Icy trails and snow on the ground? Sounds like the perfect time for Blake to ride Clips! Blake has genuinely never ridden clipless pedals before, or clip pedals (aka cages) either! Lucky for him that Doddy has both sets with him! This should be fun!

Doddy is on hand to help Blake with all aspects of learning to ride clipped in from shoes and set up to climbing and track stands. There's tonnes of super useful information in here for those of you that might be thinking about trying clips for the first time in the new year!

So, too bad he didn't have him using road pedals where your shoes had a cleat with a slot to hold the pedal and it was impossible to pull out of toe clips. That's why track racers still strap their feet in.

This is a great video gents. A great reminder of how t used to be switching from flats to clips. You definitely made some great points on the differences between riding both (pros and cons). There are times when flats are preferred but being clipped in allows you to focus more on the trails rather than technique. That comes in very handy on long rides. Keep it up!!!

This is an amazing video! I came from road biking, so I have always ridden clips on mountain bikes. I think this has held me back in skills development in certain areas. For example, trying to learn to manual has been tough because I can't quickly step off when on clips versus flats. I think I need to ride flats to learn certain skills, I will come back to clips too - they are great for trail riding once I have learned skills. Thanks Doddy and Blake!

I really like the fact that you made Blake ride clipped-in in snow and mud, to show that slippery and tough conditions are just as safe to drive clipped. The only real challenge with cleats is that, snow tends to stick to them and you need to kick it off to clip in.

Great vid. I remember the transition from flat pedals to toeclips and all the carnage that ensued. Then I got clever and found Power Grips which were like a poor man's version of clipless pedals but still terrible! Then clipless... doing primarily XC races (in the era of '90s Ned Overend and John Tomac), it was like discovering heaven!

Good for you, and yes indeed that burn is immense ! :D

@AndrewGrease 6 лет назад
That burn is because you start training different muscle/ligament groups. Clips actually make you use more power for any given task. Start here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FkHkZbyzPkM.html and into the rabbit hole :) End of the line is you ride better on the thing you train longer. You can go ride clips, but do you really hate your ankles and knees that much? :)

Blake is a skilled rider, those clappy pedals are made for looser and he definitely isn't one.

Blake, these guys don't want you to move to clipless because YOU'RE JUST GOING TO BE FASTER & A BETTER RIDER than you already are...new level of sickness, dude!!! Once it becomes second nature to pop-out when you want to (it'll take a few more falls here & there, hopefully you'll have some more small pine trees to cushion the fall like in the end of the vid), you won't feel as safe or ride with as much confidence when you ride flats again. ONLY except is trials riding, which isn't really riding so much as a lot of bike tricks where you do some pedaling between tricks - fall/bail factor is way higher & I would fully agree flats are better there. Everything else, clipless all the way, mate!

it was never mentioned but one good thing about getting clipped is when you get into a rock section and fatigue starts to kick into your calf and thighs and getting clipped helps you keep your foot where the pedals are and you can just let it go of the brakes and rippp!

I started riding clipless earlier this year and can attest to the power and control that you gain, definitely less winded at the end of a ride, but after a freak accident where a failure to un-clip caused a bimalleolar fracture, I am probably back to flats for life. I won't say never, but it may be a while.

I totally agree. That's why I don't ride clips on my MTB. I clip in on road, commute and CX racing, but not MTB.....

Funny seeing Blake toppling sideways in the background. Been there, still do that once in a blue moon. Welcome to the Clippy Club 😁
