@@icecold1805 what if civvie exist in a alternate dystopian world where everyone are prisoners? except for the elite of course. also in this alternate dystopian world the gov is owned by google so were obligated to make youtube content if we dont/refuse to make content or fail to please our algorithm robot overlord . . . . . well youve seen how they treat civvie if not go watch his other videos for context.
I love how Civvie occasionally changes Blake Stones name to things like "Dick Marble, Chad Feldspar, Nigel Basalt" it reminds me of the MST3K episode where they watch Space Mutiny and make up a dozen different macho names for the main character like "Smoke Manmuscle, Crud Bonemeal" etc. If this is some kind of reference to that then bravo Civvie, bravo :D
I wonder how many he came up with. Gordon Pebble Bertie Alabaster Derek Chalk St John Granite Benedict Obsidian Percy Pumice Quentin Quartzite Phillip Schist Danny Boulder Patrick Gneiss
I legit want a Blake Stone reboot. A shooter thats a call back to pulpy sci fi and spy thrillers would be honestly real awesome, there is some real potential there
The game was surprisingly fun, though I only played Planet Strike. Could not tolerate low res weapons and slightly worse lighting of the 1st game, even if it is apparently better. Music was good, atmosphere good, in general way more fun than Wolf3D.
@@nehemiahpouncey3607 It'd be a vacuous live service with Borderlands style randomized loot, a lifeless open world and terrible AI. Forgive me if I'm a little cynical about modern gaming. Although an indie boomer shooter reboot? That could be very interesting.
There is very much a reason to go to floors you've already cleared - to pick up the ammo and, more importantly, health packs you'd left behind because you didn't need them at the time!
Doubling back to previously-beaten levels is such a unique feature that I haven't seen it duplicated in any other game, despite how strategically useful it is.
I remember in the demo there was a jump scare with a big green alien in it that scared the shit out of me as a kid. And that's why I'll always remember Blake stone
@Conner The Dawn of War series was pretty fun from someone that doesn't even like RTS games. I mainly just enjoy the lore and bullshitting with my cousin about 40k events/ current events.
I liked Blake Stone at the time; our 386 really struggled with doom (it was just barely playable with terrible settings), but wolf3d clones were no problem.
People forget how bad the typical PC would have been in those days. A lot of people lag on PSX Doom for its choppy frame rate and slow game play, but it would have been a masterpiece compared to playing on a typical PC at the time, despite the PSX's cripplingly low RAM.
The first FPS I ever played with my dad. He would be on the controls while I would mash spacebar as he hugged the walls searching for secrets. Love this game!
The shareware of Blake Stone is burned into the deep recesses of my brain. I didn't expect such a strong nostagia hit on a Sunday morning. Thanks Civvie!
I'm surprised the level of restraint Civvie showed when he found the healing item literally called Raw Meat. The Gordan Ramsay clip for the R.apid A.ssault W.eapon absolutely had to happen though.
I did the Alan Grant “ohhh” from Event Horizon when I saw this post. Finally, Civie addresses the game that caused me so much pain, but brought me so much joy as a child.
One thing I discovered during my playthrough is that there are sometimes electrified areas that can only be turned off by a switch on a higher floor, so then once you find the switch you can go back to the lower floor and collect the rewards!
I remember this game. I only ever played a demo of it, but the title screen has always stuck in mind. Even as a kid, I recognized that it was a bizarre fusion of Flash Gordon and James Bond.
Game is available on steam full version i picked it up afew years ago found it to be rather enjoyable after having only played the shareware version as a kid and teen honestly its a great game
I've been WAITING for this. There's only one more obscure ish shooter I need you to cover now. Island of the dead and you will have covered all of my "too poor for the mainstream" playlist.
this is by far one of the most rewatchable civie episodes. I've watched this episode 7 times. The cadence, the information and jokes, and the way they're presented. Its good stuff
The "hidden arenas" informant is not a typo. If you keep wall humping in that area, there's a teleporter to the secret level zero, which is called Weapons Testing Arenas (or something to that effect) and it absolutely is "arenas" not "areas," they are locking monster closets.
It's not a typo the first time you read the line (when the secret level is Security Training Arenas). Looks like the devs recycled it whenever an Informant is in a room with a secret door.
I played the Shareware of this SO much when I was about 4 years old. It came on a CD with Corridor 7 and some other game I can't remember the name of. The gameplay and especially the music were so mind-blowing to me at the time! Thanks for covering this, one or my early favs!
The comic is actually part of the original manual. I had a copy back it the 90's. It was nice of Apogee to include it given manuals were part of the experience back then.
Dude Blake Stone! I remember this one. Holy shit those sounds take me back. As a kid, whenever a new wolfenstein type sprite based shooter came out, it was always like Xmas morning. The blood and gore, colorful sprites, choice of weapons, groovy but simple music, hilarious sound effects, and the overall tongue in cheek feel that most games of the time had, were really a solid formula for an enjoyable and heavily addictive gaming experience.
I've never seen this game before but I actually love it. There's something about the colors and the hud that is just so charming, not to mention those cutscenes, damn!
I remember playing Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold. So long ago. Not sure I played Planet Strike. Um, and I played Corridor Seven and the other one which won't be named. You've played it and have my condolences. Kudos.
I have been a fan since literally your first video, found you when you had like 1100 subs, and I've been asking for this game ever since. FINALLY. THANK YOU.
I remember watching my older brother play this back when it came out. Kind of forgot it even existed until I saw this video on my feed. Brings me back.
This vid knocked loose a ton of memories of this game. The title Blake Stone didn't stick with me but as soon as I saw that gameplay it all came back to me.
Blake Stone was the first game I ever played so it has a special place in my heart. It always makes me sad to see how overshadowed it was by DOOM. DOOM was certainly the better game but like you pointed out Blake Stone had a lot going for it and was an amazing game that deserved more recognition.
Seeing Admiral Adama and John Crichton's pictures in the bit at the beginning was pretty sweet. I wonder if anyone will ever make a Brutal Blake Stone mod, or what it would be like if someone just made some Blake Stone levels in Doom (with the verticality and all that) kind of like they did with that Wolfenstein game
Cool to finally see this one covered. I got mad nostalgia for this game and still had a good time playing it recently. Yeah, the hitscan mechanics are jank, and Planet Strike in particular can get a bit frustrating to navigate at times, but it was also kinda ahead of its time with its level design, and seeing stuff that would be commonplace in later shooters pulled off in such a primitive engine is still impressive.
I woke up feeling like crap. Immediately started watching this fraggin video, fell back asleep for 45 minutes, then i woke back up and rewound this video to the last thing I remembered before falling asleep
Kind of curious, wasn't it Civvie that coined the term 'Boomer Shooter'? If so it's kinda funny that the Boltgun trailer refers to itself as a 'Boomer Shooter', like Civvie has successfully invented a genre name.
Civvie 11: "I admire your courage ms?" Katie: "Sixteen. Ms. Sixteen. I admire your sarcasm mr?" Civvie 11: "Eleven, Civvie Eleven" 3:28 - Sean Connery personation part 1 15:19 - Sean Connery personation part 2
Blake Stone is seriously underrated and probably the best game to use the Wolf3D engine in its original pre-ROT form (what do we call that these days btw? IDtech0? IDtech1?). All those added touches do so much to make it feel immersive, and unlike a lot of Apogee titles it keeps throwing new things at you all the way through the 66 levels rather than giving us the best bits all in the Shareware episode. Things like Blake really underline how badly Capstone buggered up their use of the Wolfenstein engine because frankly there's plenty that can be done with it.
Back in 93 my 386 was too shitty to run Doom. But you know what it could run...? Hell, yeah Blake Stone! Which cemented a love-hate relationship with the game as I remember having a lot of fun with it, but at the same time it was the game I was stuck with while everyone else was screaming how Doom was the best game of all time.
If I’m not mistaken, the silent pistol does extra damage to unaware enemies, meaning you can sneak up and oneshot a few basic guards without alerting enemies. Basic protostealth mechanics as well! Too bad there are precious few occasions to do this
Thanks for the video Civvie! I grew up with the shareware version of Aliens of Gold (The music has always stuck with me and finding out it was by Bobby Prince I now know why) and since finding your channel I was curious what your take on it would be. I never did see (or play) Planet Strike and didn't know that was a thing till I saw the bundle for sale on Steam years later so it was a treat to learn about it and hear your thoughts on that game too. I don't blame you for refusing to make Planet Strike it's own video as from the looks of it there wasn't much else to say. Thanks again!
Blake Stone sounds like the name of a Flintstones character. Also, did anyone else notice that Chasm: The Rift has made something of a comeback ever since Civvie's video? First, it popped up on GOG and Steam last year then it was announced that it was going to be ported to every system including the Switch. So now everyone can enjoy this weirdly loved old school piece of slav-jank.
Ah... my favorite Wolf3d engine game. And definitely in my top 3 "Boomer Shooters" (along with Blood and Heretic) I had no idea Planet Strike existed until recently and it's the first time in 10 years I'd felt excitement 😅 Srsly, just watching this review fills me with joy ❤🎉 Edit: I have the OST in mp3 format and listen to it regularly 😁
Hey, Civvie! I just wanted to say that all of the stuff you make is genuinely some of the most enjoyable content online I've found, and that if you ever start feeling burnt out from making these so quickly, then don't worry about us if you wanna take a break! Sometimes I get the feeling that your fans really get on your nerves about making videos on things ASAP, but I don't want you to end up hating everything you do, so if you can, make sure to take it easy from time to time!
Finally, after years of waiting, the question is answered. I now know what a Blake Stone is, and my life is better because of it. Thank you Civvie, take this offering of engagement as a token of my gratitude.
I always wondered if we'd get a good Blake Stone video from Civvie. Another old favorite from my dos era childhood. Shame it was killed off by Doom. It really had potential.
This is INSANITY. My stepdad called this “kids doom” when I was a kid, and let us play it (and we watched him play real doom). I remembered all the sprites and artwork but decades later I went to search “kids doom” and only things like Chex Quest showed up. I’ve tried at least 6 times over the years to go down rabbitholes that could ring a bell and show me my memory was right and this wasn’t imaginary. You just unintentionally unlocked a whole treasure trove of childhood memories I thought I might never find. And no wonder, the title of this game is something I never ever ever could guess
Yay, you finally did Blake Stone! One of the main FPS games of my childhood. Wolf 3D (shareware), Blake Stone (shareware), Doom, Heretic, and Duke3D were my favorites, and I've been wondering when Blake Stone would make an appearance on your channel. Thanks for playing Blake Stone! I was 5 or 6 when I first played Blake Stone, and I'll tell you, the rooms with the infinite spawning plasma monsters terrified me. I would just run to the other door, my heart pounding the entire way through. 🤣
