In 1953, Blancpain introduced the world's first true diving watch, the Fifty Fathoms. Its name referred to a British depth measurement, which equals 91 meters or 300 feet: at the time the deepest depth that any watch could reach.
Later that year, Rolex introduced the Submariner, but only the Blancpain could be used for diving with compressed air, because it had a unidirectional bezel.
