Very informative . Looked into bleaching/ dying pheasant feathers as I have a mate who shoots them so I have a supply of them but financially its not beneficial for me to do it as I only tie flies for myself so with cost of materials to dye a couple of feathers in most popular colours its cheaper for me just to buy the feathers already dyed . Certainly worth watching your video as when my tying improves it may be an avenue I may venture down in selling a few

Thank you for watching. In your tying journey you may at one point want a feather dyed the colour your looking and you can purchase 👍🏻👍🏻

If you are bleaching or dying after rinsing I slather hair conditioner over the materials and put them in a plastic bag for a day. Remove and rinse again, it will help keep materials supple.

Have you had any luck bleaching squirrel tails? I used to get them from Lathkill back in the day but apparently it's too hit and miss to get them right as the hair gets damaged very easily by the bleaching process. But a squirrel tail bleached and dyed golden olive makes a wonder Wulff for the Mayfly.

Yes three parts bleach and two parts water. I would suggest using thin bleach 👍🏻. Best Regards, Scott

Scott one wee question if you don't mind. So did you dye your peacock quills olive first then strip off the heel by dying ? As it looks like you bleach the pheasant tail first then dye it after bleaching. Great educational video by the way. Thanks for sharing

Yeah I dye first with the peacock quill. The cock pheasant tails can take a bit of punishment but not much 👍🏻👍🏻

I’m on a “Bleach Feathers” mission.. I’ve been warned against using actual bleach because it makes the feathers brittle.. Have you noticed that at all..? I bought a bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide for hair bleaching which seems to involve much faffing about. your method seems much easier..🤔

Hi, I’ve use bleach for a long time so long as you neutralise the bleach process it’s grand. Hope this helps 👍🏻👍🏻
