing them up lol. That was one of the coolest scenes.
27:37 There was actually a deleted scene addressing this. Frost leads Karen to a large refrigerator he has in the apartment. Inside are several bodies of still living people providing blood. They should've kept this scene as it does explain Frost doesn't intend to turn EVERYONE in the world.
Two things to note: Blade only needs the serum to suppress his thirst, otherwise, all his vampire traits are genetic. In this movie, the vampires only die from silver when it pierces their heart or brain. So a silver stake to the shoulder will only hurt, not kill.
@TBR Schmitt As always most of the films you do are amazing, but the banter with you and Samantha and her take on many of the films is always worth the time. Thank you both :)
In 1999 I went to my first rave. Bunch of folks who'd never been asked how it was. My answer, "Remember the opening of Blade? Just like that only no blood, vampires, and I'm pretty sure Mr. Snipes wasn't there but couldn't be sure."
I'm one viewer that did not have a problem with Blade Trinity. I highly recommend you react to that one, too, for it's creative ending. Keep on keeping on, you two! 😊
Eric Brooks/Blade is a hybrid vampire half-human and half-immortal. In the opening scene the year of 1967 Vanessa Brooks was bitten by Deacon Frost while she was pregnant.
From what I remember, Blade biting you doesn't turn you since he's not a Vampire, but more like a Vampypr (half vampire.) RIP Kris Kristopherson. Please watch Blade 2 & 3!
Or Dhampir. Yes, he lacks the capability to spread the vampirification. He heals quickly and is stronger and faster than human (at the cost of needing blood or the serum) and has the fangs but he is not a vampire and he isn't allergic to silver or garlic either.
When it comes to hand to hand combat Wesley Snipes is the real deal. He has been training in the martial arts since age 12 and currently has a 5th degree black belt in Shotokan karate and a 2nd degree black belt in Hapkido. He is also accomplished in other martial arts styles including Brazilian Ju Jitsu and Kung Fu.
Hey Daniel and Sam, Blade was one of the first superhero movies to take the comic book material seriously and treated them with adult themes. -------- The success of Blade gave Hollywood a blueprint to have huge profits following the source material, maintain adult themes and incorporating the tortured back stories. -------- Nuff respect to Blade and Wesley Snipes for laying the ground work for darker superhero flicks.
No, it wasn't. They changed everything about the comics in this movie. People only pretend they took it serious because they know nothing of the comics before they changed the comics too.
He lets Quin get away because Quin is always doing things that attracts attention, and that helps leads him to Frost. Which is why the older pure bloods who are more low key and harder to track, dont like them and their ways. Essentially its, old money vs new money
Not to mention: son of a US Army General, Military Academy at West Point graduate, helicopter pilot and eventually an instructor at West Point before turning to music. Kris actually landed a helicopter on Johnny Cash’s property to give him a demo tape that helped kickstart Kris’ career.
33:33 I've owned the DVD for this movie since before Blade 2 was released so I've seen it with the subtitles a million times. Karen is absolutely saying "Don't stop". She knows Blade needs to be at full power to win and she knows she can cure herself. Her commitment to helping Blade win (and getting her revenge) is absolute. She steals a whole bunch of hospital equipment, she creates a new (bio) weapon for Blade, _she creates a vampire cure,_ she insists on coming along and learning, she makes Deacon Frost lose his cool, she puts her ex Curtis out of his Psuedo-Zombie misery, she gives up her blood to empower Blade for the final fight and, she takes out Frost's girlfriend. Karen put in a lot of work and I hope we see her again
It takes a real badass black man to say a line about ice skating and make it awesome (albeit it's still darn silly, haha). P.S. This was just a thing Snipes said in a meeting once - not verbatim, but about someone ice skating uphill - and the writer and/or director loved it so much they put it in the movie.
This came out when I was a teenager, and was an incredibly enjoyable theater experience. 😂 Definitely give Blade II and Blade Trinity a shot. They aren't bad, and Ryan Reynolds practically carried the third one by himself. His performance is great.
Whoa what a surprise this one is. How have you never seen Blade?? I love you two so much I’m watching the Dodgers/Padres game on mute because I can’t wait for this reaction. I LOVE Blade!!! Also, watch Blade 2 someday.
Sorry the copyright crew is giving you so much trouble. Glad to see you’re keeping your sense of humor about it. And glad to see another reaction. I never bothered with Blade when it came out but it was fun to “see” it through your reaction. Hopefully your Spooky month continues smoothly. And yes RIP Kris Kistofferson. ❤❤❤
RIP Kris. The movie the build the mcu. My mom got me into this film. The movie was a suprise hit when it came out. Another great Snipes film is New Jack City.
More vamp films ripe for reaction; 30 Days Of Night. Near Dark. Let The Right One In ( or it's really good American remake, Let Me In) Bram Stoker's Dracula
The beginning of Marvel's golden age on film with the first character of the comics to have a box-office smash. The 2nd Rated-R movie for a Marvel character after The Punisher (1989). Undoubtedly the first, real kick-a** Vampire movie. Following his first mainstream appearances on Spider-Man:The Animated Series (1994-1998). From the darkside of the Marvel Universe, inspired by blaxploitation films (a la' Shaft & Blacula) and debuting 50 plus years ago in 'The Tomb of Dracula' comics as one of Drac's many foes. Prior to being casted as Blade, Wesley Snipes as actor/producer was involved with developing Black Panther (formerly a Sony property). Frustrated with how to make BP, he received the BLADE script and said yes to it. Snipes had never known that Blade or Black Panther were both from Marvel. The Blade trilogy was written by David S. Goyer (Man of Steel, The Dark Knight Trilogy). The director Stephen Norrington (effects background) did a great job with this. Stephen Dorff (The Gate, SFW, Immortals) doesn't get enough credit as one of the best vampire villains on screen, Deacon Frost. The blending of everything in this film is phenomenal. His origins to the world he's lives, breaths and hunts in. No expense spared on blood, gore, suspense, action and drama. Cool merch with the prequel comic, Blade #0 to the soundtrack by TVT records and the PS1/Game Boy Color games. Part 2 from 2002 is great and Part 3 from 2004 is controversial. At the end of the day, it's great to see more love and appreciation for the Daywalker. RIP indeed to musician/actor Kristofferson as Whistler.
This was the turning point for Marvel characters in cinema. Snipes doing this film and the next two showed that these characters and ideas could make money. The first and second film are still incredibly solid, imo. The third is a bit of a mixed bag, even if Jessica Biel was bad ass and Ryan Reynolds was basically playing Deadpool in all but name.
Hard to imagine nowadays, but by the end of the 90s Marvel were close to bankruptcy and after gems like Superman IV, Supergirl, Howard the Duck, Steel and Batman & Robin comic book movie adaptations seemed beyond ever to make a comeback. Blade and X - Men changed all of that.
More Wesley Snipes top picks: "White Men Can't Jump", "Money Train" both with Woody Harrelson, "Passanger 57", "Drop Zone", "New Jack City". Also, Snipes was in a movie you guys watched on the channel, "Major League".
In an EXCELLENT twist, Stephen Doriff became the original spokesman for a hip new product about 15 years ago called Blu, the first mass marketed E-Cigarette. The best part about his campaign was that Vaping was safer than smoking - and most importantly, you can do it anywhere! at the bar, a basketball game, in an airplane; all with no smell! We know how that went.
Hello Friends👋I've been waiting for this one to get Approved😅and I'm Happy You Enjoyed it as much as I Hoped You would!👍This IS the Movie that Opened the Flood Gates, and has (since) given Us ever other Marvel / Superhero Movie that We have today!💥"There's Only Ever Going to Be One Blade"😎and Wesley Snipes is it!👌PLEASE Watch "Blade II" ASAP🙏not only is it Better than this, but it's even More Bad@$$ too!⚔(LOL)
Blade was an obscure Marvel character, but Wesley Snipes is such a badass in the role, and his Blade really paved the way for today's Marvel movies. When Blade came out in 1998, movie studios really didn't wanna do superhero movies after the massive failure of Batman & Robin the previous year. No one knew how important Blade would be, as its success set the table for X-Men in 2000, then Spider-Man in 2002, and ultimately the founding of Marvel Studios and the start of the MCU with Iron Man in 2008. All of that can be traced back to Blade because it proved that there was an interest and an audience for these movies as long as they were done well and they didn't treat the source material like it was a joke.
I didnt know he was considered obscure because in the 90s Spider-Man cartoon, he makes an appearance for a few episodes as Spider-Man is tracking Morbeus or Morpheus, not sure which one it is
Definitely watch Blade 2 it's go's to a new level I watched this back when it came out because it was a vampire film but it based on a Marvel comic but they changed certain things from the comics.
