For those of us who saw the original movie in theatres, there was no expectation of a sequel. It didn’t really do well at the box office initially (it was competing with the likes of “E.T.”) so there was no immediate incentive for the studio to make a sequel. It wasn’t until it was eventually elevated to cult status that development of a sequel began. This film was an unanticipated gift to fans of the original. The fact that it turned out so good was an extra bonus. BTW, you’re one of the few reactors who recognized the ‘Peter and the Wolf’ theme. Congrats.

Interesting. After watching the first one this last year I did think there should be a sequel, but I can see why some would not expect or want one. Probably was best to wait 40 years before attempting it! And I am a professional musician by day so it is literally my job to know that Prokofiev ;)

Those circular things at the beginning are mirror arrays used for harvesting solar power. There are 3 of them that you can easily see from I-15 in SoCal, about 5 miles SW of Primm at the Nevada border.

@okchristina 23 дня назад
Oh I think I've seen those! But maybe they added to them with CGI for the movie?? Or maybe they just look different from the 15?

@@okchristina I live in Oregon now, so it’s been a while since the last time I drove out that way. I would assume the Blade Runner versions were made to look even more futuristic than the real world examples, but they are still a very impressive sight to behold. On a sunny day, all the surrounding mirrors get oriented to reflect sunlight toward the top of the central towers, which causes them to light up so incredibly bright. You can see them from super far away when they’re lit up like that.

Her look, her desire to exist, and even her voice. She was epic (although a little scary!)

Blade Runner 2049 (2017) "All the courage in the world cannot alter fact." Fun Fact: The Wallace Corporation's alert sound is from Peter And The Wolf (2006). Music Enthusiast Fact: The final scene in the snow uses the Tears In Rain (1982) theme from Blade Runner (1982), referencing Roy Batty's death scene. Whiskey Apology Fact: While shooting a fight scene, Harrison Ford accidentally punched Ryan Gosling in the face. As an apology to his co-star, Ford invited Gosling to share a bottle of Scotch whisky with him and mooned him. Method Actor Fact: In order to portray the blind character of Niander Wallace, Jared Leto decided to fit himself with opaque contact lenses that made it impossible for him to see. Jared Leto used Silicon Valley tech investors and inventors that he personally knows as examples of how Niander Wallace would behave. CGI Double Fact: A visual effects company worked for a full year on the scene in which Rachael (Sean Young) appears exactly as she did 35 years earlier in Blade Runner (1982). Stand-in actress Loren Peta acted out the scene and her appearance was changed through CGI to resemble Young. Rachael's voice was provided by a sound double. Director Denis Villeneuve purposely limited the number of Rachael's shots and gave the visual effects team ample time to work, to avoid the criticism that the digitally re-created Carrie Fisher and Peter Cushing in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) had drawn. He said the result was mesmerizing.

I always try to see if the quote you begin with makes it through my editing process. This one did! I actually had guessed it might one you used. Ha! I also definitely caught the Prokofiev. The brief chord that is played when Joo is powered down is also from the suite but is the penultimate chord to the repeat of the opening theme. I must say that I was very underwhelmed by the CGI of Rachel! And they worked so hard on it. Oh well.

Good catch on the Russian writing. Additional Russian elements include the Nabokov book and the Peter and the Wolf tune. I love Deckard ending the film with that little quarter smile in the manner of the Mona Lisa. It’s also fun to compare the Villeneuvisms that appear both in this film and the DUNE films, including the “floaty things” noted, a flying vehicle crashing with astonishing momentum, face bounce, etc.

Ah yes, the Prokofiev was also Russian! I am used to that piece being more general and not associated with a certain country. It’s used for demonstrations of classical music for children mostly. I also liked the little corner smile from Ford at the end :) And yes of course now that makes sense that some of the sounds and feel is the same as Dune since it’s the same director! Duh!! I keep forgetting.

@@okchristina And of course, Villeneuve's "Arrival" features a BIG floaty thing.

There was no waiting pain for the sequel since unlike SW a sequel wasn't announced for a long time! Twenty years later there was the hope that there wouldn't be a remake messing the first one up (after CGI effects were cheap to make)! All in all everything progressed the right way! 🙂 And I think 'The Last Starfighter' still holds up quite well excl. the 80s cheese!
@okchristina
@okchristina 2 месяца назад
I dunno - I felt like it was quite open ended and I would have thought all those years a sequel was expected. But I think the anxiety of if it was bad or good might have been the dominant feeling all that time!
@SubZeroCommander
@SubZeroCommander 2 месяца назад
@@okchristina I think the directors cut made it feel open ended for sure, revealing that Deckard is a replicant! I've only seen that version decades later & up to this point it was just him vanishing with the replicant girl & all was happily ever after! 😄

There were 3 Blade Runner short films released 2 months prior to BR 2049 going to worldwide cinema release. I'd recommend all 3 being watched before this one for anyone interested in the 2 major motion films. It gives the viewer an idea of what happened in the film's universe during the 30 years between the 2 Harrison Ford films. Link to youtube shorts in chronological order below.

The loud and intrusive music you played over your quiet talking at the end made it difficult to hear what you were saying. The only reason your audience is watching at that point is to hear what you have to say and you are making it hard for them to do that. A pity.

You’re right - the volume levels were somehow off so thank you for the feedback. They are now fixed moving forward!
