Hello!
In this video I give a very simplified answer to one of the most commonly asked questions I get. What steel should I get? & Where to find it.
I am well aware that there are tons of great options out there. This is just a very simple guide for the beginner.
Enjoy!

Pops Knife Supply, Maritime Knife Supply, New Jersey Steel Baron, Alpha Knife Supply, Jantz Knife Supply, are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Industrial scrap yards or auto shops sometimes have large bearings or medium carbon steel shafts too. I've been working with 52100 from a 105 kg roller bearing assembly that came out of a massive industrial lathe.

ordered from Ground flat stock GFS in the UK a couple of times, nice people and it was fast but now with brexit it takes far longer so last time I switched to Eurotechni went smooth

Here in the US if you need knife or edge steel. Jantz Knife Supply, or Pops Knife Supply keep good stocks of high carbon steels. In Canada Maritime Knife Supply does the same. Maritime will also ship to the US. New Jersey Steel Baron does have the best selection of any tool or knife steel I know of. The first three I mentioned also stock quench oils

Love this type of teaching and Thanks, Your English is better than my is as I'm from the "Hillbilly " area of the USA . I just was advised 10 95 and I'm thinking close to your 1075 .My first time buying new steel and probably should have done it sooner but I was getting spring steel free. Great job teaching Sir Thanks

Thanks a lot! 1075 is in my opinion slightly easier to heat treat rather than 1095

Hi Nils. Just came across this video and wanted to add that McMaster-Carr is also a great place to get all different steels even in small quantity. I've bought from them, blacksmiths supply and Centaur Forge for other blacksmith things/goodies. Hope it helps~

Excellent review of suitable steels, and tips to decode the numbering system. Since I'm in Sweden, your hints where to buy from were helpful as well. Cheers.

Great video! Pops knife supply is a good site for some steel as well, and normally a bit cheaper. However if they are out of your steel you can be put on a notification list to be notified when they get it in stock.

all of these are great, steels, especially 1075 for sword/axe making, but if you want to make small(ish) knives, 1084 is the best imho. it's a simple high carbon steel that sits right at the eutectoid point and has the highest amount of carbon that you can have in a steel without having to be super careful about how you work with it. 1095 for example is beyond the eutectoid point, so it's quite a bit harder to work with, even though it only has a little bit more carbon. more about how heat treatment works here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6jQ4y0LK1kY.html&ab_channel=RealEngineering working with 1080/1084 steel here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TBIiWwawKSY.html&ab_channel=RedBeardOps

Hi Nils, thanks for the video mate it was very informative. As it happens I already have a LOT of 5160, in the form of car leaf springs, for when I get started which hopefully will be soon. The one thing that I am having a little bit of trouble with is finding a form of foundry cement in Australia that is equivalent to cast o lite 30 Li and ITC 100. I swear a light bulb came on in my head when you mentioned the word "equivalent"... I don't know, we have a new puppy, it's been a ruff week LOL 😳 😅 Thanks again Nils ⚒️👍👍

for absolute beginners s235jr (st37) is just about good enough for everything. even for simple knifes...(yes you can cold work or case harden it). for me, reforging old hammerheads into little hatchets is my focus know due to the lack of heavy machinery. high carbon steel tends to be too much for beginners in terms of forging and heat treating temperatures.

Har du prövat smida och värmebehandla 2541 till hårdare ändamål, typ eggverktyg? Det är ju ett seghärdat stål och bearbetningsbart från fabrik. Mvh
