Can we all agree that the "tears in rain" speech is one of the finest pieces of emotive dialog put to film, it just encapsulates the films message perfectly and the framing and cinematography of that seen is just beautiful

My favorite part of this movie is the main antagonist's death scene. When he saves Dekard from falling to his death. I didn't understand why when I first saw the film. Then I realized it was because he didn't want to die alone. that and his final monologue demonstrated perfectly that replicants were in fact people. When I understood that, I found the scene hauntingly beautiful. It almost brought me to tears the second time I watched the film.

I think the romance between Decker and Rachel is meant to blur Decker's moral code further through the film for the audience. If emotions are the one thing that differentiate replicants from humans, how does Rachel feel love? This is meant to be the character moment that carries Decker's struggle up until the "tears in the rain" speech, and in my opinion, it does it perfectly.
@austincarlson9270
@austincarlson9270 Год назад
Exactly. He initially sees that she can elicit emotion after he basically tells her she's a replicant, in which challenges his view on replicants, and whether they are truly sub-human. The death scene of the antagonist was so emotionally driven because of that realization from earlier.

I watched it three times until i liked it. after the fist two i didn't understand much because of a young age and lack of attention. Third time it was the director's cut and it absolutely blew me away. Especially as I was a Philip K. Dick fan at the time already. I consider this movie to be the best sci-fi ever made. Roy Batty's soliloquy makes me tear up every time. The music by Vangelis is fantastic. The vuisuals and colors of the director's cut are very unusual for today's standards as they're all practical effects and steam. Steam and fog are key features to this movie as many things are let to your imagination which is also a great trick. Just a beautiful piece of art overall.

The thing with the original movie is that there's a lot of things that need a deeper explanation for the viewers that haven't read the book to understand, but then the things that are soo obvious get explained to detail by the dialogues. So it's corny and pretty much childish but at the same time intriguing and engaging. That's the best way I can put it.

Cristobal Olguin see I wanted to have that exact reaction. I don't think I've given a film enough chances as I have given Bladerunner. I've never wanted to love a story more than this one. I really want to..... On a thematic, visual, audio and technical level it's a masterpiece. But the story itself....damn! I just couldn't get invested in Deckard's character, who takes the biggest chunk of screen time - and don't even get me started on the romance.... I think if it had been told from Roy Batty's POV it woulda been much more interesting for me. I found the character and performance of Batty and pretty much all the Replicants in this movie infinitely more compelling - maybe that was the point? If that's the case then the journey getting there for me as a viewer was agonizing.... I sincerely hope 2049 is the one that wins me over completely! It took me over 10 viewings and over 30 years. I saw it with my father when the Director's Cut was released in theaters and again when the Final Cut was released in theaters and I still did NOT like it. I did learn to appreciate it as a grown man. I just don't believe it's a film that can be truly appreciated by kids because it's not straight up science fiction like Star Wars or Star Trek. It's about Life & Death, and kids don't really learn about that until they get a few more years under their belts. I bought it on blu ray for $5 at Best Buy and I still watch it, trying to discover a layer to the mystery and wonder. Something to add to my own appreciation. This is a Film for those who have an appreciation for life and enjoying each and every second of it's experiences. This is a True piece of cinematic art. And you're right, Chris. It is indeed very "philosophical."

I’ve always loved it, but my love has grown with each viewing. I bought the directors cut on DVD and liked it much more than the theatrical cut. Years later while my wife and I were still just dating I screened it for her telling her she was in for a treat. This was one of the greatest SF films of all time I told her. Well, she hated it but agreed to see it again just in case. Well, she still hated it. Years later we had made plans to see 2049 on a Sunday in the theater on a huge screen so I bought the Final Cut on iTunes and we watched it on that Saturday night. Well, maybe it’s the improved visuals, maybe it’s the wider aspect ratio, but she loved it. So, there, another person who had to see it three times in order to appreciate it. Somethings just need to age a bit like fine wine.

Chris, it's the first time seeing you upload a video so completely devoid of content... What happened here? We only learnt you plan covering the _Blade Runner_ sequel, which don't get me wrong, I'm thankful about. Yes, you changed your opinion on the original movie, but made no attempt to explain why - and assigning a score at the end does not make this a proper review, not even remotely. Repeated viewings can enhance our appreciation for a great film. We already knew that. Sad to say, this felt like a me-too, or a teaser piece :(
@thefirstbourne149
@thefirstbourne149 7 лет назад
+Jason Doe What do you mean he never explained it? I think FOUR viewings on its own is an explanation in itself, especially if the film still had one itching quality that he can't get enough of. Seriously, there's nothing suspicious, and it's not like it's that sudden a change in opinion. That's probably more me than Stuckmann, but more because there's movies I wouldn't have liked unless I had a film mind, which I do now. Take...Hugo for example...that's right (**audience booing**)!! Ok...maybe more for me than for everyone else, come on...it's not a movie for the super, super, young ones. A kid turns into a life-size automaton! Visually interesting, but frickin' weird, man!!

Everybody has a problem with a movie they have to watch more than once. That's not the same thing as changing your opinion because now the majority likes this movie.

Chris, the romance totally makes sense if Deckard is a human, not a replicant. This is true for many aspects of the film. I can only think the film writers thought Deckard was a human, whatever Ridley Scott thought. The conversation between Roy and Deckard makes more sense with Deckard being human, as does Deckards inferior strength to Roy.
@cinthiamunoz3195
@cinthiamunoz3195 7 лет назад
Omnes Omnibus Actually we don't know if all the models are as strong as the nexus 6, because they were especifically created to be soldiers. So it can go either way, also Rachael didn't know she herself was a replicant, she thought she was human as Deckard untio that moment.
@omnesomnibus2845
@omnesomnibus2845 7 лет назад
Technically that's true, but I go by a sort of Occam's razor. If you have to do mental gymnastics to explain things because they aren't on the screen, but an alternate theory requires fewer mental gymnastics, it's probably the right one. If they sent a single inferior replicant to hunt down a team of very dangerous replicants, and never made explicit his realizing that he was a replicant, what story are they telling? Conversely, the best human replicant hunter they have is not up to these new ones, and more to the point he is our proxy for recognizing how inhuman and bigoted humans can be, and how human these robots are, and to reflect upon what makes something human, worthy of love, and good. Let's consider Rachel and Deckard. The idea that a human could evolve his thinking from regarding robots as advanced toasters to lusting for one, to then loving her, is a profound statement. The idea of a replicant slowly realizing he is a replicant and developing a relationship with another one (who perversely does not trust her emotions while he does, who perversely doubts her identity with her dialogue, which he does not, etc) is actually just regressive, and promotes the idea of segregation. Humans for humans, and robots for robots! Really??! You get the idea. Philip K. Dick was all about ideas of consciousness and reality. This movie is not his story, but it derives its profundity from the same sources.

Here's my interpretation of the Romance scene: Deckard gave Rachel a "second-chance". Remember, the whole point of this movie is having a "second- chance" which makes more sense when you analyse the "tears in rain" soliloquy (Roy longed for an extended life, as he mourned the loss of precious moments in the wake of his death). Rachel was probably drowning in a sea of existentialist thoughts, after the shocking truth that her life was a lie. She was disillusioned, thinking that she's just a replicant, undeserving of life. But Deckard introduced to her a new life - one where she is loved and protected, where the fact that she is a replicant doesn't matter. Deckard simply taught her one thing - that the rest of her life is NOT meaningless, that she can still be given a second chance. In order to do so, Deckard had to use force. This lack of consent might seem controversial at first, but this is very important for Rachel. When she says "kiss me", and Deckard does so, you can see tears of joy rolling down her cheeks, as she experiences a reawakening from within her. The theme of "second chance" even continues with Deckard, in the final scene, when he realizes his own humanity is ambiguous. However, he doesn't care whether he is human or replicant, because either way, he has a limited lifespan, which he must use to his fullest. Let's talk about how Roy influences Deckard. Roy only had days of life remaining, yet he hunts after a dream that is inherently unachievable. That was his fatal flaw - that he had completely wasted the reminder of his time instead of living it to its fullest. In his last moments, he reminisces the glorious moments of his life. And even though these moments will be "lost in time, like tears in rain", he did manage to pass on one important thing to Deckard - his mistake, which Deckard is not to reenact. Hence, Deckard escapes with Rachel at the end, instead of hanging around trying to figure out whether he is human, trying to solve his problems and what not.

finally, someone points out that deckard doesn't have superior strength, like all the other nexus 6. plus replicants can tell humans from replicants. thus roy's speech: "I've seen things YOU PEOPLE would not believe" really only makes sense if deckard's human. great speech btw. his being replicant renders the question of what makes a human being human null in void. at least to me. isn't it implied that nexus models 1-5 are extinct and the 6s are it?

I feel the same about this movie. I never got it as a kid because I never saw the original and back in the early 90s my high school showed us the then recently released directors cut of the film. I couldn't follow it then. I bought a cheap dvd later in life when it was on special. I watched it again and again and it grew on me. I finally got the 5 disc Blu Ray and it is my most fond Blu Ray in my collection as I have watched the original cut and the Final Cut back to back and was glued to the new making of documentary Dangerous Days. If Decker is a replicant his "flawed" romance makes ALOT more sense.
@emiliomonroy7929
@emiliomonroy7929 3 года назад
I read it as: He forced her to have a romance with him taking advantage of the fact that she is a replicant, she asked him if he would hunt her down, he said no, but In reality he did, why? Because he was conflicted with his view on the humanity of replicants thanks to her, he showed before that he didn't want to hurt her feelings even tho replicants cant really feel, so he's trying to see if she can feel the very human thing called attraction, that maybe because he doesn't understand emotions that well either since he is a replicant and he's trying to validate his own humanity through her, so its not a real romance and its not supposed to be, is a romance between two people with a very small and fucked up capacity for emotion and incredible lack of a sense of self, whats the saying? You cant love someone without loving yourself first, so how can you love yourself if you don't even know who you are in the first place? So that makes me think that its completely irrelevant if Decker is a replicant or not, if he is that explains everything, but if he's not then he may as well be since he cant even tell what the difference is

Whether Deckard is a Replicant or not based on only a film viewing depends on your cut. There are some cuts that say he is, some that say he isn't. Scott says he is. Ford says he isn't. Personally, I say no. But mine is steeped behind logic and making sense of the overall story and the themes, so it's understandable that Scott doesn't get it. The whole movie is about humanity. When we meet Deckard he is barely human. Surviving on ramen and booze. He's depressed and unemotional. He's forced into hunting more Replicants...something he's clearly not into but is too reluctant to fight it. As the movie continues we see him destroy these creations that are desperate to live...the exact opposite of how Deckard has been existing. As the movie gets closer to it's climax, Deckard finds love, finds more humanity within him and yet he still is seeking the destruction of Replicants. He get's his ass utterly HANDED to him (again, not a Replicant) and is almost killed. But Roy Batty in his final moments has summoned up more humanity than Rick Deckard has shown through the entire movie in order save him. THIS IS THE MOVIE. If Deckard is a Replicant, the whole movie falls apart.

But... ''Due to its cultural impact and significance I'm giving it an A+'' I feel that I lost the grasp of your reviews. I always followed them with sincerity but with this kind of answer after you said that you had to see it many times (without really explaining why you disliked it in the first place) just to finally accept it as being a classic (so that deserves an A+) caught me off guard. Even if you liked it afterwards you said that it had a flaw with the romantic development and even after that statement you gave it an A+. I feel as if I lost a good reviewer and found a marketer. someone who just sponsors movies that came and/or will come out.

Oh just to add Deckerd is human how can he still be around in 2049 when nexus 6 state of the art models only had a short life span?
@88feji
@88feji 5 лет назад
Deckard and Rachel are experimental models ... they are given longer life spans simply because they are not as much of a physical threat as Roy Batty as they are not imbued with superhuman capabilities like Roy.. They are not imbued with superhuman abilities because humans want to make them think they are human (when they are actually replicants), you cannot give them superhuman abilities as it will immediately arouse their suspicion about their real identity ... If Deckard knows he's a replicant, he will probably switch side due to sympathy for his own kind and betray his humans employers.. Not sure why Rachel is given false memories of Tyrell's niece, maybe he just misses his niece or something and wants to use his immense technology to bring her back to life in one way or another ...

It took me a while to develop an appreciation for Blade Runner as well. As a teenager I just kind of liked it. I first watched it after playing and beating the 1997 PC game also called Blade Runner from Westwood. Yes my first exposure to the Blade Runner universe was the PC game, and at the time I liked it more than the film. I've never seen the original cut with narrations and voice overs, and I'm glad I haven't. I've seen the directors cut on VHS and the final cut on Blu Ray. After seeing the final cut on Blu Ray I can say Blade Runner is in my top five list of all-time favorite films. I looks absolutely amazing. Something about the dark retro-futuristic style grows more appealing with time. It was cleaned up and tweaked so nicely it's possible to appreciate the setting much more than before, and the themes of the movie's story stick with you. After a viewing I find myself quietly sitting and pondering what I've just watched for several minutes every time, lol. On another note I personally believe Deckard is human. If he was a replicant he would have to be a very unique one since he doesn't seem to posses the superior abilities replicants normally have, often coming out second best in physical confrontations for example. Also he has clearly aged well beyond the replicant lifespan of 4 years since he is in the new film set 30 years later. Furthermore, I personally find the story and conclusion of the first film more meaningful thinking of him as a human, so that's certainly my preference. I guess it was left open to interpretation and likely deliberately so. Anyway, one of the best and most influential films of all time, and I absolutely love it now.

Same. The pacing felt totally off for me and it feels like nothing happens for most of the movie or the scene keeps going even though its main point is already conveyed. The movie itself felt like it only had the idea of the replicants and then stretched it out without really adding anything to it. I felt like the movie could've been 30 minutes and it wouldn't have lost anything of significance. In the end I didn't find most of the movie interesting at all (although maybe that's due to how much sci-fi we're exposed to these days). Heck, maybe I just don't see what's so amazing about the point its making. Or I'm just dumb and doesn't see the layers behind what I found to be shallow exploration of ideas. The visuals and atmosphere of the movie are amazing though. First time I watched it I couldn't believe it was made in 1982.

+Hudrow Portnof Sorry but no way can 30min do justice to Blade Runner, every single scene took the time it needed to express itself fully ... if you really understand what is going on in each scene and the mind-boggling amount of visual cues the director poetically (and sometimes subtly) imbued in each scene, you would appreciate how rich and detailed the movie is ... stripping away anything means you're taking away something beautiful and meaningful ... There's no way you can edit down scenes like the Roy-Deckard chase, the Deckard Zhora chase, the death of Pris, every single flying car scenes, the replicants finding their way to their maker, Deckard and Rachel's meetings etc etc ... all of these scenes are essential and serves a story telling purpose ... if you understand why they're there, you would see the movie as one travelling at a brisk pace, there's no draggy inconsequential things going on just to fill time ...

Another great review. I have to say, i dont generally listen to anyones advice on a film as i tend to love what everyone hates and hate what everyone loves. There are exceptions of course, but Mr. Stuckman i thoroughly enjoy your breakdowns, reviews and opinions and find myself in agreement with you the majority of the time. This is the only film channel on RU-vid i watch and recommend. Thank you sir.

I liked the film as I watched it but didn't understand everything that was going on until the ending with the Tears in the Rain scene. That completely changed the way I looked at the film and made me realize that the struggle of life in general, human or replicant, was at the center. It was a beautiful realization and one that for me, made the romance make so much more sense. Life is life, love is love. Conventions are turned upside down then up again to show that everything turns full circle in this film. And it's gorgeous. And don't even get me started on the SOUNDTRACK AND THE VISUALS
@jram4617
@jram4617 Год назад
You call it a romance? It is actually a rape that couldn't be reported due to Rachel being an Android. It would ensue as a romance simply out of survival. If Deckard is a replicant, then what he did with Rachel was far removed from any romance. If he was human, then his instincts for intimacy were misconstrued. Either way, it was never a romance initially. That scene was poignant in that Decker reached a curve that was now directing him on a different trajectory

The FirstBourne yeah I know... But I've watched enough of Stuckmann's "analysis" video to know there really wasn't much effort in this one. This video isn't even 6 minutes long... It gives the impression that he "had" to talk about Bladerunner coz every other successful RU-vidr is doing the same thing. It's lyk he couldn't make up his mind on whether to do a full-on review or video essay, so it ended up being an underwhelming mess.... I love Stuckmann, I think he's got integrity and a passion for cinema. But I sense something fishy going on here. A flawed masterpiece gets an A+ coz countless other movies have been influenced by it, thereby justifying the A+?? IDK, just sounds to me like Chris going "I've got to let my followers know I love Bladerunner despite a gaping flaw I've always had with it". It's clearly obvious the romance bit bothers him to date, and the romance is a major plotpoint too . Then there's the clickbaiting title that really didn't go that deep into rewatching films. Chris would have gone way more in depth to justify his thoughts on the film (what did he learn from each viewing? What changed and remained? etc). At least that's the Stuckmann I know lol

Michael Otis your acting like a child if i may say, you think Chris is the only one that watched blade runner 4 times to understand and appreciate it like many others, including me. So your pretty much describing everyone that watches blade runner for the first time and didn't like it, but would later repeat it multiple of times to finally appreciate it. I went through that process and so did many others. First i tried to force myself but just gave up but as time went on, the music, sound design, atmosphere, cinematography and theme is what i fell in love with. Then i watched it for the 3rd time and loved it. Not because our society told me to like it, but i found my own meaning which this film does have. If you didn't like blade runner even after multiple of viewing, that's also fine, you won't be crucified like your saying.

@88feji
@88feji 4 года назад
I love the chemistry between Deckard and Rachel ... I think most people defines chemistry in a very typical way, maybe people really should expand their mindsets about what human chemistry can be ... Deckard and Rachel had loads of fireworks I think ... firstly the meeting at Tyrell Corp they were kind of sizing each other up in a slightly antagonizing way because Rachel asked him about accidentally killing a real human and he takes that as an insult of his professionalism (when she's just concerned that he might kill her in case the VK test says she's a replicant) .... And later he mercilessly pop her bubble about her not being a human but he quickly soften when he sees her tearful emotional reaction , he realise not all replicants are cold blooded unemotional cyborgs, this one is soft and vulnerable ... And lastly at the piano, he wanted to kiss her but she who has already accepted her replicant identity feels guilty about betraying her own kind by kissing a replicant hunter so she tried to run away... but he refuse to let her leave and got a bit violent but thats because he's already used to being violent towards replicants in his line of work as a replicant hunter, he quickly softens to assure her after realising he's scaring her ... its definitely an awkward love making scene but thats because of their very unique status as replicants ...

Lack of chemistry? Don't you get it 🤷‍♂️ They're replicants. Although they appear to be human on the outside, on the inside they're just robots. Artificial.

Blade Runner gives us something new, every time we go back to it. Depending on the attention we grant it, we’ll see new streets, neons, mannerisms, score cues and endless amounts of gifts all the time!!! It evolves. That’s what makes it an ongoing classic!!!!

I fell in love with this movie the very first time I saw it, as a teenager, in it's first release in 1982 and till this very second in my life I still believe that it is the very best science fiction movie (or movie in general) ever made. I've seen it over 100 times, in all it's different versions, I still love the original more than any other, with Ford's narration (it gave it a film noir detective sort of feel in a futuristic movie, I thought it was original and risqué), Vangelis soundtrack, Rutger's performance, the look, the feel, the vision, the story... It is a masterpiece.

Deckard being replicant makes this story stripped from the emotions. If he's not human being finding his humanity via encounter with androids than what's the point? If he is another replicant than there's no stake and I don't care. I think at some point also screenplay author said that it would not make sense for Deckard to be a replicant.
@ussishkingang7194
@ussishkingang7194 6 лет назад
Isnt the whole point of the movie that androids are no less human ?
@88feji
@88feji 5 лет назад
+sithfrogpl But you're thinking from the point of view that humans are more emotional than replicants as an assumption ... which is precisely what the movie is trying to disprove .... duhh ... Pls rewatch the scene where Zhora dies, the emotional anguish during her death is meant to sow doubts in the viewers that replicants are cold beings ... see Rachel's despair and sadness when she finds out that her memories are not her own and she's not a human .... see Roy's emotional tribute to having seen and lived through great moments in life ... etc etc The movie shows replicants are cruel killers, yes, but it also shows them as very emotionally appreciative of life too ... Deckard being a replicant would be a lot more intriguing as an idea to show that even the protagonist that the audiencehas been rooting for turns out to be not human, it completely asks the audience to re-examine where their initial loyalty came from ... and holds a mirror up to the audience to question their own identities, "maybe I'm not who I thought I am" ... and ask questions like what makes me a human ... But if Deckard is a human, the movie becomes a lot more conventional in conforming to the cop and robber typical movie ... a lot less intriguing .. don't you think ?
@springbloom5940
@springbloom5940 5 лет назад
@@88feji No. The point is that Deckard is a bounty hunter who has to compartmentalize and dehumanize the quarry he progressively empathizes and identifies with. If hes a replicant too, that struggle is completely pointless drivel. Where is the struggle in falling for Rachel, if hes a replicant? What is the significance of Batty's saving Deckard, or his lament of mortality? None of this means anything at all, if Deckard is a replicant.
