Blas is a great drummer..such a nice guy too.. Even when he was on top of the world with Slaughter, one of my friends had a meet and great with the band. I talked drums with him, and he walked me down to the stage to check out his new set when they were opening for the Damn Yankees.
I saw that tour/show as well. Blas was always the best part of Slaughter. Course I'm a drummer too so a little bias maybe. Nah. My theory (which isn't much of a theory really) is: Behind every great band is an even greater drummer. (not that I am suggesting Slaughter was a "great" band. More like "okay". lol Never got into the Hair Metal thing too much.) May I suggest some ear candy? Robot God, 3 piece from down under, Australia. I haven't been this excited about a band since I came across Clutch in the early 2000's (which is still my favorite Rock Band, Jean Paul one of my Fav drummers). Their latest album: "Robot God - Portal Within" is pretty impressive. Check out the 1st Track "Long Way Road". A 13 minute introduction to the band that goes 7 minutes before any singing. Personally, I think a double bill of Robot God and Clutch would make for an awesome evening! Robot God express the Magic of Music where the sum is greater than the parts. And the best bass tone you've ever heard. Even their first EP's sound better than most established bands. If you haven't heard of them, definitely worth checking out if you want to go for a ride without leaving the house. Now go Crank That Shit Up!
totally underrated! very gifted and surprisingly technical musician! i was always a huge fan of his and slaughter…cut my teeth playing fly to the angels. i always liked his heavy driving groove. esp up all night. loved seeing him in rockstar. i never had the privilege of meeting blas, but heard he was a good guy. glad i caught this. would’ve loved to have had it in 89! ✌🏻
I remember watching these on VHS when they were new. I do remember that they were expensive back then and if you owned one or two of these tapes you were considered lucky in those days. Funny how it's all free on demand these days. I've never seen this one though. I think Blas is an awesome drummer and showman. Used to jam the Slaughter in the car at high volumes back in the day. Good times good times. Looking back, there was some truly talented musicians in a lot of those bands back then.
I lived in Brasil my whole life and back in the day when Up all Night was release I got lucky to get a copy from a copy from someone who recorded MTV during a trip to the USA on VHS for a couple hours and brought to Brasil. So I got this tape and re-watched until the tape wore out.
Has played in Blue Man Group for years so you know he’s got chops. His drumming with Slaughter always had such great backbone. Was no doubt popular with the ladies too 😉
44:33 44:38 I was injured and have to re teach myself rudiments and groove. I am so happy to hear that Blas was a drum corp player. I have relearned so much in 1 hour as compared to 1 month myself. Stick control book has stood the test of time.
Wasn't very familiar with this guy's work (although I know slaughter), but watched his gear explanation, technique explanation, and warmups, and instantly knew he was a real deal player. This video would have been a great starting point for young drummers back in the day if they rolled the dice and got this among the sea of other videos. Really valuable fundamental stuff here.
Very underrated, or overlooked. Never even heard his name. Very good drumming machine and a nice dude. Awfully young in this video. I'm a late coming fan. Hope he's still out there doing his thing! Rock on brother
Blas has toured with Trans-Siberian Orchestra since 2017. He played in the Las Vegas production of Blue Man Group. He also was in the movie Rock Star as the drummer for Steel Dragon.
Absolutely NO ONE from the 90's is underrated, you're just a fawn with spots li,e you said. Late. Late late. These guys were hot for about an afternoon. Then nirvana came out, and you never saw them again.
@@deebop4904true. One of those bands you never think about until the radio randomly plays one of their songs.....a few nostalgic memories and the last thing that would come to mind is their drummer
He plays in a 💩 band that got on the glam metal train, where there were already 200 similar bands, why is he underrated? or why does it have to be praised and recognized? What did he innovate musically and his instrument? Is he better than a New Orleans jazz bar drummer?
Underated because he's another 80's 4/4 drummer who flicks his hair around while twirling his sticks between fills like none other. Something to definitely inspire influence
Blas Elias... someone who I really didn't know a lot about until very recently. I'm going to be seeing him with TSO later this week, and wanted to edify myself on hiZ drumming and career. I just read hiZ Modern Drummer cover issue from the 90'Z. HeZ actually very talented 👍👍👍🥁🥁🥁
He was in the movie Rockstar as the drummer for Mark Wahlberg cover band for steel dragon. There were a few genuine rock stars in that movie. Jeff pilson bassit from dokken was the bass player in that band
WOW !!!! AMAZING PLAYING. YOUR STICK TECHNIQUE IS OUT OF THiS WORLD !!!! WHICH PLANET ARE YOU FROM. ONE OF THE GREATEST I'VE EVER SEEN. EXTREMELY PRECISE PLAYING!!!! EXCELLENT ADVICE ON HOW TO BUILD UP SPEED !!!! YOUR VISUAL 'S ARE AMAZING!!!! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!! AWESOME!!!!
It got to the point back then ,, you went to the record company ,, long hair, ✅,, double bass drum kit in a cage, ✅,, sexy 80s lookin singer , ✅ ,, Finger tap the guitar, ✅,,, YOUR SIGNED!!.. lol
I give the dude major props. I always liked his drumming, he knows what he he is doing. Although I think we are all a tad bit jealous of the entire thing he has been apart of, his smooth snare exercises and chops may be the top of the list.
28:12 isnt what hes demostrating a six stroll roll? Because thats how I do my 6 stroke rolls on the toms and snare and thats how I was taught to perceive what hes doing there.. can even call it a par-a-diddle-diddle.. thats how I would say it in my head when I play that groove on the toms and snare. R-L RR LL (par-a diddle diddle). Blas Elias is full of knowledge and I always learn something new from watching these old drum vhs tapes. Had no idea he comes from an education background. I personally am self taught. Pat Torpey is another drummer whos vhs tapes I still watch and learn something from till this day.
He made slaughters music come with his feel and groove!!! Love the hair !! It’s a huge shame that he is no longer part of the band!! Now they have a drummer who doesn’t have the same feel as blas recordings and he likes to show off which to me is such a ego maniac
Ya know - l always thought this kid was weak - upon watching this video - he REALLY HAS SOMETHING GOING ON - Kudos to him (Scarborough HS - Houston, TX) …. Good job
quite correct description of levels re accented and unaccented technique. but my dude here hasn't worked super seriously on that kind of accuracy. his grooves are close enough for rock and roll--not perfect of course. but he's more entertainer than musician. slaughter? yeah, no copy-cat or stereotypical 80s glamor rock there at all... except for the occasional dotted-8th-16th note kick👍
He Rocks buuuut he's a busy drummer too much flash imo i appreciate his dedication to expression but it's hampering that pocket groove. You'd never catch Adler or Tommy lee that busy. He is good tho obviously, chops for days I'm just more of a pocket drummer with brief moments of flash strategically placed in a song
