Blade Runner 2: Director Denis Villeneuve Talks “Autonomous” Follow-Up, Harrison Ford, and More

It’s hard enough for a director to make one piece of landmark cinema in a specific genre, let alone two. But that’s what Ridley Scott did with Alien and Blade Runner, both of which are now considered bona fide classics. Scott finally got to make a sequel (of sorts) to the former with Prometheus a few years ago, and around the same time the filmmaker also announced that he had a desire to make a Blade Runner sequel as well, with screenwriter Hampton Fancher returning to pen the screenplay.
Development on the sci-fi follow-up continued in the background for a few years, until it was announced that Scott was no longer planning on directing the film-though he found an incredibly talented filmmaker to sign on in his stead: Denis Villeneuve. Between Incendies, Prisoners, Enemy, and now the impeccable thriller Sicario, Villeneuve has proven to be an exciting, unique talent working in the film world today, and the prospect of the notoriously bleak filmmaker taking on the world of Blade Runner-with cinematographer Roger Deakins in tow no less-was incredibly enticing.
So when Steve sat down with Villeneuve recently at the Toronto International Film Festival to talk about Sicario, he also took the time to ask the filmmaker about Blade Runner 2. Villeneuve reiterated that Harrison Ford is starring in the project, and revealed that Ford was set before Villeneuve became involved:
“To be very honest with you, Harrison was part of the project before I arrived. He was attached to the project right from the start with Ridley. I met him and he’s honestly one of the nicest human beings I’ve met and is one of my favorite actors of all time, so for me it’s a lot of pleasure.”
Speaking of pressure, Villeneuve admitted that he was initially hesitant to take on such an iconic property:
“It’s more than nervous, it’s a deep fear. I mean when I heard that Ridley Scott wanted to do another movie in the Blade Runner universe, at first my reaction was that it’s a fantastic idea, but it may be a very bad idea. I’m among the hardcore fans of Blade Runner. Blade Runner is one of my favorite movies of all time. It’s a movie that is linked with my love and passion for cinema. I’m coming from a small town in Quebec where, at that time, there was no internet and the way to be in contact with movies were those American fan magazines like Fantastic Films and Starlog and I still remember the shock, the impact of seeing the first frames, the first pictures coming out of Blade Runner. Me and my friends were in awe, so excited and the movie was such a strong cinematic experience. A new way of seeing sci-fi.
For me it’s like a monument. So when I realized one day that they put in front of me the Blade Runner project screen play, for me I was very moved to have this honor to read the screenplay, but I accepted to do it because I felt that Hampton Fancher, Ridely Scott and Michael Green did a fantastic job on the screenplay. It’s a very powerful screenplay. And I felt that it made sense to me and I had the Ridley Scott blessing. But you ask if I hesitated. I hesitated massively. It took me a lot of time to say yes. Not because I didn’t believe in it, because I was like ‘Who am I to dare to touch that?’ And at the same there’s a part of me that said, ‘I’m a hardcore fan, I don’t want to fuck that up.’”

Blade Runner is my favorite film. I have been dreading the idea of a sequel forever. HOWEVER - this guy, in this interview, just said everything I'd want to hear from a director setting out to make a Blade Runner sequel. So if this baby must happen? Then I am very reassured that Denis Villenueve is in charge of its growth and delivery! :)

I met Denis and worked for him on one of his music videos. He is genuine and a very committed craftsman. Really glad (as one of the guys with a baseball bat) that this project is in his hands. Bladerunner is one of my five favorite movies.

Have faith too ! Such nice work so far, let's see if Denis plays it as ambiguous as Sicario, witch is a kind of human Blade Runner btw, just playing around Mexico borders...

1. At least 90% night time with a gritty atmosphere. 2. A score relative to what Vangelis created. 3. Rated R 4. No stupid ass narration. 'The Final Cut' is the best version to use as inspiration.

Thankfully with the first teaser debuting, he's stayed true to the look of the original, AND at least for the teaser.. he's stayed true to the soundtrack. ala the great Vangelis. This movie must stay true to the original. its not a movie where a director will say 'screw the original IM gonna make my own bladerunner' this is a film you stay the coarse.
@KORUN666

Yes, right, but anyway, it's Sir R. Scott, who wrote the script he has worked on it for 2 or 3 yrs, and was at one point going to direct it, then, when you see the trailer, it's obvious it will follow up what has been done , as per R. Scott says in many interviews, the story will be relevant regarding the original one. It'not the same as it was for Alien, where hollywood didn't even ask R.Scott to make sequel and give them to Cameron etc.., it's a Scott free project in the first place ^^

Admittedly, I've only seen "Arrival" and "Secario" by Denis Villeneuve. But, I am excited about his working on "Blade Runner: 2049". I think he will honor the original as well as bring new life to the Blade Runner universe.

There is another video on YT with Denis Villeneneuve, Entitled " 'Blade Runner' sequel's chance of success 'very narrow' says director "... I say: - Its financial success is certain - Critics will praise it - Public will love it at large (even if some might not get its depth) - its cinematography quality is obviously very high Its chance of success is extremely high: crew, music, actors, budget, director, writer, fx, storyline, marketing, new technologies ... ... and 35 years of hype ... I am the ultimate Blade Runner fan, and I will not enter the theater with a bat but with hope § emotions ... I already feel Mr Villeneuve "nailed it" :-)

He made Prisoners, so there is hope that this may work, but I remain tepidly curious for the time being. Sequels are risky, and Blade Runner kept a mystery that maybe a lot of people still want to hold.

I'd like to see an even edgier, equally dark film. Maybe do a large portion of the dialog in city speak with subtitles.

So one rumor claims that the title of the new movie may be Blade runner: Androids Dream. This title works because it refs PKD's novel but on the other hand, Ridley distinctly made the comment (during film production) that "Android" was a taboo word, claiming that anyone who uses that "gets his head broken with a baseball bat." Instead he referred to them as "Replicants" because they were actually flesh & blood rather than a man-made robot. What's it gonna be Ridley?

In fact, as Denis says, the beauty of Blade Runner relies on few seconds... chocking beauty impact. But the film is a total mess, the more u dig and get out the underworld, punk guts fascination... which can last very long, maybe twenty years in a life, yes ! Then u understand the film is a tremendous, sometime lost, fight to get out of a plexiglas wreckage... and is a wreckage... At first we like the funky characters trying to get out of it (and it's a huge garbage can they're in), and somewhat love those characters very much, instead of looking at the film. Still not that hard to love some epic pieces (the last fight), despite understanding it's also a big trendy Zeppelin of the 80's. The best for number 2.

I can't believe the interviewer (u know who u are) said "I have to go" not once, not twice but three times! Sorry, but it comes off as soooooooo unprofessional, especially to the person you are interviewing. Don't you realize you are taking up Denis' time? Once again, I'm sorry for even mentioning it but someone has to! (& I hope your superiors at Collider mention it to you, too)
